ROCCO PALMA'S COMMENTS
@benefan

Rocco has an item in his blog today about Papa's outfit at the audience yesterday and also the supposed ongoing battle between Georg and Clemmons. He also repeats that Papa's ermine cape was a gift from the 2 princesses. Much of his information is from a recent article in the Italian publication, Panorama.

It would be better for me not to read in Rocco Palma's blog. It's not his fault, he's a good writer, it's my fault. About "the gift's" I wrote my thoughts in the audience-thread, and Teresa wants to comfort me. Carelessly enough I searched for the words "Gloria" and "Ingrid" and so on and I found for instance, that GLORIA HAD BEEN FOR DINNER IN THE PAPAL APPARTEMENT. Oh, my god, this is more I can bear.
And Rocco writes a lot about Ingrid, but that doesn't hurt me so much, because I like her better than Gloria. Oddly enough, even though she is a part of Papa's daily life, I think, while Gloria is only a friend..... ?

Simone,

Sorry I brought up Rocco's comments. I think we need to keep in mind that most of what is written about Papa and who he sees is guesswork on the part of the writers or is just plain gossip. In reality, hardly anyone knows what Papa is doing or who he is seeing and those who do know are not going to talk about it. I think all of us have, at times, wished we were in Gloria's shoes or Ingrid's so we could have free access to Papa. However, I think even with them he is going to withhold a lot of himself and will be very careful in his speech and behavior, especially now that he is pope. He has too much respect for God and for the church to do otherwise. Alas, all of us can only admire him from a distance, including those who may be sitting right at the dinner table with him.

Gloria and Ingrid
But Simone, I am now confused. How can Rocco P. claim that Papa sees and have lunch or whatever with (inter alia) Ingrid if she is living in an apartment or something in " a little street" (I read that somewhere) in the Vatican area? She is not working directly for Papa anymore, is she? She isn't the "Householder" anymore? Of course we're all a bit jealous, but do we really know what is fact and what fiction?

GOSSIP ABOUT PAPA
Oh, dear - let's take a deep breath and distinguish between
fact and gossip. The Panorama article
read like a gossip column and was mostly dreck, so I did not even bother to translate it
after the Italian girls posted it upstairs, and similarly, I ignored the highly unlikely story
about the supposed Clemens-Gaenswein hostilities...But I did post part of a Panorama "evaluation"
of Papa (in News about Benedict) which quotes Messori and one other veteran journalist,
who have good things to say about Papa....

I must admit I exercise some "selection" over the things I post, my primary criterion being,
given that Papa is a holy man, what is the likelihood that he would do things
that are attributed to him? For instance, would he really tolerate a nasty "turf war"
(of the kind that the gossips are purveying) between Giorgio and Clemens?...

Sometimes, however, gossip is elevated to the status of "news" by the simple fact
that it is repeated in outlets that are usually for legitimate news rather than gossip -
such as the stories that keep turning up about "what really happened at the Conclave"...

Last night, I do not know why, but I decided to watch KTO's one-hour archive video
of the ceremony that preceded the actual Conclave, and a chill ran through me as I watched
117 Cardinals, led by Ratzi, each walking up to an open Bible in the Sistine Chapel,
laying their right hand on it, and then pronouncing the solemn words of the oath of secrecy
that is supposed to be binding on them. A commentator reviewed all the things that
the person who takes the oath is not supposed to do. All this under the mighty image
of the Risen Christ in Michelangelo's Last Judgment....

And then I thought back to the Italian cardinal who reportedly kept a Conclave diary
whose contents he allowed to be publicized, and just before Christmas, a Brazilian cardinal
who was reported to claim, in effect, that Ratzi and his supporters openly campaigned
for the Papacy (one of the things absolutely prohibited by John Paul's rules for the Conclave)
among the Cardinals...There's supposed to be "honor among thieves" but there doesn't seem
to be among these cardinals who are reported to be violators of the oath they swore to!
And this is the sort of gossip or calculated rumor that graduates to being "news"!

As for the two princesses, I think their "intimacy" and "influence" with Papa
are grossly exaggerated by the gossips. Does anyone here seriously believe
that if one or both of them suddenly sent Papa an ermine-trimmed cape and an ermine-trimmed hat,
that Papa would then feel compelled to wear these things just because they sent it to him?
Is he Pope or puppet?

Granted, he is such a darling poppet, as the British might say, and I quite like the term
Paparatzifan used last night for him (She said, "I still don't like the camauro, but dear Papa,
it fills me with infinite tenderness to see you in it, my beloved puppazzetto Natale." -
Puppazzetto being one of those many neologisms one can build out of root Italian words -
in this case, both pupa and pupazzo being variants of terms for dolls, snowmen and yes, puppets!).
But these are endearments, of course, not literal fact...

One other thing - People are making up all sorts of things about Papa and the few
who are close to him, because the Papal Apartments have finally stopped being Open House
(to opportunistic types who may have taken advantage of JP-II's
poor health for their own ends); and because B16's household appears to be discreet!

