[Cease & Desist] DIY! Cult Classics from the Post-Punk Era (1978-1982) collects 15 UK 7" singles recorded between 1978 and 1982, compiled by JD Twitch to showcase the DIY spirit of those times.

"If Punk was the nuclear detonation, the fallout that came after was where a lot of the most interesting music of that era was made. People who would never have thought to release a record before realised it was something they could do, and the end result was a DIY explosion. I've always loved music that doesn't try to fit in a particular genre, that is anti-canonical and doesn't care what else is going on in music at that time, that takes risks and is full of imagination and ideas that may or may not make any logical sense but that resulted in something unique, that ignores conventions about how a record should be produced and that was created simply because its creators felt the urge to express themselves and share the results with some other people. This compilation compiles 15 tracks that fulfil all those criteria. None of them had any success, most are (unjustly) obscure but every one of them has inspired me and would be in my ultimate 7" singles box" – JD Twitch.

This release has been a real labor of love, involving tracing long-lost artists to far-flung corners of the globe, persuading them that the modern world needs to hear the music they made several decades ago, tracking down masters -- lovingly restoring 7"s in place of lost masters in some cases -- and conceiving an elaborate package with detailed sleeve notes to house the double album. Unfortunately, the original choice of title for this release infringed on the copyright of a series of well-known pop compilations released by a certain major label. They sent a cease and desist letter (hence the title of this edition), and did not accept proposed modifications to the original sleeves, so this edition is released in a more conventional package than was intended. Gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves containing sleeve notes and detailed overviews of each individual track by JD Twitch and an introduction by New York's DIY expert Dan Selzer. Includes tracks by Tesco Bombers, Sara Goes Pop, People in Motion, Nancy Sesay & the Melodaires, The Distributors, Dorothy, Thomas Leer, Visitors, The Murphy Federation, The Cro-Tones, Fatal Microbes, Spunky Onions, The Fakes, and The Prats.

Harry Bertoia - Complete Sonambient Collection 11CD Box Set

Harry Bertoia's Complete Sonambient Collection features all 11 of Bertoia's original records newly restored from their master tapes and housed in replica jackets. A heavy duty box, printed with metallic inks, holds the 11 discs as well as a 100-page book containing a lengthy historical essay, an interview with Harry Bertoia from the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, exclusive Sonambient-era material from the Bertoia archive, modern and archival photos of the Bertoia barn, and reflections on Bertoia from David Sefton, Tom Welsh, David Harrington (Kronos Quartet), and all three of Bertoia's children. The Complete Sonambient Collection celebrates 100 years of Harry Bertoia in 2015, the centennial of his birth. In the late 1950s, Harry Bertoia (1915-1978), already a renowned American sculptor, began creating long-form, improvised pieces of music utilizing pure acoustic tones evoked from his sound sculptures. Around this time Bertoia came up with the term "Sonambient" to describe the music and environment created by his tonal sculptures and their lush harmonic overtones. In a renovated barn on his property deep in the Pennsylvania woods, Bertoia curated a harmonious selection of his sculptures and gongs, often recording his frequent, intuitive sound experiments using four overhead microphones and a ¼" tape recorder. Bertoia dedicated the last 20 years of his life to his Sonambient work and in 1970 he released the first Sonambient LP. In 1978, in the final months of his life, he selected recordings from his archive and produced ten more Sonambient records. He would not live long enough to see or hear these records himself. Bertoia died in 1978, at age 63, and was buried beneath a giant gong behind his Sonambient barn. Bertoia's recordings are as much a celebration of sustained tones, slow decay, healing vibrations, and shimmering harmonics as Indian classical music, singing bowls, La Monte Young, or Benjamin Franklin's glass armonica. Through these rich harmonics, pulsing tones, and pure gongs Bertoia was able to more clearly articulate his inner spirit than he could with sculpture alone – a point he made himself many times in interview. His single greatest piece of art is the totality of his life, which is nearly impossible to measure but easy to feel. Important Records hopes that somehow this box set evokes some of the same sacred, personal feeling that one has in Bertoia's barn.

