The news that Brian May and Roger Taylor were to record an album as Queen, with Free and Bad Company's Paul Rodgers on vocals, was met with consternation. What harm, it was asked, might such a venture wreak on Queen's artistic legacy? But, really, what damage is there left to do? Unfairly critically reviled in their heyday - their wit and willingness to take outrageous risks overlooked, their ability to craft perfect pop singles and slip easily between genres ignored - Queen's oeuvre had just been favourably reassessed when the former members unleashed We Will Rock You, a musical that bent over backwards to suggest that the 70s rock hacks might have been right all along: here was a band uninterested in anything other than commercial success. It wasn't just the awfulness of the show itself. It was the crushing effrontery: a Queen musical about how appalling manufactured boybands were, that opened shortly after Queen's surviving members collaborated on a version of its title song with a manufactured boyband, Five, and that celebrated Freddie Mercury's 60th birthday by bringing onstage another manufactured boyband, McFly, to perform Don't Stop Me Now. Whatever The Cosmos Rocks sounds like, it can't conceivably be worse than that.

May's guitar solos are multi-tracked into infinity, the vocal harmonies are laid on thick, Still Burnin' offers a burst of We Will Rock You drums. The tunes aren't great - the best, Small, is a sort of updated, Radio 2-friendly Free ballad - but no harm done. But the lyrics are tripe, of various kinds. There is cliched tripe - we are variously reminded that rock'n'roll will never die, all that glitters isn't gold, you gotta follow your dreams - and mystical tripe: "In an instant the mysteries of life will unfold," promises Time to Shine, perhaps a little rashly. There is tripe that a 59-year-old man should have thought more carefully about: "School's out, I've got a criminal urge to twist and shout." There is antiquated tripe - you don't hear many love songs these days in which a gamblin' man finds himself under a voodoo woman's black magic spell - and tripe of a topical hue. C-Lebrity mocks reality show contestants: given We Will Rock You's attitude to boybands, expect the announcement of a Kate Thornton-helmed quest to find a new member of Queen in next autumn's schedules.

All involved have underlined that Rodgers should in no sense be thought of as Freddie Mercury's replacement, but it's hard to stop yourself wondering what Mercury might have made of all this. The songs might have sounded less awful if they were delivered with a certain knowing camp, a grandiloquence that suggested a sense of the ridiculous. But Paul Rodgers' stock in trade is a kind of pained sincerity: not for nothing was he the favourite vocalist of our erstwhile PM. When he sings "Once I loved a butterfly, don't wonder how, don't ask me why", he sounds as if he quite literally did love a butterfly, like one of those blokes you see on late-night Channel 4 documentaries trying to explain away his intimate relationship with a horse.

Things come to a head on Warboys: not, alas, a hard-rocking paean to the Huntingdonshire village, but a song that admonishes soldiers, whom it appears to hold personally responsible for starting wars. This seems a bit rough on the armed forces. Even the most implacable opponent of the second gulf war presumably accepts that the members of the 5th Regiment Royal Artillery didn't actually come up with the idea to invade Iraq themselves. "They look so pretty as they march and drill," barks Rodgers, capturing the ineffable sultry pulchritude that's very much the trademark of your average British squaddie. "It's such a shame they're dressed to kill."

As with a lot of The Cosmos Rocks, you listen to Warboys boggling that Queen - famously intelligent men - didn't at any point notice that the lyrics were stupid, trite, a bit offensive and bound to have an undermining effect on whatever musical efforts they put behind it. Maybe they're given to underestimating their audience, as indeed you might be if you'd watched 5m people worldwide flock to something as patently shoddy as We Will Rock You. Or maybe We Will Rock You's success has set new, grace-saving standards. After all, however bad The Cosmos Rocks gets, it's never as bad as that.

In their day, Queen were as astounding as they were preposterous - but showmanship like Freddie Mercury's is rare. Meat Loaf could perhaps have replaced him; the guy from Free has no chance.
At best, this sounds like Queen with a lifeless stand-in where their heart should be. At worst, it's not even that, sounding like a third-rate ZZ Top or just anonymously dull stadium rock. Hard to pick the nadir of such a dire selection, but C-lebrity's galumphing satire particularly grates. Rating: 3/10

Cosmos Rocks gets a 1 Star review in The Observer

Disappointing review of The Cosmos Rocks in The Observer today.

Oh dear. Imagine Brian got his astrophysics PhD in '72, took that career path instead, and only formed a band now, aged 61. The result might be pub rock tosh with stadium reverb, Mud/'Quo boogie ('Cosmos Rockin"), anthemic mush ('Call Me'), and lyrics like 'I've got a pain in my memory'. What an astronomically bad parallel universe. Queen's star is dead.

Poor Review of The Cosmos Rocks from The London Times

The Cosmos Rocks

Rodgers, May and Taylor might sound like a law firm, but it's less misleading than Brian May and Roger Taylor passing off this sparkle-free set as Queen. Cosmos Rockin' sounds like boffins getting loose and the single C-lebrity is actually shallower than its subject. The daft Surf's Up School's Out, surely the cry of the Cornish educator, is better, as is the power ballad Say it's Not True. As slick pensioner blues-rock goes this is perfectly acceptable. But the odd Eastern scale aside, its charms rarely evoke the idiosyncratic sound of Queen. 2/5

Queen - 'C-lebrity' The average pub band could do better

First off, no argument, it must be hard being a guitarist or drummer in a band and having your singer die on you. Aside from losing a friend, the fact that they took your career with them has got to smart. Ever since Freddie Mercury's untimely death, Brian May and Roger Taylor have been desperately trying to find a future and much like their solo records and collaborations, "C-lebrity" isn't it.

