Who needs Joey Harrington? Drew Bledsoe's coming-to-town gift included the draft's best offensive tackle (Mike Williams) to protect his fanny and a sure-handed wide receiver (Josh Reed) who might have first-round impact. DE Ryan Denney is a Phil Hansen type. Baltimore — 4 stars
Top picks S Ed Reed, a big-play artist with added dimension of impact on special teams, and DT Anthony Weaver will help immediately. WR Ron Johnson is big, productive, but lasted until the fourth round because he's not a blazer.
Miami — 3 1/2 stars
Started their draft in February, trading a No. 1 pick for a proven running back with dreadlocks (Ricky Williams). This weekend's action didn't begin until the 90th pick (C Seth McKinney), leaving Dave Wannstedt plenty of time to contemplate. Cincinnati — 2 stars
Provided first reach of the day in OT Levi Jones, then added productive S Lamont Thompson. Can a team that keeps getting in top 10 be trusted?
New England — 3 1/2 stars
Champs moved up nine slots for TE Daniel Graham, then started working on next year's draft by working the deal to ship Bledsoe for a 2003 first-round pick. Cleveland — 4 stars
NFL's worst-ranked running game adds best running back on board, William Green. Too slow? The same was wondered about Emmitt Smith. WR Andre Davis is a flyer who will help on special teams.
New York Jets — 2 1/2 stars
Expected to go heavy on cornerbacks, Jets bypassed top prospects Lito Sheppard and Mike Rumph for edge rusher Bryan Thomas. Second-round S Jon McGraw may have been available later. Pittsburgh — 4 stars
Steelers add first-round OL Kendall Simmons, a guard with ability to play tackle. Later, they added Slash III in Antwaan Randle El, who fills immediate roles as a slot receiver/returner.
AFC South AFC West
Houston — 3 1/2 stars
Stakes immediate future on No. 1 overall pick, QB David Carr. Will new weapon, Jabar Gaffney, fare better than other Gators wide receivers in the NFL? Denver — 3 stars
WR Ashley Lelie has great speed but must make the transition from run-and-shoot scheme and gorgeous climate. With 51st pick, Mike Shanahan couldn't resist RB Clinton Portis — despite the gang of Terrell Davis, Mike Anderson and Olandis Gary. Need a running back? Call Shanahan.
Indianapolis — 4 stars
DE Dwight Freeney at No. 11 overall? Smallish speed rusher (30 1/2 sacks the last two years) makes perfect sense for Tony Dungy, rebuilding porous defense into fast unit for a dome. A la Rams of '01, Colts were on a mission and loaded up by picking defenders with first six picks. The common denominator: speed. Kansas City — 4 stars
Chiefs were intent on DT Ryan Sims, rather than any of the other highly-rated tackles, and paid a third-round pick to move up two slots. They earned style points for swinging a deal with Dallas after clock expired but before Minnesota could claim Sims. Second-round DT Eddie Freeman has good quickness.
Jacksonville — 3 1/2 stars
John Henderson fills need after two defensive tackles departed. A better pick than Albert Haynesworth or Wendell Bryant? Second-round OT Mike Pearson is on the light side (304 pounds) but has quick feet; as heir to departed Tony Boselli, he fittingly had the college nickname "Baby Boselli." Oakland — 5 stars
Loaded with picks, Raiders maneuvered to get CB Philip Buchanon — projected as possible top-10 choice — with 17th pick. Got best linebacker in draft, too (Napoleon Harris).
Tennessee — 4 stars
In DT Albert Haynesworth, they get the player with most upside athletic potential to put on front with Jevon Kearse. Haynesworth could become this draft's Warren Sapp. Will he stay focused? Great names in S Tank Williams and LB Rocky Calmus. Although some question how Calmus will adjust as pro, he was plenty productive at Oklahoma. San Diego — 4 stars
Best cornerback in draft, Quentin Jammer, fell in Chargers' lap. The name fits: Jammer is a bump-and-run specialist. Second-round G Toniu Fonoti was a great bargain after being projected as a Round 1 choice. WR Reche Caldwell has promise.
