    [From: brainwashed.com/bark/projects-coil.html]

Although I was hoping to stay out of the spotlight, circumstances are now forcing me to comment publicly.

As many have speculated, I am the person who has proceeded with Threshold Archives and the Coil releases that were recently announced.

Sleazy sought my help beginning in 2006 arranging archival reissues and we formulated an agreement between Brainwashed Archives/Theshold House. Peter and I spent time together in 2008 when he stayed a week during the Brainwaves festival and deals were signed. Following Peter's death, this project was encouraged, supported, and contributed to by both Drew and Thighpaulsanda, other guests and friends, and has received the full endorsement of Geff's surviving family, who has stated:

"do as you see fit, it makes sense for the quality to be out there"

My intention at this point was remove Brainwashed from the name and launch Threshold Archives by finishing the project Peter and I began, with the hopes of turning over control for beautiful, fully remastered stunning LPs of the "proper" releases at some point in the future.

Operating a record label is not my full-time job and I do not want it to be. I hereby state that profits will be shared with all band members involved, even those who are opposed to these CDs being released, as well as surviving family.

The quick, swift release of these items are an effort to head-off bootleg practices, which continue to run rampant worldwide.

Thighpaulsandra has stated to me in an email from September 2015:
"If your releases are not perceived as ultimately desirable objects they will just be regarded on a par with all the bootlegs. I think the packaging and presentation needs to be of a standard that G&S would have approved of. I tried to ensure the books met their standards. I hope your CDs will do the same."

I hope so too, and I hope you support the practices of the kind stores and distributors who carry these physical items because life obligations do not permit me to operate a mail order business in a full-time capacity.

    Sincerely yours,

    Jon Whitney

Brainwashed Archives is the only establishment that has been authorized to reissue COIL music from the vaults.

All other materialization of COIL music: physical, digital, ether, or any other form from this point onward should be regarded as unauthorized.

There is a trail of conversations from electronic and snail mail to back this up and much more information will be revealed in due time.

"Backwards was started in London directly after LSO, move to New Orleans, developed a lot, moved back to Weston, and thence to Bangkok. Brainwashed will be releasing one or maybe two cd collections documenting this history later in the year, and these along with all other demos and recordings of any interest..."

    - Peter Christopherson, May 2010

Altri dettagli sul tanto cercato Backwards:

What is it? This is the proper release of the 1996 finished version of Backwards that was shelved.

What's the Backwards backstory? It was originally a followup to Love's Secret Domain. Demos were recorded. Geff had some vocal training. He and Peter and Danny Hyde (Engineer and Contributor, and arguably an unofficial/semi official member, he was the Rave to their Puppy) headed to New Orleans to stay with Trent Reznor and write and record more & flesh out the demos. Drew McDowall (Coil member for awhile) joined them in NO. The record was "completed."

Why was it shelved? Interscope meddling. It was slated to be released on Nothing Records. Interscope demanded that, amongst other things, Peter could only do music videos for Interscope artists (this would significantly hinder Coil's cash flow, as Coil was a labor of love, and Peter's video work paid the bills.) They said fuck off. Trent being Trent was fine with that, shrugged, and went back to playing Doom 2. So they left it in a box somewhere for years.

Why now? No idea, but it's been in purgatory for some time. Danny Hyde decided it was time, so he teamed up with Justin at Cold Spring to do it. At least one version was mastered year or two ago so it's been on the drawing board for awhile. Drew doesn't seem to have anything to do with it.

Uh oh, what's all that drama about Rights and such? Coil was never a business, it was a labor of love, art. As such, contracts were never really their thing. Neither were wills and all that. There are a few people with claims to rights and/or financial interest, but honestly, who knows and it's really none of our fucking business.

Well, we all know i'm going to buy it anyway, so what should i expect? Danny says it's the stylistic link from LSD to Musick To Play In The Dark, and i agree. Nasa-Arab is another good point of reference. Backwards, as an album and as loose tracks/stems, exists in several forms already, they are, in order of appearance:

A: The Backwards Demos: Rough Cuts - Just as it sounds. Seeds for what became what's being released. You can find these easily on archive.org.
B: Live - Elves, A.Y.O.R, A Cold Cell, and Backwards were all played live at various points.
C: Compilations: AYOR and A Cold Cell both appeared on the Russian "Best Of" Compilations, and Peter remixed A Cold Cell for a compilation of which the name escapes me.
D: The Ape Of Naples: - Has a few reworked/alternative versions/iterations of Backwards tracks (Fire Of The Mind, I Don't Get It, Heavens Blade, Cold Cell, Amber Rain)
E: The New Backwards - Peter did this in Thailand. Same as tracks from Ape, culled from Backwards.

