1. Cavs Get Physical With Defending Champs

CLEVELAND -- When Kobe Bryant stomped to the locker room following the Lakers' loss to the Cavs Thursday night, he seemed to be nail-spitting mad. Primarily because his teammates weren't exactly spitting nails.

There's quite a few things that the Cavs aren't, especially when it comes to what they do out there when they have the basketball. For much of the LeBron James' era, their offense hasn't been aesthetically pleasing. Sometimes it is hard to tell how exactly they win, save for a few remarkable James' highlights every night.

But one thing they are is physical and they have showed it night in and night out this season. It is because of James, who is assembling another Most Valuable Player-type resume as the season marches onward, and that relentless nature they are 33-11 including two victories over the Lakers after Thursday's 93-87 win.

They put that physical style on display about every night, whether they are playing a world-class team or not.

Cavs coach Mike Brown calls it making the opponent "feel you." It means shoving through screens, grinding hips, shoulders and elbows into opponents on nearly every rebound and making sure there is contact as often as possible when someone goes to the rim on them.

"We just play physical," Shaquille O'Neal said. "Very, very physical."

All of it was in display in their win over the Lakers, who had trouble with the tactics in the loss to Cleveland back on Christmas Day and struggled again matching the Cavs style in the second meeting. They aren't alone, the Cavs have been doing this to teams for months now.

The Cavs have been outrebounded only once in the last 29 games and not at all in the last 18. Against the Lakers, they were down 16-7 on the boards in the first quarter and ended up with a 48-43 edge.

The Cavs lead the NBA in fewest points allowed in the paint at 34.5 a game, a result of having O'Neal and other good interior defenders like Zydrunas Ilgauskas, Anderson Varejao and even James. The Lakers scored 14 points in the paint in the first quarter and then had just 12 more in there for the rest of the game.

They are third in the league in defensive field goal percentage, an offshoot from how they force teams to attempt so many jumpers. Even those they often work to contest by using sometimes complex help-and-recover schemes. Only three times this season have the Cavs allowed an opponent to shoot better than 50 percent and nine times they've held the other team under 40 percent. Thursday they did it to the Lakers for the second time, they shot 38 percent in both losses to the Cavs.

They imposed their will on Bryant, too. They used four different defenders on him throughout the course of the game. Then, in the fourth quarter out of nowhere, they started to double team with a big man. He went 11-of-33 shooting in the first meeting. This time around he went 12-of-31, just 4-of-15 in the second half.

The way it all went down left Bryant steaming. Especially because he felt he'd warned his teammates before the game to expect the Cavs to be physical. Despite all of their size, the Lakers once again weren't ready for it and they know they'll get more of it on the seven games left on this Eastern trip.

"That's East Coast basketball and we've been playing a lot of West Coast teams," Bryant said. "Outside of Denver, the Western Conference is not very physical. It's good for us on this trip to face teams like Cleveland and Boston and teams that play smash-mouth basketball."

That style has done wonders against the West over the last two seasons. This season the Cavs are now 15-5 against the Western Conference after going 26-4 against it last season.

It has given the Cavs not just the best record in the East but some confidence after beating the NBA champs in both meetings during the regular season.

Guarda è quello che mis to chiedendo pure io... tant'è che perdo interesse a discutere con una persona il cui unico obbiettivo sembra rompermi le palle mettendo sempre in luce gli aspetti negativi del capitano della squadra per cui tifo sin da piccolo e che non rappresente (come si ostina a pensare) che sia una mia divinità del basket.

Ovvio... I Lakers probabilmente sono la squadra meno adatta alle partite muscolari (è stato sempre storicamente un limite) o per lo meno hanno bisogno di sentire dannatamente la partita.

E comunque meglio, molto meglio rispetto a Natale: almeno ieri ce la si è giocata fino alla fine con errori grossolani (in parte merito anche dei Cavs) e si poteva vincere anche tutto tirando con un orrido 38.6% da 2, 34.8% da 3 e 62.5% ai liberi (due sanguinosissimi sbagliati da Pau nel finale).

Aspetto positivo: ho visto a tratti una difesa che non sempre si mette in campo...

però è strano che i lakers patiscano il basket fisico.
E' vero che a ovest lo si pratica poco, però hanno 3 settepiedi, artest e kobe che muscoli ne hanno da regalare, l'unico che puoi mettere sotto relativamente facilmente è fisher, che però sopperisce con l'esperienza

Ennesimo attestato di stima della Grande Mela per Danilo Gallinari. Dopo essere entrato nel cuore dei tifosi dei Knicks, e aver dimostrato di essere non solo il giocatore più affidabile del presente ma soprattutto quello del futuro della franchigia, adesso l’azzurro viene inserito nella famosa classifica stilata dal New York Post chiamata “New York’s most elegible bachelors”. In pratica si parla degli scapoli più affascinanti della metropoli e il Gallo si e’ guadagnato la 12° posizione. Il tabloid newyorchese tesse le lodi dell’azzurro in questo modo: “Quei profondi occhi color nocciola, quelle braccia, il suo ricco contratto e quella parlata con l’inconfondibile accento italiano. Inoltre è un cuoco fantastico ed è orgoglioso di esserlo”. Il Post non dimentica nemmeno il ristorante preferito dell’azzurro, l’ormai leggendario (per il Gallo e per i suoi tifosi) “Via della Pace” dell’East Village.

STEREOTIPI — A prescindere da alcuni commenti un po’ stereotipanti (l’accento e la cucina fanno sempre e comunque parte della descrizione di qualsiasi italiano di successo negli States), la “stima” da un punto di vista glamour del New York Post deve comunque far inorgoglire l’azzurro che sta diventando sempre di più l’idolo della Grande Mela. La classifica si apre premettendo che quest'anno manca Derek Jeter, interbase e capitano degli Yankees campioni del Mondo, recentemente fidanzatosi con Minka Kelly, E poi parte con ai primi due posti Eugene Remm e Mark Birnbaum, cofondatori della società di produzione EMM Group che lo scorso anno ha dichiarato l’invidiabile profitto di 30 milioni di dollari. La terza posizione, invece, è appannaggio di Mark Sanchez, il quarterback dei New York Jets che sembra destinato a contendere proprio a Gallinari, negli anni a venire, il titolo di sportivo più amato della Grande Mela. Sanchez nel suo anno da rookie ha fatto cose eccellenti, portando i Jets a un passo dal Super Bowl. La squadra newyorchese, infatti, proprio domenica e’ stata sconfitta dai Colts nella finale della Afc.

GALLO PIACE AI MAD MEN — L’inserimento nella classifica del New York Post di Danilo Gallinari testimonia le grandi potenzialità dell’azzurro non solo sul parquet ma anche a Madison Avenue, la culla dei pubblicitari a stelle e strisce. Il Gallo, infatti, sembra avere davanti a sè un futuro davvero roseo come protagonista di campagne pubblicitarie negli States, per via della sua presenza ma anche per il suo carattere. New York gli strizza l’occhio, anche se spera di poter vedere, già dalla prossima stagione, in maglia Knicks un altro personaggio (in questo momento il numero uno negli States) fatto apposta per Madison Avenue: LeBron James.