Der Zeltweg - Italian Tapes Industrial Music 1982-84
Limited to 500. For a brief moment Turin was Italy's Sheffield, producing an astonishing number of DIY electronic groups. In the context of a wider Europe, Italy has never been thought of as a hotbed of minimal electronic music, but Mannequin Records compilations Danza Meccanica: Italian Synth Wave 1982-1987 have shone a light on a scene little heard, even within Italy's borders. But the history was still incomplete.. some new horizons now must be unveiled, showing that between the years of 1982 and 1984, the city of Turin in northwest Italy was home to a quiet underground renaissance of experimental electronic music. Inspecting all the bands we released in the past years, Musumeci represents one of the most rare and unknown. But..the reissue of the two super rare demo tapes that they recorded in 1985 ('Schwarz Morgen') and in 1986 ('Zusammen') and a 12'' containing a couple of unreleased tracks plus a TRAXX edit, were just the beginning. Mannequin are really now proud to put the lights on their own tape label Der Zeltweg, with a selection of their 1982-1984 side projects Errata-S-Corrige, Gasdehyde and Herpes-Z. All the demo tapes we had the pleasure to listen simply take no prisoners. Expect aggressive early industrial sounds, with dirty and pulsating rhythms, in the vein of Throbbing Gristle and Cabaret Voltaire. Without being snobbish, Mannequin deeply believe that 'Der Zeltweg' compilation will be one of the 2014 underground highlights.

    TERMINAL SUNGLASSES

    WRAP AROUND COOL
    YOU CAN BUY THIS FROM:
STORMING THE BASE | OUR EUROPEAN SHOP

The psychedelic garage band Terminal Sunglasses were part of the Montreal punk and new wave scene from 1983 to 1985. Labelled an "avant-garage" band, they updated 60s influences with the Velvet Underground's sound, and filtered it all through 1980s punk sensibilities and a wonderful sense of humour. In 1985, they released their only LP, Wrap Around Cool, on the amazing OG Music label. The record immediately shot to the top of the college and community radio charts, remaining at the #1 position for many weeks.

Fronted by Chris Burns (hefty howling, crazy rhythms, dinky leads), with twisted lead and spastic rhythm guitars by Lawrence Joseph, electric bass and harmonica by Foster Grant, and search and destroy drums by george a, the Sunglasses easily take the throne for the weirdest band to ever come out of Quebec. Their songs ranged from the wonderful pop number "Could That be People Crossing My Lawn," to the over-the-top noise improvisation of "Eating Barbie's Feet," to their great cover of the Count Five 1965 garage rock classic "Psychotic Reaction," not to mention the favourite of animal lovers everywhere, "My Cat Got Run Over by a Bus" (previously included on the ultra-rare OG 7" compilation, It Came from Montreal).

The band also produced two videos, one for the catchy "Antenna Dilemna" which was immediately banned from MuchMusic, and a second for "Psycho Rail," which features a cameo by Leonard Cohen, one of the band's biggest fans.

Never satisfied with the sound quality on the original pressing, the band worked with Artoffact Records on a monumental restoration project that included combining several different source tapes and no less than three different mastering studios in Canada. The results are spectacular!

The newly remastered Wrap Around Cool is now reissued on both vinyl and CD with a beautifully written liner-note essay by Bobby Beaton of The Gruesomes, whose first performance was as opening act to the Terminal Sunglasses. Both formats offer previously unreleased photos and gig poster scans. A limited collector's edition on pink vinyl is available in a pressing of 200 copies.

    Pink Vinyl: 200 copies.
    Black Vinyl: 300 copies.
    CD edition.

"Recalls the inept cruddy glory of true garage."
-John Griffin, Montreal Gazette, May 1985

"Streaking with heart-palpitating speed but never thrashing, the
Sunglasses' sound shimmers from one note to another like a pearl sinking
slowly in a bottle of Prell."
-Andrea Enthal, Spin Magazine, June 1986

"The Sunglasses mix it up, from early Velvet Underground style sludge
(their biggest influence, judging from the guitars on this platter) to
Jefferson Airplane freakout guitar, in ska-style uptempo shuffles to REM
type drones. Its all cheap, stupid, immature fun, and like the title
    says, cool."
-Howard Druckman, What Wave Magazine, 1985

    PSYCHE

    INSOMNIA THEATRE
    YOU CAN BUY THIS FROM:
STORMING THE BASE | OUR EUROPEAN SHOP

Artoffact Records is extremely proud to announce the authorized vinyl and CD reissues of the three 1980s albums that introduced Psyche to the world.