NFC East NFC North
Dallas — 5 stars
Took hard-hitting S Roy Williams and hard-nosed G Andre Gurode early, then WR Antonio Bryant and CB Derek Ross, intriguing later picks with first-round talent. FB Jamar Martin is exceptional blocker. Chicago — 5 stars
Used two of top three picks on offensive linemen, getting OT Marc Columbo and nice value pick in G Terrence Metcalf. No. 2 CB Roosevelt Williams has great promise. Fourth-round DE Alex Brown, a speed rusher, was excellent value pick. Keep an eye on sixth-round RB Adrian Peterson, a record-setter in Division I-AA, as a solid backup.
New York Giants — 3 stars
Coach Jim Fassel should have no problem incorporating TE Jeremy Shockey into a passing scheme. No. 2 WR Tim Carter has great speed. Detroit — 4 stars
Snagged Joey Harrington with third pick and changed flow of Round 1, despite public vouching of QB Mike McMahon and projections that they would take Jammer. Harrington is perfect for West Coast scheme. DE Kalimba Edwards is an edge rusher similar to one of his new tutors, Charles Haley.
Philadelphia — 3 1/2 stars
With three defensive backs — Lito Sheppard, Michael Lewis, Sheldon Brown — Eagles bolstered an already strong secondary and sent a message that they intend to match up better with wide-open passing games. Third-round RB Brian Westbrook adds punch to passing, return game. Green Bay — 3 stars
Moved up eight spots to get fast WR Javon Walker to team with Terry Glenn in revamped group of targets for Brett Favre. Hard-hitting S Marques Anderson will be groomed to replace LeRoy Butler.
Washington — 3 stars
Traded down for extra picks. With last pick in Round 1, Steve Spurrier got his young quarterback to groom in Tulane's Patrick Ramsey. Second-round RB Ladell Betts provides receiving option from backfield. Minnesota — 3 stars
With a former line coach Mike Tice as head coach, the Vikings moved to beef up a front that has been decimated. First-round OT Bryant McKinnie never allowed a sack in college.
NFC South NFC West
Atlanta — 4 stars
Big RB T.J. Duckett was grabbed with No. 1 pick. LB-DE Will Overstreet is a tweener with a reputation for great effort. Also added solid technique C Martin Bibla and a backup for QB Michael Vick in Kurt Kittner. Arizona — 3 stars
Start with pick for the defensive line in DT Wendell Bryant, then added Dennis Johnson, a defensive end with upside potential. Third-round QB Josh McCown is an athletic type who may someday provide an option if Jake Plummer stumbles.
Carolina — 3 1/2 stars
DE Julius Peppers has potential to make the biggest impact in the draft, which surely would mark a reversal from Panthers' string of first-round busts. Second-round RB DeShaun Foster, once regarded as top-five pick, slid out of Round 1 in part because of problems with fumbles. St. Louis — 3 stars
Just like last year, Rams made early moves to boost the defense. LB Robert Thomas has more of what Mike Martz loves: speed. Heisman winner Eric Crouch, perhaps a reach in third round, seems more suited to be a slot wide receiver than a running back.
New Orleans — 4 1/2 stars
WR Donte Stallworth is a breakaway threat to turn quick slants into long touchdowns. DE Charles Grant must prove worthy of first-round status, but he's needed after Joe Johnson's departure. Also added the best center in the draft, LeCharles Bentley, and got good value with CB Keyuo Craver. San Francisco — 3 1/2 stars
With no need to find an immediate starter, 49ers did more work to upgrade a defense that must match up against vaunted Rams' offense. Got solid CB Mike Rumph and high upside value in LB Saleem Rasheed. With 49ers' history of quarterback gems, fifth-rounder Brandon Doman may yet live up to his moniker, "The Domanator."
Tampa Bay — 2 stars
With top picks sent to Oakland to pay for coach Jon Gruden, action finally began with 86th pick: Marquise Walker, a big, go-to wide receiver with great hands and average speed. A third-round steal? Small RB Travis Stephens was productive at Tennessee. Seattle — 2 stars
Moved down to pick TE Jerramy Stevens, a prospect with checkered past. May have reached for RB Maurice Morris and DE Anton Palepoi.
