Ben Bostrom claimed his first career Lockhart Phillips USA Formula Xtreme victory at Laguna Seca this afternoon following an unpredictable, once-stopped final.

Bostrom slotted into second behind his American Honda teammate, Miguel DuHamel, at the green light, while polesitter Jake Zemke fell to third. The Erion Honda man quickly showed his pace-setting form, however, diving past Bostrom in Turn 5 on the opening lap, and taking the lead over DuHamel in that same corner a lap later.
Zemke then turned the race into a one-man show, ripping open a multi-second lead in just a matter of laps.
Behind Zemke, Bostrom sat right on DuHamel’s tail, perhaps a bit hesitant to pass and threaten his teammate’s championship position. By lap 8, the Canadian’s pace dropped off to the point where the Californian had little choice; he made his move and looked back to DuHamel, who shrugged his shoulders in reply.
The next time by the stripe Miguel frantically pointed to his bike, while Zemke -- who had opened up a 5.804-second advantage at that point -- suddenly found his machine smoking heavily and dumping oil on the circuit.
The part failure (and resultant oil spill) eventually caused Zemke to run off the track and nearly crash, but he managed to keep it upright as a red flag was shown.
After the track had been cleaned, Bostrom lined up on pole, joined alongside by DuHamel, whose crew -- like Zemke’s -- worked frantically during the stoppage to repair their ailing racebike. Alex Gobert, Vincent Haskovec, Jason Pridmore, and Doug Chandler, who had been caught up in a huge fight for fourth the during the opening half of the race, slotted in the next spots on the grid at the restart.
Meanwhile, Zemke was forced to start from 28th, and to make matters worse, he missed the warm-up lap as the Erion team was unable to make all the necessary fixes in the short time available.
Bostrom took the restart holeshot put in a smooth ride to claim the checkered flag basically unchallenged. DuHamel circulated a safe distance back in second to open his points lead a bit further.
Behind, Zemke gobbled up the field, climbing from the back of the pack to an eventual third -- a remarkable achievement, but certainly less than completely satisfying as a runaway victory and major points haul looked all but certain early in the race.
Zemke’s teammate, Gobert, came home in fourth in a Honda 1-2-3-4, followed by Team Valvoline EMGO Suzuki’s Haskovec.
HMC Ducati runner Doug Chandler took sixth, with Star Motorcycle School’s Jason Pridmore, Triangle Cycle’s Larry Pegram, Hypercycle-backed youngster Nicky Moore, and Buell-mounted Mike Ciccotto rounding out the top ten.