So what's coming out is Backwards "as it should be." The tracklisting is as follows:

    1: Intro
    2: Backwards
    3: Amber Rain
4: Fire Of The Green Dragon
5: Be Careful What You Wish For
    6: Nature Is A Language
    7: Heaven’s Blade
    8: Copacaballa
9: Paint Me As A Dead Soul
10: AYOR (It’s In My Blood)
    11: A Cold Cell
    12. Fire Of The Mind

Some of these are substantially different than what you've heard....the version of Amber Rain in particular is my favorite Coil song, hands down, featuring field recordings of Cicadas not present in the Ape version. Heaven's Blade is a "dance" version with a 4/4 beat. Some are just slightly different mixes.

Wait, how do you know all this?

Well....i dont. I havent heard it yet. But, with apologies for the humblebrag, i've had 2 versions of this for a few years now, one of which is 10 tracks and one of which is 12. The 12 track version has tracks on it that dont seem to be appearing on the final release, which is kinda surprising to me for being "definitive."

    Awesome. Anything else?

Yep: I took the liberty of stemming out the Backwards Demos to what their bits showed up in, because why not.

BD#= The Backwards Demo & Track Number
A = The Ape Of Naples
B = Backwards (the forthcoming release)
    TNB = The New Backwards
O = Other (annotated in place)

BD1: Heaven's Blade - Became Heaven's Blade on A (slow ethereal version) and Heaven's Blade (much more upbeat/dancey, more similar to demo) on B
BD2: Wir-Click-Wir - The base rhythm became Copacaballa on B and TNB, but not much else was used. Versions on B and TNB are substantially different
BD3: Elves - The lyrics "God Please Fuck My Mind For Good" became Careful What You Wish For on B and TNB (also a t shirt. Also, this was played live at Sonar in Barcelona in 2000) (Also worth noting there is a mastered, fully fleshed out version of this that is apparently not being released on B.)
BD4: Simenon - Became Backwards on B and TND.
BD5: In My Blood - Became AYOR from B, TNB, O (Live at various shows, and on the FEELEE compilation) and a stem of It's In My Blood on A.
BD6: Spastiche - Became I Dont Get It on A.
BD7: Crumb Time - Became Princess Margaret's Man In The D'jamalfna on TNB
BD8: March Of Time - Became nothing substantial, but the rhythm could possibly be the base for Fire Of The Green Dragon on B/TNB. It's a stretch though.

Ecco un'altra ristampa di materiale collaterale, strettamente legato:

Electric Sewer Age. Moon’s Milk In Final Phase. CD

    Label: Soleilmoon
    SKU: SOL185CD

Electric Sewer Age was conceived in 2006, a glowing spark in the imagination of John Deek of Divine Frequency. A brief, cryptic announcement in 2009, followed by a few rough tracks released online, heralded its birth. Announced with nothing more than the tagline “an Infinity of Sewers thrown open beneath the Threshold House”, little was known about this upcoming project other than it likely featured some involvement of former Coil legends Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson and Danny Hyde, and perhaps, it was rumored, with the posthumous contributions of Jhonn Balance. Because Electric Sewer Age was intended to be an anonymous aural experiment meant to free the listeners mind of any preconceptions about who or what created it, little more was ever planned to be publicly revealed about the project, even after the first release. However, following the unexpected and untimely passing in 2010 of Christopherson, the first Electric Sewer Age EP became an epitaph to the loss of this peerless musician, for these were the last tracks he and his decades long collaborator and friend Danny Hyde ever completed together.

The music, originally intended to conclude Coil’s “Moon’s Milk” series, was released on CD by Divine Frequency in 2012, and then on vinyl the next year by Danny Hyde. Both editions sold out quckly and have been unavailable until now.

“Moon’s Milk In Final Phase” consists of four ambient-electronic instrumentals, reissued by Soleilmoon Recordings on CD and deluxe gatefold 12 inch, the latter in two colors — 250 copies on moon green and 250 on celestial black vinyl. A download code is included with each LP.

