Studio Update from John Taylor

We're going to try and get you these more often. From the computer of Mr. John Taylor:

It's kinda dark in here. That's the first thing you'd notice. We're all used to it, but it would certainly put someone off if they entered out of the straight world (I can imagine my Mother saying 'How can you see anything in here?") The music goes around and around infinitesimally, at whatever stage we're at in the making of a record, you got to find joy in repetition (I do).

We're mixing today, a song for the new album. It's a noisy one, quite aggressive in places, and Mike Patterson our Engineer/Co-Producer is working several knobs at once so that Simon sounds just the right mixture of nasty and cool. It's new territory for us, this song.

It's about alienation…or is it? I have to be careful making assumptions about Simon's lyrics. The chorus line, 'We go under the wire, we go in under fire..' but this war zone is domestic, a council estate.

Nick and I just took portraits of each other for the site. Nick took one of Simon half an hour ago, and we'll probably lure in Mike so you know what he looks like. Now we're both on our computers. We can spend hours online in the studio these days, the internet is really a godsend. Working like this, where we need to be present for hours on end, if only to make a comment every fifteen minutes or so, we just get lost in cyberspace for hours. Yesterday we were googling 'early Duran Duran tour dates'. Losers!

There are five pairs of speakers in this room (we're in Chiswick, West London) and Mike moves the sound from one set to another as we work to get the sound just right. There's the big fuck-off pair built into the wall (my personal favourites, as they're like nothing you could have at home), a pair from our own studio in Battersea, some Yamaha NS10s (generally considered the 'industry standard', yawn), a pair of small speakers known as Auratones, always meant to imitate TV, and a pair of Rolands, rather like a nice Bose set. These we seem to be gravitating to most.

The final drip of my espresso has gone cold. I'm the coffee drinker here. When I came back to the UK to work with the guys again I could not believe how much tea was consu-med. British cliché, right? Charlie is a tea drinker, basic PG tips stuff, unless it's after dinner, then he has the most sophisticated selection of herbal teas I've seen anywhere. Roger is also yer basic tea drinker, as is AT. Nick, as you probably know, 'doesn't drink hot drinks'. Never has, never will. Anyway- what was my point? Ah yes, that I am the coffee drinker, as if I'm not manic enough!

Enough of that. A mix- that's what we're doing now. Shall I explain? On this song we recorded 'the band' playing the song live. That's Roger drumming, me bassing, Andy approximating the wall of sound he will build later, and Nick ditto. Simon puts down sketch, usually a chorus line he likes, which is a suggestion enough of an idea that he will fill in over time. Then Roger would have gone over that recording, possibly rerecording the whole kit again, but certainly adding toms or percussion. Nick likes to fine-tune his parts in his studio, he usually allows two days a song- his shit is pretty complex, even on the simpler songs. Andy might adjust his guitar part, (he likes to work at night) as might I, (who likes to work during the day) although I think on this one the bass all belongs to the first day.

We have been working on around fifteen songs over the last couple of months, so by the time Simon got the lyric polished off for this, we had probably been listening to the rough idea for twelve weeks or so. It's all about fine tuning, but without losing the energy and attitude of the original take. Now all these parts that we have been adding have to be balanced- thus carving out the best possible rendition of the song. This can take several days just for one song. We are on day two with this one, but there's no reason why we shouldn't finish it tonight.

Come già sottolineato diverse volte, non sono molto abile con l'inglese (a scuola la mia prima lingua era il francese! SIGH! ), ma le ultime news nel sito dd.com, del mio caro JT, mi hanno così colpito che.... insomma, leggendo mi sembrava proprio di essere lì, in quello studio di registrazione, e vedere JT bere caffè e gli altri the!

Così leggendo nella MB di "Duran.it", ho letto le bellissime traduzioni fatte da Matteo Bass e Giovanni Taylor.

E' un po’ buio qui . E' la prima cosa che notereste.
Ci siamo tutti abituati, ma metterebbe certamente a disagio qualcuno che entrasse dal mondo esterno (riesco a immaginare mia madre dire “come fai a vedere qualcosa qui dentro?”).
La musica va all'infinito, a prescindere dallo stato di avanzamento del disco, devi cercare la gioia nella ripetizione (io lo faccio).