Benefan, thank you for the link. It's the first time I rode in Rocco Palmos blog. He is writing really strange things. Who is he ? A journalist ? No, I never believed that Papa's camauro was a present from Gloria. Maybe she is a friend of our Papa, which is okay, but I don't think her influence on Papa is as big that he wears everything she donates to him.
Aww, what's going on with Papa's secretaries ? I always read about it, they don't like each other, don't they ? That's sad. They are both so nice and doing a brilliant work for Papa.
Be good company, Monsignori !!!!! I don't think Papa likes to see you struggling each other !!! [SM=g27811] [SM=g27811] [SM=g27811]

Well said Teresa, unfortunately for some journalists the line between fiction and reality has been blurred or for them is not their at all.

Dinabella: I find it hard to believe that as Rocco says: Josef Clemens, now a bishop and secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, and Georg Ganswein had a now-legendary public brawl had in the Piazza della Citta' Leonina... [SM=g27820]: If they were really having a spat I think they would hash it out in private remember that they are in the public eye and that Georg is the Pope's secretary. Like Teresa says Papa wouldn't tolerate it. Besides Rocco doesn't give a reason to why they are "fighting" and I can't imagine why they would...

Happy New Year
Dear sisters, I promise, I'll think about the difference between facts and gossip. But, nevertheless, I'm not really convinced, that it's all gossip.

In Germany we have a saying "Wo Rauch ist, ist auch Feuer". That means, is there smoke, there must be a fire.

Please be absolutely sure, that I not mean our beloved Papa. He is definitely faultless, blameless, flawless (I hope, these are the right words for what I want to express). My confidence to him is more than 100 % and also to the members of his household.
You can easily see, it's just Gloria, she makes me nervous.
And admiration by sitting at Papa's dinnertable gives much more fun than admiration from a distance.

Only and forever admiration from the distance, not even to be able to write him a letter he will read, that's my problem.

Sorry, sisters, that I'm so restless and childish. I'll try to forget all that for the next few days.
I'm so glad to be here with you and I wish you a Happy New Year !
I'll be back in 2006 !

SO GOOD AT LOOKING PAPAL!
Here is something (picture included) filed December 15 by Drew, one of the 5 Notre Dame University
students who conduct the "Shrine of the Holy Whapping" blog -
holywhapping.blogspot.com/

Random Outburst of Fraternal Papal Devotion

Beleaguered by the foes of earth,
Beset by hosts of hell,
He guards the loyal flock of Christ,
A watchful sentinel:
And yet, amid the din and strife,
The clash of mace and sword,
He bears alone the Shepherd Staff,
The champion of the Lord!

I have a theory that hard-core splinter groups (whether Latin Mass schismatics or
loopy Protestant extremists) tend towards conspiracy theories and general fear of the world
because they have no one fighting the good fight for them in the larger world.
That doesn't excuse us from bringing Christ to our own milieu, but it is comforting.

Especially when that someone has gotten so good at looking Papal!
--------------------------------------------------------------

NB: The verse he quotes is the second stanza of the hymn "Long Live the Pope"
which, by the way, I learned as a child attending a Catholic school in the 50s.

At the same "Shrine of the Holy Whapping" holywhapping.blogspot.com/ there is a good piece called "Why the Camauro is Awesome" which gives the question of papa's clothes additional, philosphical meaning.

And as for jealousy of Simone I am afraid that I share those feelings. [SM=g27819] I may just quote Shakespeare (with a little change) as a warning
"O, beware, my LADY, of jealousy;
It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock
The meat it feeds on; "

THIS AND THAT
First, mag6nideum has allowed me to share with you an e-mail that she sent last month to the CDF about Pap's ahir and the Vatican barbers. It is hilarious, and I hope it made whoever receive it laugh hard enough to bring it to the attention of someone like Giorgio!

Subject: The Pope's barber

Dear Sir(s),

I am not a Catholic, but I'm writing to you in desperation (representing at least 345 other people who also feel deeply for the Holy Father). [ THEY'LL PROBABLY THINK THE 345 PEOPLE BELONG TO A TINY PROTESTANT SECT. HEH, HEH, HEH...]

We all feel that the Vatican barber (il barbiere?) cuts the beautiful hair of Pope Benedictus XVI TOO SHORT.

As soon as the pope's hair looks beautiful and has the correct length, as befits his position and as Vicar of Christ, some barber with crazy scissors shears his hair as though the Pope is a sheep.

This seems almost iconoclastic, because Benedictus XVI is also a symbol, even in the bodily sense. And he is beautiful to look at. That is why I (we) are writing to this Congregation!

Can you do something about the barber(s)??? Please??!

Thank you for taking this e-mail seriously.

Pax.

Protestant admirer of Benedictus XVI and the Roman Catholic Church