As codas go, this is a truly moving one, the lights flicker eerily in the East one last time as the brilliant vapor of a life spent in pursuit of uncompromising creation is allowed to leave the lodge and fly away from the shadow of the Black Sun. Like doves released in the hopes of Peace, 'In Final Phase' lets all of us who remember and mourn have our moment of catharsis.

Coil Presents Black Light District: A Thousand Lights in a Darkened Room 2xLP / CD / Digital (DAIS114)

During the transitional period in which Coil’s primary leadership (Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson and John Balance) reorganized their creative direction by taking on new membership in the group through their inclusion of Drew McDowall, Coil took a drastic turn towards the metaphysical unknown. Employing the subtle handiwork of Coil’s “real life” members, as well as the cleverly guised aliases and spiritual collaborators, the band chose to filter their identity through a the nome de guerre, Black Light District, setting the precedent of Coil’s future exploration of otherworldly influence.

Recorded during the Winter of 1995/96, Black Light District reflects more on their formal avant-garde pursuits and academic interests rather than their industrial pedigree resume. Starting off with an obvious nod to John Cage with their introductory “Unprepared Piano”, the tone is prepared in exactly the same way… unpredictable. Conceptually abstract, Black Light District shows Coil’s old guard disregarding the pop rhythms found on previous albums, such as Love's Secret Domain, and fully embracing their experimental electronic trajectory. Subtle patterns of looping melancholy and malaise are placed delicately underneath ghostly electronic timbre. Approaching their creative method as something from the beyond, another realm in which sounds blur and performers seemingly appear from the ether.

ELpH vs. Coil: Worship the Glitch 2xLP / CD / Digital (DAIS115)

"Unexplainable" may well be the best explanation for the members of the UK based electronic outfit COIL. Making a radical shift from intentional accessibility, by means of traditional pop songwriting, to abstract happenstance, Coil had entered into a new phase in their career…uncharted waters utilizing what was then the newest computer technology, digital and analog synthesis and the newly formed ideas that something outside of themselves was steering the ship.

During the studio sessions that developed into what would become “Worship the Glitch”, Coil became aware of random compositions emitting from their gear, and were at odds with constant “accidents” that were perpetually plaguing the recordings. The band called these unintentional emissions "ELpH": a conceptual being that is one part physical equipment, one part celestial being… constantly playing the role of trickster, throwing a wrench into Coil’s methodology. Eventually, these accidents and mistakes were embraced by the band, and the process of misusing audio software to create intentional "errors" was adopted as a musical technique. The acceptance of the "mistake", and the use of discovered mistakes as intentional elements slowly became the drive and concept behind the album, thus birthing the title “Worship the Glitch.”

Originally released in 1995 on Coil’s in-house imprint Eskaton, Worship the Glitch was Coil’s first proper album-length attempt at conceptual ambient composition, with a radical focus on chance. Seamless vignettes of shattered electronics (though ebbing softly and in delicate balance with each other) provide an underlying uncertainty and discomfort to the listener.

Both releases have been remastered by engineer Josh Bonati and supervised by Coil's Drew McDowall, the double LP vinyl releases are packaged in a beautiful matte 24pt stock gatefold jackets. First pressings of the vinyl is pressed on 200 clear, 500 red, 600 blue, and standard black vinyl, with an edition of 500 yellow exclusively for Europe and UK shops and distros.

    COIL

    LOVE'S SECRET DEMISE

These recordings were initially titled 'The Side Effects of Life', which was a working title for COIL's legendary album "Love's Secret Domain". The music presented here are demos / mixes of material that was later released as the "Love's Secret Domain" album and includes parts of the "Wrong Eye/Scope" 7"-single. The original cassette (only a handful are known to exist) was sent to WaxTrax! records in 1989 ahead of the planned future release of "Love's Secret Domain" on the label. The track 'Fidget' was subsequently released on the "WaxTrax!Sampler#2" cassette in 1989. The album was finally released by Torso (Europe) and Wax Trax! (USA) in 1991. These recordings and mixes are incredibly rare, and demonstrate Coil working towards the final pieces that would make up "Love's Secret Domain".