Originally self-released in 1985 as a single LP, Insomnia Theatre was Psyche's first album. Its brilliant style mixed dark electronics, new wave, industrial, and horror in ways that--back then--were quite shocking to its first Canadian audience, and which today are seen by synth music aficionados as a master work. With classic cuts The Brain Collapses, Maggots, Eating Violins, and Children Carry Knives, the album made its way to Europe where it was licensed by the pioneering French New Rose label. It also drew accolades from Melody Maker and NME, both of whom loved the record.

Sounds Magazine praised Insomnia for being "dirty in these limpdick times"--which more or less says exactly what anyone could ever want to have said about their debut.

The Artoffact Records reissue is completely remastered and includes several bonus tracks which have never before been released. The base of the recording is the original Canadian LP Mix, with the addition of several tracks from the New Rose 1985 edition, plus bonus tracks from the Contorting the Image EP (1986) and the very rare Unleashed cassette (1988). Singer Darrin Huss personally selected all the bonus material, including the never-before-heard Ice and Mind Over Matter.

The record is housed in a brilliant gatefold sleeve with a brand new cover design, including new photos and a lyric-sheet insert. A limited green vinyl is available for collectors.

    200 copies on brain-ooze green
    300 copies on black
CD jewel case edition with white tray

    Original Reviews:

"Insomnia Theatre is not sleazy but it is commendably dirty in these limpdick times."
-The Legendary Stud Brothers, Sounds Magazine

"Psyche cut far deeper than Nash the Slash, to depths infrequently visited."
    -Vox (Calgary)

"Grandiose themes paint the sky and all that's left to do is lie back and admire the view."
-Kevin Murphy, Sounds Magazine (EP review)

    PSYCHE

    UNVEILING THE SECRET
    YOU CAN BUY THIS FROM:
STORMING THE BASE | OUR EUROPEAN SHOP

Artoffact Records is extremely proud to announce the authorized vinyl and CD reissues of the three 1980s albums that introduced Psyche to the world.

Released 30 years ago on the great New Rose label, Psyche's Unveiling the Secret is in many ways the quintessential underground 80s synthpop achievement. Lauded by fans and praised by generations of musicians including Sven Vath, Joris Voorn, and Eskil Simonsson (Covenant), the album's title track has attained that rare status of an enduring cult-classic.

And if that is all that this album had going for it, that would be saying much. But there is so much more: tracks like The Saint Became A Lush, equally a powerful dance classic itself, recently appeared on Trevor Jackson's famous Metal Dance series, and Prisoner to Desire, which remix producer Joseph Watt of Razormaid fame claimed was a "darker tougher synth pop than Erasure," is as good as the genre gets.

It's no wonder that this record of all Psyche's records is consistently said to be the greatest. It is on this record that Darrin Huss really perfected his vocal style and range, from the sublime melody on Prisoner to Desire, to the controlled chaos of the underrated but masterful Lord Unleashed, to the explosive punk delivery of Caught in the Act, or even the balladesque Taking Chances. Every composition on Unveiling the Secret is a keeper. It's one of those albums that blows you away anew each time, and yet feels like a new album no matter the passing decade.

The Artoffact Records reissue is completely remastered and includes several bonus tracks which have never before been released. Darrin Huss personally selected all the bonus material, including a rare Razormaid mix and the never-before-heard epic Lock The Door. The double-LP comes in a gorgeous gatefold sleeve, and a limited edition red vinyl is also being pressed for collectors. Comes with a beautifully designed lyric insert.

    PSYCHE

    MYSTERY HOTEL
    YOU CAN BUY THIS FROM:
STORMING THE BASE | OUR EUROPEAN SHOP

Artoffact Records is extremely proud to announce the authorized vinyl and CD reissues of the three 1980s albums that introduced Psyche to the world.

