Preview For Tuesday Night SmackDown LIVE: Alpha vs. Usos
Is AJ Styles fired or heading to WrestleMania?
Preview The Headliner(s)
WWE can announce a tag title match in advance, but just like last week when they kept cutting away from Usos vs. American Alpha to show us Fit Finley & Jaime Noble talking to commissioner Shane McMahon as he walked to the stage, we know the real score.
Tonight, we should get the official announcement of McMahon vs. AJ Styles at WrestleMania 33. Shane made the match himself to close the March 14 episode, but General Manager Daniel Bryan wanted to give him time to clear his head. It had just been put through a car window by the Phenomenal One, after all.
AJ was, and presumably still is, pissed his winning several weeks worth of #1 contender matches was thrown out when Randy Orton revealed his plot to get revenge on Bray Wyatt. It was the latest in what he thinks have been a series of management moves to screw him out of the top spot on the blue brand, despite Shane & DB regularly singing his praises.
So, now he’s gonna get a big marquee Mania match that a lot of fans feel is beneath him. The reaction may be as good as the set-up, and we should get more of both tonight.
The Title Scene
► Speaking of Orton/Wyatt, last we saw the World champ, he was smearing his dead sister’s ashes on his face and proclaiming to have been imbued with Satanic powers by Abigail. Just another day on the compound, and the Viper may be having flashbacks to when he thought he could kill the legend of Undertaker.
► Baron Corbin wasn’t impressed that Intercontinental champion Dean Ambrose brushed off his forklift attack without even checking into the hospital. The Lone Wolf threw down the gauntlet for a match on April 2, and we should get this piece of business finalized tonight, too.
► Yes, Jimmy & Jey beat the tag team titleholders in a match where the belts weren’t on the line, so when they do it again in Connecticut, Chad Gable & Jason Jordan can lose the straps. If they’re gonna get on the card for Orlando, they probably either need that or some other shenanigans to happen to trigger a quick rematch.
► It’s the whole division (except for Nikki Bella & Maryse, more on them in a moment) against Women’s champ Alexa Bliss in less than two weeks. And beyond Becky Lynch, Carmella, Natalya and her former ally Mickie James, Little Miss Bliss also has to worry about surprise entrants...
Other stuff to keep an eye on:
► Nikki & her man John Cena were tired of Miz & Maryse having spent the last week running down their relationship and claiming Bella politicked Mrs. Mizanin out of a job on Total Divas, so they ran them off Miz TV. The GM agreed with his sister-in-law that enough is enough, so we’ve got ourselves a mixed tag at the Ultimate Thrill Ride.
► After declaring himself for the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal, Mojo Rawley was feeling pretty good about himself. Then that darn Dolph Ziggler rained on his parade... and wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of an actual match, walking out when he wasn’t able to get a quick win. Long story short... I think they’re feuding.
► There was all sorts of announcer drama last week. We’ll see who’s there tonight, and what they say to each other.
