Cézanne: The Dawn of Modern Art

Cézanne: The Dawn of Modern Art will offer new insights into one of Modern art's most complex artists. This highly focused exhibition will trace the influence of Paul Cézanne's work on a succeeding generation of twentieth-century artists, looking particularly at the work of Georges Braque, André Derain, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso. Divided into subject groups, such as Bathers, Portraits, Still-Lifes, and Landscapes, the exhibition will examine specific tendencies in Cézanne's art—including his use of color and affinity for abstraction—that paved the way for both the Fauve and Cubist movements of the first decades of the last century, greatly altering the course of Modern art. The exhibition is organized in conjunction with the Museum Folkwang, Essen.