Following the success of Insomnia Theatre and Unveiling the Secret, Psyche turned to a classic wave sound on their third and most polished album, Mystery Hotel. While the industrial influence heard on earlier material is less pronounced, Mystery Hotel is in many ways the darkest Psyche album. The demons are alive on tracks like Wake the Flood Unconscious, Nocturnal Passenger and The Outsider, and even poppier numbers like Eternal and Insatiable are, at their core, still melancholia at its finest.

But the tone of this record, and the key to its brilliant longevity, is the blues influence which is sometimes hidden but sometimes, like on the opener Make No Mistake, out in the open as if to say 'yeah we do blues and new wave so what.' When singer Darrin Huss croons HA HA HA HO, he's not just echoing the synthline; he's challenging the whole synthpop construction. Uncivilized, inspired by the brother's fervent joy of ZZ Top, captures this tension perfectly.

On Mystery Hotel, Psyche take Soft Cell and The Doors, and roll them into one crazy insomniac beast. And it works so well you don't mind being one of the insomniacs yourself: Insatiable is an earworm if there ever was one, and Wake the Flood Unconscious is just about the slickest under-three-minutes hangover track you've ever heard. And then there's the brooding, dense marshland that is The Outsider, a synthpop track that borders on psychedelia and shimmers with a brilliance that is possibly unmatched in the Psyche catalogue.

The Artoffact Records reissue is completely remastered and includes several bonus tracks which have never before been released. The double-LP comes in a gorgeous gatefold sleeve, and a limited edition blue vinyl is also being pressed for collectors. Includes rare photos, a newly designed cover, and comes with a beautiful insert lyric sheet.

    CONTROLLED BLEEDING

    DISTRESS SIGNALS I
    YOU CAN BUY THIS FROM:
STORMING THE BASE | OUR EUROPEAN SHOP | BANDCAMP

Artoffact Records is proud to announce the reissue of a significant portion of the Controlled Bleeding catalogue.

Released on Gary Mundy's Broken Flag label in 1984, the first Controlled Bleeding album was Distress Signals, an almost impossible to find cassette-only album of brutal powernoise and experimentally distorted and tortured vocals. The near hour-long performance is immediate and harsh, and the tape has a kind of holy-grail quality amongst collectors, not least because of the special status of Broken Flag, but also because it has never been properly reissued on either CD or vinyl.

Distress Signals I - a completely remastered and restored edition of the original, rare Broken Flag tape.

    200 copies, grey.
    300 copies, black.
    Discounted deal on both versions.

    CONTROLLED BLEEDING

    DISTRESS SIGNALS II
    YOU CAN BUY THIS FROM:
STORMING THE BASE | OUR EUROPEAN SHOP | BANDCAMP

Part of the mystique of Distress Signals comes from Controlled Bleeding's founder Paul Lemos, who, while putting together this reissue series in conjunction with Artoffact Records, insisted that there are actually two Distress Signals recordings, both very different from each other, and one which has never been heard or released in any form. In fact, according to Lemos, the second Distress Signals is the one which was originally intended for Broken Flag, but due to an error or oversight, a mistake in dubbing or who knows what, the audio on the Broken Flag tape is not the performance intended.

From this came the idea to release two editions of Distress Signals:

Distress Signals I - a completely remastered and restored edition of the original, rare Broken Flag tape.

Distress Signals II - Lemos' intended recording, never before released and quite different from the Broken Flag tape.

    200 copies, red.
    300 copies, black.
    Discounted deal on both versions.

    CONTROLLED BLEEDING

    DISTRESS SIGNALS I & II
    YOU CAN BUY THIS FROM:

Distress Signals I and II will be released by Artoffact Records as two separate vinyl editions, as well as a combined double-CD. Digitally remastered from the original tapes.

