SUGGESTIVE PHOTOS

*So, Jil, you are trying to bribe the Swiss Guards with Swiss cheese??? Not sure that's going to work. Ah, but maybe several gallons of that wine in the background will knock them out.

*Teresa, do you suppose that note being passed to Papa has somebody's phone number on it? Good to know he accepts notes. Now we have yet another way of attempting to communicate with him.

IDLE THOUGHT
Ladies, quick! Do you know of any other nearly-80 year-old man who has ever been the object of the kind of magnificent obsession that all of us have for our Blessed Beloved Benedict -on this scale, in numbers? Or anyone older than 40, for that matter? [I read Franz Liszt, even in old age and as a priest, continued to attract female devotees as he did when he was the virtuoso toast of Europe, but a) he only lived to 75, and b)I've seen pictures of him at the Liszt Museum in Bayreuth, and
Ratzi wins the looks prize by a mile!]

ON VICTOR
Sylvie, merci - I did see Beatrice's post earlier, with the
magazine cover and the start of the story on Victor, but I thought I would wait for her to post the article itself before
posting everything here in the English translation. However, I realize now, she is scanning an Italian article, which she must translate to French before she can post it...so I will go ahead and post here what she has posted so far.
----------------------------------------------------------------
At the train station, Beatrice noticed the December 14 issue of the Italian magazine Oggi, because the Pope was on the cover, with an accompanying story on Page 2. [Oggi is a People-type magazine].

The words on the cover say:
The moving scene of Ratzinger's prodigy*
In Germany, they shout:
This Pope already works miracles

*The Italian word 'prodigio' can mean both 'miracle' (the act) as well as "prodigy" (the person)

Ratzinger works miracles? In Germany, they say Yes
The Pope's caress has healed Victor

The doctors did not give him any hope: his cancer had metastasized throughout his body. He asked his parents to bring him to Benedict XVI in Cologne. Today, three months after that meeting, the tumor has mysteriously disappeared....
--------------------------------------------------------------

I must point out that I have not yet seen a medically coherent story about Victor - else, we would have carried it already - and that the terms and "facts" reported by the tabloids and celebrity press so far are not objective. So, any sweeping statements made about a possible miracle would probably be premature at best and rather questionable.

I hope the rest of the article is more informative. For instance, if the tumor (which was in the brain, according to the first stories that ever came out about Victor that day in Cologne) has disappeared, how about the metastasis (cancer spread to other organs of the body)?

We are all happy for Victor and hope he has a complete recovery, indeed, but we can't rush to conclusions without knowing more.

How media myth becomes "fact"

Beatrice in the French section shares with us this picture from the OGGI article this week on Victor, the "miracle" boy. The caption to the picture is -
"Showing from under the cassock are shoes signed Prada"
perpetuating a so-far unsubstantiated media myth. (Did the reporter/photographer go up to the Pope and say, "Your Holiness, excuse me, but are you wearing Prada shoes today?
Yes? Then, we will report it!")

Not there's anything wrong with the Pope wearing Prada shoes - he can wear anything he wants that is appropriate.

But the media has been using these loose stories about signature items reportedly used by the Pope to raise overt and subliminal associations with frivolity, expensive tastes, and the like....And I am positive that a secular-cultural history/biography of this Pope years from now will contain something to the effect that "he wore Cartier sunglasses and Prada shoes", whether this is actual fact or not. And that, my friends, is how "history" is made (or rather, made up) in this media-driven age.

Words of the year
Speaking of cultural history, a German society on the German language chose the top 10 buzz words of 2005. #1 was "Bundeskanzlerin" (female Federal chancellor), a German word used for the first time in history because Angela Merkel became one. And # 2 was "Wir sind PaPst" (literally, "We are Pope") - the headline used by the largest-circulation German paper, the tabloid BILD, to announce the gaudiam magnam of 2005.

I like Simone55's comment in the German section of the RFC. She said, "My favorite words of 2005 are Benedict, Ratzinger, Joseph". AMEN!

Re: How media myth becomes "fact"
Very interesting is the fact the media could agree only on the mark of shoes.
The mark of his glasses differs in all newspapers. [SM=g27828]

I don't really understand the worth of the news that Papa wears some trademarks...what did they think he wears? [SM=g27835]

Media create another reality (you maybe remember that Papa as a cardinal was speaking about how media falsificate data).
I have own experience with media informing about event I was present.
I do not think they are independent...if they aren't payed by state they have money from commercials...