Oggi stiamo mixando una canzone per il nuovo album.
E' molto rumorosa, abbastanza aggressiva in alcuni punti, e il nostro tecnico/Co-produttore Mike Patterson sta smanettando con diverse manopole alla volta per fare in modo che la voce di Simon abbia il giusto mix di cattiveria e bellezza.
Questa canzone è una cosa completamente nuova per noi.
Parla di alienazione ... o cosa? Devo stare molto attento nell'interpretare i testi di Simon.
Il ritornello dice: "We go under the wire, we go in under fire..”
ma questa zona di guerra di cui si parla è familiare, zona franca.

Nick ed io e ci siamo appena scattati delle foto per il sito. Nick ne ha fatta una di Simon mezz’ora fa e, probabilmente, coinvolgeremo Mike, così saprete che aspetto ha.
Adesso siamo entrambi sui nostri computers. Internet è davvero una manna dal cielo, in questi giorni potremmo trascorrere delle ore online nello studio. Lavorando così come stiamo facendo dobbiamo essere presenti delle ore per finire, anche solo per fare un commento ogni quindici minuti o giù di lì, e così noi ci perdiamo per ore nel cyberspazio.
Ieri cercavamo su Google “prime date tour Duran Duran”...Perdenti!

Ci sono 5 coppie di casse in questa stanza (siamo a Chiswick, ovest di Londra) e Mike sposta il suono da una coppia all'altra mentre cerchiamo di ottenere il sound giusto.
C'è il grosso fottuto paio integrato costruito nel muro (le mie preferite, poichè non assomigliano a nulla di ciò che potresti avere a casa), ci sono quelle dello studio di nostra proprietà a Battersea, alcune Yamaha NS10 (generalmente considerate lo “standard del settore”, che noia), un paio di piccoli diffusori chiamati Auratones, che imitano il suono della TV, e un paio di Roland, piuttosto che un bel set Bose. Questo è quello che usiamo di più al momento.

L'ultimo sorso del mio espresso è ormai freddo. Sono io il caffeinomane qui. Quando torno qui in UK per lavorare con i ragazzi, mi meraviglio sempre di quanto the consu-mino.
Stereotipo Britannico, giusto? Charlie è un bevitore incallito di the, bustine PG standard, a meno che non sia dopo cena, in quel caso ha la più sofisticata selezione di infusi di erbe da the che io abbia mai visto. Anche Roger è fondamentalmente un bevitore di the, come pure Andy.
Nick, come probabilmente saprete, "non beve bevande calde", non lo ha mai fatto ne lo farà mai. Comunque - qual'era il filo del discorso? Ah si, io sono il caffeinomane, come se già non fossi abbastanza a mille!

Argomento esaurito. Un mix - ecco cosa stiamo facendo adesso. Devo spiegarmi meglio? Di questa canzone abbiamo registrato le parti strumentali. C’è Roger alla batteria, io al basso, Andy che prepara il muro sonoro che poi completerà dopo, e Nick lo stesso. Simon butta giù uno schizzo, di solito un pezzo di ritornello che gli piace, una cosa che rappresenta abbastanza l'idea che vuole sviluppare nel tempo.
Poi Roger la riprende, possibilmente riregistrando tutta la sua parte ma aggiungendo sicuramente toms o percussioni. A Nick piace ottimizzare le sue parti nel suo studio privato, di solito gli ci vogliono due giorni a pezzo - le sue porcherie sono abbastanza complesse, perfino sulla canzone più semplice. Andy può rifinire le sue parti di chitarra (gli piace lavorare di notte) e lo potrei fare anche io (che però preferisco lavorare durante il giorno) sebbene pensi che su questa il basso sia come si deve sin dal primo giorno.
Abbiamo lavorato su circa 15 canzoni gli ultimi due mesi, così quando Simon avrà il testo giusto anche per questa, saranno probabilmente già una dozzina di settimane che l’abbiamo nelle orecchie.
Tutto sta nel perfezionamento, ma senza perdere l'energia e l'attitudine dell'idea originale. Adesso tutte queste parti che abbiamo aggiunto devono essere bilanciate - per ottenerne la miglior resa possibile.
Ciò può richiedere diversi giorni anche per una sola canzone. Siamo al secondo giorno per quella in questione, ma non c'e' ragione per cui non dovremmo finirla stasera.

A me non sembra, ma lo spero....Già io ho i suoi stessi colori preferiti e una delle sue passioni(solo una, il basso)...Mi manca solo la sua stessa scrittura!!!!