    BILL LASWELL / COIL

    CITY OF LIGHT
    EXCLUSIVE VINYL REISSUE!

Available for the first time ever on vinyl! Bill Laswell is a true musical legend, often referred to as “man with the golden ears“ . He has been involved in hundreds of recordings with countless collaborators from all over the world. Bassist, composer and music producer - enough to say that he was the producer for such legendary albums like Motörhead ‎- “Orgasmatron”, Iggy Pop’s “Instinct”, Public Image Ltd – “Album” or Swans “The Burning World” to name just a few.

In 1997, Bill Laswell released his sixth solo album “City of Light” recorded in Banaras, India, and mixed in Greenpoint, NY. For this album, he invited John Balance and Peter Christopherson from COIL, they did 13-minutes epic composition “Kála”; and Japanese ambient genius Tetsu Inoue, who enriched the album with its characteristic sound. Together they created an amazing conceptual record full of deep drones, tabla-rhythms, and ambient collages. “City of Light” is about Banaras, a city older than history, tradition, and legends. It is Shiva's land, founded at the dawn of creation. It is India's oldest and most fabled city. The Hindus call it Kashi, the luminous... The City of Light.

    THE GAY MAN'S GUIDE
    LIMITED PURPLE VINYL!

Musique Pour La Danse is proud to present Coil's unreleased soundtrack for the VHS only, pre-internet, s_xual education documentary entitled "The Gay Man's Guide..." released in 1992. Members for this project are John Balance, Peter "Sleazy" Christopherson and Danny Hyde.

The OST, to quote John Balance's interview for Compulsion Online, "is [a] slightly new agey, progressive house type thing".

Another way to approach it is as a delightful collection of balearic beats, smoking jazz not far removed from Badalamenti's work with David Lynch, somewhat of an ambient house album for your home listening and early morning sunrise dances, Coil style.

Taken from the original masters provided by Danny Hyde, "The Gay Man's Guide..." features a new edit of the main theme. Bonuses "Nasa-Arab" and "Omlagus Garfungiloops" are taken from the 1992 CD only "Stolen And Contaminated Songs", both being original versions of the radically reworked (for the OST) "Nasa-Arab 2" and "Exploding Frogs" in order to balance the whole album and extend the listening pleasure.

COIL - A Prison of Measured Time 12" / Ltd. 33 €22,50 (OLD EUROPA CAFE)
To be released in November 2019.
NB: €22.50 is pre-order price and might change onece disc out.
The history of these tracks is this:
In 1995 and before I was employed to take tracks home and manipulate the streams to create new content.
The way I did this was a process I called “Rate/Stretch, I won’t go into details, but it was very successful at creating whole new content.
From these experiments came the “scorn“ dreamspace mix, and much of Black Light District.
After we came back from New Orleans working on the “Backwards LP “at Trent Reznor’s studio, Peter Christopherson, asked me to do the same to two tracks,
"Heaven’s blade" and "Wir click Wir (Copacaballa)".
This was 1998 (a year and a half after we left New Orleans).
I started the project, but due to misgivings at the time with the whole music business, I left, and the tracks didn’t get a release.
On these tracks you wil get music unheard.
    1. John Balance vocals some of which never heard before
    2. The trumpet takes we recorded for Wir click Wir, but never had the facility to use.
    - Danny Hyde

A new release on September 23.

IFP presents a long-awaited complete version of
“Sara Dale's Sensual Massage” OST with 8 exclusive and unheard tracks.

Coil - Sara Dale's Sensual Massage
    ::
The album available for preorder on CD, 2LP (in 4 different colors), and Collectors vinyl Box Edition limited to 55 copies. Please check the details in our webshop.

Sara Dale's Sensual Massage was a delightful erotic video with a mystic soundtrack by Coil. Quite unusual for the band dreamy ambient, almost spa-relaxed soft harmonies, bland tribal rhythms, chimes, and birdsong but still with dark mysterious and inimitable Coil musick's charm.
However, the second part of the album explores more rhythmic structures that remind 'Gay Man's Guide...' soundtrack.

Besides the OST recordings, the edition includes bonus tracks from the "Basilisk prod.'s" era: “Theme From Blue”, and grandiose "The Hills Are Alive" so badly wanted on vinyl.

Artwork by Steven Stapleton. Mastering by Martin Bowes.
