If Papa is wearing all those layers indoors, the Apostolic Palace must be freezing. Is it heated? When they renovated the papal apartments, I hope they installed a decent furnace. Poor Papa. Let's chip in and send him some long underwear with all our names embroidered on it.

Ratzigirl finally posted the picture I have been waiting for all day - and it is self-explanatory. Perhaps Simone or Sylvie will crop off the right side appropriately for a prayer card. And Papa so radiantly beautiful.....

THE BIRDS

Apparently, when the two kids and Papa released the two doves this morning, one flew off a little way but the other circled back above Papa's head and into his study. (If you listen to the end of today's angelus on the Vatican Radio website, you can hear the commotion and Papa laughing and saying that the dove wants to stay with the pope.) The kids can be seen in some of the Yahoo photos ducking and holding their hands over their heads as the bird flew back over them into the room. It finally was persuaded to fly out again but both birds landed on the ledge below Papa's window and just hung out there.

How does that song, "Close to You", by the Carpenters go? The part about the birds...

LOVE BIRDS

Leticia, what we need to do is all of us go to a papal audience together and you know how different priests will read out the names of various groups in attendance and those groups stand up and scream and wave? Some of them stand and sing a folk song or a serious choral piece and Papa always seems delighted. Well, our group could stand up and sing "Close to You" or at least the key lines. Do you think we could get his attention that way?

I think he might prefer the Carpenters to the Four Tops - Maryjos used to say that some of the words of 'Reach Out, I'll be There' were applicable - there are a number of old tunes which no doubt are our secret favourites.

Was just going to bed, when I decided to hit this great thread and WOW OH WOW!!!!! Those pics that have been added since I've had my computer back................! WHOOSH! Thanks a million. The one taken just before Papa was made an archbishop in 1977 is absolutely SMUACK, to say nothing of all the others....the one with eyes cast down,[How did you all know - that's how I love him best?!!!] the one where he's looking to the right [recent pics from Mass]...........I haven't saved them all yet.
Clare told me about the song idea, Benefan and everyone. Oh to go to an audience together and start singing!
I thought I may remember a poem about doves, but all I can think of is "The White Birds" by W.B. Yeats - it's beautiful. I can't quote it from memory.

SONGS FOR PAPA

Jil, your song sounds beautiful. Wulfrune, definitely not the Four Tops. Maryjos, glad you are back with us and like the song idea; however, I really think we missed a golden opportunity. At the audience just before the encyclical came out, Papa mentioned it and commented on what he was trying to accomplish with it. If we had only been there, as soon as he said, "Deus Caritas Est", we could all have stood up as a group and sung Dionne Warwick's version of "What the World Needs Now is Love, Sweet Love," complete with hand gestures: "Not just for some but for everyone."

The way to get to see Papa is to have a gimmick (my American upbringing is kicking in here). We could form a pop papal singing group, the Popettes. Mag6nedium, who is a retired choir director, could coach us. Those of us with no voice (me) could lip synch. I think this is our ticket to Papa, girls. What do you think?

I'm afraid I would have to be among the lip-synchers as well. Hopefully we would have some singers amongst us, otherwise we could just use sign language which would, of course, make it a lot harder for us to attract Papa's attention.

Or maybe someone can come up with something as daring as the chant? song? reported by Sihaya from the January 11 audience, when some Italians (or Hispanics) sang something that went like - "Oh mamma, mamma, mamma/ Do you know why my heart beats so?/ I've seen Benedict, I've seen Benedict/ Oh mamma, I'm in love!" Remember, even nuns have been heard to shout out "Benedict, you are beautiful! We love you!"

I'm still wondering - when will someone in the media catch on to this phenomenon of a 79-year-old Papa 'Rubacuori' and report on it????? - on top, that is, of all the other phenomena he has already manifested!

OH, MAMA, MAMA

I kind of like those lyrics, Teresa. I hope Papa could understand them. Maybe we could turn them into some sort of Gregorian chant. Or, failing that, rap. That would get some attention, especially since most of us are probably middle-aged and not black. Willow, I do think sign language just wouldn't work, unless we wore some sort of really eye-catching costumes.

Teresa, think how long it has taken the media to "sort of" realize what kind of good person Papa is. It will take at least that long for them to figure out he is a "chick magnet" if, in fact, they ever do figure it out. I mean all they have to do is watch people at one of his audiences. Even nuns. They are practically clawing over the top of people to grab at him.
