Chickens help !!!
Ciao tutti,
I know you all live at least 1000 km to the south but now Belgium and the rest of Europe have WINTER with from 10 cm until 30 cm SNOW and freezing tempertures from -8° until -15° COLD !!!!!
What we can do for or chickens who live outside ?
I give 3 times a day fresh (little warmth up) water.
I give 3 times a week youghurt with muesli + (a little) Cognac.
I give extra vitamines with the food and also extra food.
Are there more suggestions???

Interesting, but i don't understand some things.
Why yogurt help them? What is muesli composed of?
You say you give cognac but is not alcol dangerous for chickens? I ask you because i though to give them red wine but in my opinion it was a little dangerous.

Seems strange but have an explaination.
-Yoghurt is produced by bacterial fermentation of milk. So acid by the bacterial culture also has medical uses, in particular for a variety of gastrointestinal conditions, and in preventing antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Yoghurt is believed to promote good health, possibly because of the probiotic effect of lactic acids present in yoghurt.
-Muesli contains several grains but also dryed fruits which provide extra natural vitamines.
-Cognac I add a little because of the cheering up impact on the complete organisme.
Chickens like it much you should try it out ;-)
PS also pieces of apple I give everyday because of the acid effect it produce so the positive bacteries are stimulated.

L'alcool favorisce la circolazione periferica e aumenta la dispersione di calore, per questo motivo è vivamente sconsigliabile (almeno per l'uomo) assumere alcool per difendersi dal freddo.

Yes exact, but not to much of course !! I use only a very little in that Yoghurt/muesli mixture.
You could say 49% Yoghurt 49% Muesli 2% Cognac

ciao quando cominciai ad allevare polli la prima domanda che mi posi e' stata "ma se fa' freddo resistono?"
cominciai ha leggere dei libri e documenti e trovai che fino a -5° i polli resistevano abitando a roma quindi non preoccupai comunque i pollai li feci coibendati chiusi su quattro lati
dopo qualche anno andando in giro per alcune mostre europee naturalmente sempre di inverno la domanda si ripropose ma come c....o fanno qui' su' ad allevare polli ho visto pollai in legno in germania bellissimi delle vere opere altri tenevano i polli in capannoni chiusi
danny ho visto la tua miscela e' molto nutriente e penso che con quelle temperature ci vuole un pastone molto proteico spero che questo freddo allenti la morsa cosi da poter stare meglio sia tu che i tuoi animali

I tried your mixture this morning, and chickens really liked it! they went crazy :)
I've used some orange juice instead of cognac, they loved it :)

Mah Marco, this make me happy you tell this. I say something more, when you do this on regular basis your chickens will like you soo much they ask for it. (I intend they become much more "hand-tame") And ... of course ... you can keep the Cognac for your self ;-)

Some of them are really hand-tame, maybe too much! I have several hens that fly on my shoulder if they see me drink or eat something...they're sooo greedy! ò_ò
Actually i did not use cognac because i didn't have it! Anyway it's not so cold yet, here in Genova...

Ma lo yougurt non si era detto che i polli non hanno l'organismo per digerire i latticini, è vero o no?

Yes this should be correct the chicken can't digest the "latticini", but that is not the reason for giving the yoghurt. The meaning is creating an acid environnement where the positive bacteries live better in than the "negative" bacteries.
About the cognac !!! Look what the most famouse Holland female breeder give her Moroseta after washing them ;-) (She do this since years before going with them to exhibition)

Ho messo il collegamento al Web page di un selezionatore dell'Olanda che lava il suo Moroseta e dò loro il cognac per recuperare di questo.

Yes Stefano, Il latte contiene molto calcio e quello è buono per il producton delle celle dell'uovo. Ma parlo dell'acido che è yogurt. Ciò particolarmente per di conservazione il envirnnement acido nelle viscere per dare buon spazio ai bacteries positivi.
I hope my Italian is understandable ???

chiedevo se i latticini fossero digeribili..lui risp no ma lo fa per creare quell'ambiente acido affinchè i batteri buoni vivano meglio rispetto a quelli cattivi.Poi ha detto di guardare cosa fa una famosa allevatrice olandese dopo aver lavato le moroseta

x rachele: dicevo appunto che bisognerebbe capire meglio gli effetti del latte e dei latticini in generale sui polli. Io sinceramente non saprei che dire a riguardo.
