Honda's Jake Zemke won his first-ever Superbike race at Brainerd, emerging victorious after a confusing red-flag situation which happened after he took the checkered flag. Honda's Miguel DuHamel was second, followed by Suzuki's Mat Mladin.

Zemke took the checkers with light rain falling on the circuit and the riders clearly looking for traction on the final lap. Both Miguel DuHamel and Zemke fought for the lead on the last of the 21 circuits but conditions were deteriorating rapidly. Zemke took the checkered flag, but then the red flag was flown before all competitiors past the start-finish line because two separate crashes, one by Jeremy Toye and another by Jack Pfiffer and Greg Fryer crashed in turn ten. There were also cornerworkers running across the track, just in front of the leaders.

The finish sparked controversy because the official AMA rulebook reads that the race isn't officially over until all riders take the checkered flag. And if the results reverted to the previous lap as is normal with a red flag situation, Miguel DuHamel would have won the race as he was the leader at the line on lap 20.

The situation marred an otherwise excellent race, as Zemke clearly deserved the victory. He passed DuHamel in turn two on the last lap and remained in front until the hijinks began.

Zemke, DuHamel, and Mladin were shadowed by Ducati's Eric Bostrom in a close fourth place.

Honda's Ben Bostrom latched onto the lead four rider pack until the final lap and took fifth spot.