    CONTROLLED BLEEDING

    BODY SAMPLES
    YOU CAN BUY THIS FROM:
STORMING THE BASE | OUR EUROPEAN SHOP | BANDCAMP

After several tape-only releases in 1984, Controlled Bleeding released its first album on the then-brand new Dossier label in Germany, a label with which Controlled Bleeding would collaborate closely over the next years. Experimental, noise-laden industrial, Body Samples is at times less abrasive than the previous year's tape experiments and was influenced by ambient soundscapes, rhythmic noise, and the early works of Coil. The album also eschews the longer pieces found on the tape releases for a series of shorter works, many under two minutes, reflecting poignantly its name, Body Samples.

Both original vinyl and CD are hopelessly out of print, and the Artoffact Records reissues expand the original vinyl pressing with a healthy dose of unreleased bonus tracks into a gorgeous 2LP remastered edition. The vinyl is housed in a gatefold sleeve and a limited collector's edition on purple vinyl is available in 200 copies.

    200 copies, purple.
    300 copies, black.
    Discounted deal on both versions.

    KNEES & BONES
    YOU CAN BUY THIS FROM:
STORMING THE BASE | OUR EUROPEAN SHOP | BANDCAMP

Originally released on the short-lived Psychout Productions out of Sweden in February of 1985, Knees and Bones was Controlled Bleeding's first vinyl album and was a continuation of the brutal electronics and industrial noise of the first tape releases. In many ways, this album is the definitive industrial record of the period, featuring screeching metal, distorted power electronics, Paul Lemos' guttural, animal-like screaming, and a healthy dose of feedback.

The original Swedish release was a single vinyl with two long tracks of approximately 23 minutes each, one on each side. The Artoffact Records reissue expands Knees and Bones to a double-LP, including a full LP's worth of bonus material, notably the amazing Swallowing Scrap Metal Pt. 5½, which appeared as the final track of the Knees and Bones CD, another hopelessly out of print Controlled Bleeding artifact.

The double vinyl reissue of Knees and Bones is housed in a gorgeous gatefold sleeve. A limited edition on swill-coloured vinyl is being pressed in 200 copies. SWILL COLOURED VINYL. The CD comes in a digipak.

    200 copies, swill-coloured.
    300 copies, black.
    Discounted deal on both versions.

POST INDUSTRIAL NOISE The Official Anthology LP
PIN was an “audio artsemble” conceived in 1982 in Columbus, Ohio by the trio Robert Crise Jr, Gerald F. Nelson, and Dana Riashi Ritchey. They started on a drum machine, guitars, and vocals but quickly evolved to one member on synths and two guitarists on occasional synths. Robert Crise Jr maintained a studio titled “The Center For Contemporary Realism” where he conceived most of the lyrics for PIN. Gerald F. Nelson was a local performance artist, and Dana Riashi (OSU art student) claimed to be the “idea-mediator” between Robert and Gerald. Robert produced a flexidisc of PIN material through an Ohio Arts Council grant and distributed it through the OSU art tabloid “Dialogue”. The accompanying article from Cleveland’s Spaces Gallery noted PIN to have “redigested their input from influence bands such as Tangerine Dream, PIL, and Kraftwerk, to produce their own unique sound”. PIN performed mainly in galleries and occasionally clubs at the time. They produced a cassette release and were soon feeling the pressure to specialize towards more concrete art performance or club venues. It was this pressure that soon led all activity of PIN to a strangling halt unfortunately. Robert soon left Ohio for graduate studies in Detroit where he remains a “future archeologist” today. Gerald and Dana then proceeded to form the outfit Near Paris (reissued on Medical Records in 2013). The output of PIN could be described a more experimental/minimalist offshoot of new wave with pleasant synth sequences blanketed in rich synth tones. Fans of Near Paris will obviously draw comparisons, but the overall feel of PIN is a bit darker and possibly more lo-fi in all aspects. The opening track “Sketch” has a definite cold wave vibe with slightly echoed vocals over a subtle drum machine beat and monotonous synth lines. “Prelude” is a deep instrumental cut with synth and sample interplay resulting in a hypnotic slab of brilliance. The tracks on this collection have been restored from the original analog tape reel for this reissue. For fans of the previously reissued Near Paris and other synth outfits such as Chris & Cosey, early 80s new wave, and even more edgy artists such as Suicide. Remastered by Martin Bowes at the Cage Studios, UK. Presented on high-quality 180gram heavyweight vinyl.