Maybe this is a lobby of Prada...world of commerce can use every instruments how to does some company more visible.
I admit that since the "Prada causa" I don't know this trademark.

AS I have read in another blog " its more important to pay attention on what he says and does, than on what he weears".

WHAT ARE THEY DOING!

How many hands do you need to take off the Pope's overcoat?
That's what they're trying to do, though Ratzigirl's gag suggests they're looking for his purse, or perhaps for any sweets he may have hidden!

Anyway, the white overcoat today was a new variation in Papa's
winter wardrobe. But, Papino nostro, watch the belly!!!!

REMINDERS
1) Not that anyone needs reminding - but today is the 19th. If you have any special thoughts, post it in MESSAGES FOR PAPA.
2) Please join the Forum's poll on "Papal Photo of the Year" -
I know, I know, that's a tough one, but you can "nominate" three photos....See the rules in PICTURES AND VIDEOS. Deadline for nominations is 12/23.(I confess I haven't made my own selection yet - so many hundreds to choose from, literally!)
3) Please, please suggest -
a. Any topics you might want to discuss!!! Or just start a discussion somehow! I've introduced several topics in NEWS ABOUT THE CHURCH, but no one's reacting....
b. Any ideas, comments, suggestions on how to energize the
English section and broaden participation
c. Any comments on what you don't like about this section and what changes you want to see....

THANK YOU ALL FOR TAKING PART...

At the end thanks for reminding these things above: Very helpful for me, sclerotic one...

And to all I wish hopeful ending of Advent.
Let's find below the Christmas tree not only newly born "Christkind" but also pure choy of sharing our lives with our God and our dearest.

PAPA "HIT" BY FLYING KISS
Before I proceed to reproduce a gag from Rosa in the main forum, I'd like to thank you, Maklara, for your kind words and most of all, for your participation. I'm trying, but we are missing Benefan's input these past few days as she was on a trip...
--------------------------------------------------------------
Now, for Rosa's gag:

A sister from the Ordine Benedettino delle Suore delle Sante Coccole al Romano Pontefice throws a mega-kiss to our well-beloved Papa.

"Ahhhhh, some ice, I beg of you!...These sisters! Sometimes, they really overdo things!"

"Oh, what a relief!"

CHRISTMAS GOODIES & PAPA'S PANCINO
Papa's known weakness for sweets and his sometimes apparent pancino provide a good set-up for gags this time of year.

Ratzigirl contributes this one:

Ratzi: Ohhhh!!! I love it when they give me sweets! As soon as we're done with the photographs, I can't wait to go and try some of this!

Aide: Holiness, let me take it...You can have it later...
Ratzi: Yes...but...Hmmm...the gift was for me!

Ratzi: I think someone's trying to pull a fast one on me... I smell the aroma of Austrian sweets... And I hear teeth chomping on my sweets!

A LITTLE LATER...

Guest: Holiness, our delegation, too, has brought you some sweets...We know you like them very much...
Ratzi: Ohhh, krazie! Magnifico!

Cardinal (off-camera, approaching dangerously close to the gift): Holiness, let me have it...I'll hold it for you...
Ratzi: Uh-uh, keep your hands off! It can't be safer than in my own hands!

Papa was on concert today
Who knows what did our Papa this evening?
He was on private concert in Sixtine Chapel of Papal music choir.
The concert lasts 30 minutes and his presence was private.

But try to find out what the music programme was...
(hopefully it will be not so secret that they will keep back what the choir was singing) [SM=g27835]

Maklara, I wish someone can help you out about the concert. I didn't even know about it until your post! I don't know if we'll see a replay or an archive copy soon. KTO does not even have Papa's visit to Santa Maria Consolatrice, and the CTV archive has not been updated since October!
------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway, here's something posted by Simone at the German section of RFC, in which she says that the only thing good about this book is Papa's picture on the cover - in which indeed he is at his most ADORABLE - so she scanned the cover. Thank you, Simone!

I referred to this book in the "Books about Benedict" thread - it purports to be a collection of anecdotes and little tidbits about Ratzi, but Simone says in an earlier post after she bought the book two days ago that most of it is already known to "Benedict freaks like us".