RICHARD H. KIRK Never Lose Your Shadow 12"

We’re honored to present a 12” EP of tracks from the archives of Sheffield based electronic music legend Richard H. Kirk, entitled “Never Lose Your Shadow”. Kirk first came to prominence in the 1970s as a member of the seminal industrial band Cabaret Voltaire. His first release as a solo artist, Disposable Half-Truths, came out in 1980 on Throbbing Gristle’s Industrial Records label and since then he developed a solo career parallel to the band until its dissolution in 1994.

On the EP, we compile tracks originally recorded between 1978 and 1987, which have never before been released on vinyl. The title track, ‘Never Lose Your Shadow’ blurs the lines between harsh industrial, dance floor, and no wave. This is one we’ve been playing out for a while now and wondering why it hadn’t been pressed on vinyl. The other three tracks are more experimental and reference ideas Kirk was exploring in Cabaret Voltaire at the time. When asked specifically about this collection, Kirk explains that “none of the tracks were outtakes for Cabaret Voltaire, they were always solo tracks, although I think ‘Never Lose Your Shadow’ was vey much a blueprint for the material that Cabaret Voltaire recorded for Virgin / Some Bizarre between 1983-85. The minimal sequencer / drum machine lockdown that I used later for Cabaret Voltaire was pioneered on this track. Lyrically, ‘Never Lose Your Shadow’ was inspired by the 1971 speed freak road movie ‘Vanishing Point’, amongst other things.”

    THE BOX @Doublevision CD

The Box were formed in 1981 in Sheffield out of the ashes of Clock DVA. DVA members Paul Widger,Roger Quail and Charlie Collins recruited new member Terry Todd and tried several vocalists including Stephen Mallinder of Cabaret Voltaire before deciding on Peter Hope. After two albums on Go Discs they linked up with the Cabs' Doublevision label where they released some EPs in a more electronic style. Klanggalerie now proudly presents the collected Doublevision works by this phenomenal group, including several remixes by Richard H. Kirk - two of which remained unpublished until this CD collection. In the unlikely case of you not knowing what The Box sound like: imagine a Sheffield funk band with elements of jazz & sax, a Cab Volt meets Miles Davis kind of music with a vocalist that could also be Captain Beefheart.

    ESPLENDOR GEOMETRICO

    FUNGUS CEREBRI
AMAZING DOUBLE VINYL OF RARE TRACKS!

Fungus Cerebri (Selected Tracks From Cassettes 1981-1989) is a double LP in DELUXE gatefold sleeve which includes a selection of tracks by Esplendor Geométrico originally released on cassette, recorded between 1981-1989.

All tracks have been remastered from the original tapes for this edition. The 16 tracks are taken from "Sinn & Form" cassette compilation (Daterverarbeitung 1982), "En directo Madrid y Tolosa" (EGK 1987, cassette), "Esplendor Geométrico en Roma" (EGK 1986, cassette), "Madrid Mayo 89" (Línea Alternativa 1990, cassette), and "Diez años de Esplendor" (Línea Alternativa 1991, double cassette).

The 80s are a period particularly appreciated by the followers of this cult band, pioneers of the more rhythmic strain of industrial music. Minimalism, raw and harsh analogue electronica, distortion, Arabic sounds, shortwave radio recordings are all typical elements of their style during this first period of Esplendor Geométrico, when they achieved a sound ahead of its time which is still imitated nowadays.

Esplendor Geométrico were always very present within the 80s international scene of under- ground cassette labels. This double LP is the first one of a series dedicated to this movement in Spain, still very unknown despite its activity at the time, with dozens of labels operating from different cities. Artwork by Juan Carlos Sastre, founding member of Esplendor Geométrico. Track selection by Andrés Noarbe, the band's manager since their beginnings in 1980 and director of Geometrik Records.

    Various
Sharon Signs to Cherry Red - Independent Women 1979 - 1985

Released Out Now Label rpm Cat no. rpmd532

Our Compilation of the year gets released on vinyl and we have a Rough Trade / Night School exclusive. Limited to 300 copies on red vinyl.

RPM proudly presents a compendium of the demo cassette generation from the early 1980's, filtered through (principally British) independent women of the post-punk era.

'Sharon Signs To Cherry Red' began life as the archetypal independent single released on the obscure Lowther International label by archetypal independent act, The Kamikaze Pilots, the review of whom by Danny Kelly, NME gives us the starting point: "Disturbingly, also from Norwich...comes this plaintive tribute to / assassination of all the earnest misery gobs ever signed to Cherry Red's roster, with particular reference to the Tracey Thorn pantheon". What was a gentle mocking of The Marine Girls et al is now being hailed by RPM as a noteworthy offering in its own right, suggesting it represents a defining group of female voices from the period who performed and recorded in all manner of genre and styles.

As the parent group of RPM Records is Cherry Red Records, the once mocked is now able to celebrate one and all. Many of these artists were night-time John Peel session regulars, fighting for daytime coverage in the press, walking the fine line of questioning from the NME (hip young gunslingers asking sexual politics) and Smash Hits (Milton Keynes readers asking which hairspray they used). 'Sharon...' is an eclectic soundtrack for the early '80s covering post punk, mod revival, '60s revival, independent scene, rockabilly / cowpunk, garage, London soul / funk, reggae dub and commercial pop, pre C86 with its looking back and looking forward, and what it isn't, the extremes of the SAW production line of the late '80s and another era entirely.

The DIY culture described in our title song is illustrated on the compilation through several unreleased demos, of the sort which were common currency in the day, plus many new to CD tracks. 30 years on from 'Sharon Signs To Cherry Red', Sharon finally signs to Cherry Red with this extensive 2CD digipak compilation. It features the Kamikaze Pilots, Marine Girls, Dorothy, Twa Toots, Strawberry Switchblade, Dolly Mixture, The Petticoats, Family Fodder, Delmonas, Trixie's Big Red Motorcycle, Sarah Goes Shopping, Vivien Goldman and more.

    Michele Mercure
    Eye Chant

The outstanding maiden release on Pete Swanson’s Freedom To Spend label is a reissue of Michele Mercure’s sublime obscurity Eye Chant (1986), which was originally issued under her then married name, Michele Musser, and has since become a proper collectors item regarded for its patently otherworldly blend of minimal wave, new age ambient and creamy, krauty electro boogie.

In the early ‘80s, with a background working as a cell animator, and hailing from a mid-sized industrial town, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, USA, Michele was embedded in the the town’s visual arts community but suffered for lack of decent music - a familiar whinge from anyone who grew up outside of the big cities - so she made her own wickedly inventive and expressive sound using synths, effects, tape loops, vocals.

Her visual and musical worlds first gelled in a 1983 soundtrack for Samuel Beckett’s Waiting For Godot, followed by three self-released cassettes which built on that aesthetic, creating a richly synaesthetic style of highly visual yet mostly minimalist music.

Released a few years later, Eye Chant was the pinnacle of her output, and is now revealed to the world at large, thirty years later. From the rim we’re sent skyward into the waltzing orbit of Tour De France (Day 2) and kissed with the budget Jean Michel-Jarre vibes of In The Air, handing over to the wistfully primitivist incantation, The Intruder and hitting lightspeed with her soaring soundtrack for a performance art piece, 100% Bridal Illusion, where she calves from ecstatic highs into a scene of tumbling 606 drum machine, seagulls and nods to squabbly free jazz.

The others also live up to her name, almost imperceptibly shifting from glowing microtones to alien noise and slippery, lounging electro fusion with Dream Clock, and then like some salty-curdled ambient stroke in Proteus and the Marlin that uncannily reminds us of mid ‘90s Rephlex charms - think super melodic AFX or Cylob - before melting all over the ‘floor with a wigged-out waltz called Too Much primed for the back room at One Eyed Jack’s.

It’s easy to hear, this is strongly tipped to fans of Julia Holter, Suzanne Ciani, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, AFX, Irdial Discs.