With only two of the four original members, plus growling former Free frontman Paul Rogers, Trading Standards would probably have something to say about this qualifying as a Queen single, especially as its disjointed riffs, paper thin melody and painfully artless lyrics suggest it's the work of a band who've never actually heard a song, let alone written some of rock's classics. Secondly, having these three jaded has-beens preaching about c-listers' desperation for fame is, frankly, laughable. Hardly a worthy addition to the Queen canon, the average pub band could do better.

"The Cosmos Rocks"

Queen's first studio album in 13 years marks the graduation of former Free frontman Paul Rodgers to fully-fledged band member. Ever since joining Brian May and Roger Taylor on tour in 2005, he's been filling - with some style - the shoes of cherished frontman Freddie Mercury (who died in 1991). Now, even songwriting credits are shared between the trio.

At first, it all seems to be working handsomely. The title track sees them in full-tilt Tie Your Mother Down mode, Time to Shine has its soaring moments, and Still Burnin' stomps along with irresistible gusto.

But this bluesy, ballsy momentum soon fades with the drippy Small, the silly Warboys, and a general dearth of melodic zip.

And that, you suddenly recall, was the thing about Freddie: he sure knew how to whip up a tune. Ultimately, it's his Coward-esque charisma - both musical and personal - that's most missing from this occasionally inspired, impeccably played, but slightly leaden release.

Che male, ci chiediamo, potrebbe fare questa impresa così rischiosa sul patrimonio artistico dei Queen? O in verità, quale danno resta da fare? Ingiustamente offesi al loro apice – lo spirito e la volontà di correre rischi ed essere oltraggiosi, l’abilità di creare canzoni pop perfette e scivolare facilmente tra generi sconosciuti - l’opera dei Queen è stata rivalutata favorevolmente quando i membri restanti hanno dato libero sfogo a We Will Rock You, un musical che ha fatto i salti mortali per insinuare che i tentativi di rock degli anni ’70 sono ancora del tutto validi: abbiamo avuto un gruppo interessato esclusivamente al successo commerciale. Non è stata solo la pessima qualità dello spettacolo in sé. E’ stata la tremenda sfrontatezza: un musical dei Queen su come scioccare gruppi di ragazzi fabbricati da qualcuno, che hanno iniziato subito dopo che i restanti membri dei Queen avessero collaborato a una versione della canzone con una band fabbricata, i Five, e avessero festeggiato il 60° compleanno di Freddie Mercury portando sul palco un’altra band confezionata, i McFly, per suonare Don’t Stop Me Now. Qualsiasi cosa sia The Cosmos Rocks, probabilmente non può essere peggio di questo.

Definisce un suono più vicino ai Bad Company che a Bohemian Rhapsody, ma decorato con un po’ di stile alla Queen giusto per soddisfare i fan più accaniti. Gli assolo di Brian sono in multi-traccia all’infinito, le armonie vocali sono esagerate, Still Burnin’ si sforza di offrire la batteria di We Will Rock You. I motivi non sono eccezionali – la migliore, Small, é una sorta di “Radio 2” aggiornata, una ballata dei Free – ma non dà emozioni. I testi sono stupidaggini di vario tipo, banali – ci ricordano mille volte che il rock’n’roll non morirà mai, non é tutto oro quello che luccica, devi seguire i tuoi sogni – e stupidaggini allegoriche: “In un istante i misteri della vita saranno spiegati”, “promette Time To Shine un po’ imprudentemente. C’è una scemenza che un 59enne dovrebbe valutare meglio: “La scuola è fuori moda, ho uno stimolo criminale a contorcermi e gridare. C’è una fesseria proprio antiquata – oggi non si ascoltano mai canzoni dove si scommette che un uomo trovi se stesso sotto l’influsso della magia nera di una donna voodoo – e una su una sfumatura attuale. C-Lebrity imita i contestatori dei reality show: dopo aver inculcato We Will Rock You ai ragazzini, ci si aspetta che Kate Thornton annunci che la richiesta di un nuovo membro dei Queen è nei programmi del prossimo autunno.
Hanno sempre sottolineato che Rodgers non dovrebbe essere visto come un sostituto di Freddie Mercury, ma é difficile smettere di chiedersi cosa avrebbe fatto Mercury di tutta questa situazione. Le canzoni potrebbero essere meno terribili se fossero distribuite con una parte che sa bene, un’ampollosità che suggerisce un senso di ridicolo. Ma il repertorio di Paul Rodgers in commercio é una specie di realtà sofferta: non per nulla é il cantante preferito della PM di un tempo. Quando canta “Once I loved a butterfly, don't wonder how, don't ask me why” suona come se avesse letteralmente amato una farfalla, come uno di quei tizi che si vedono a tarda note sui documentary di Channel 4 che cercano di spiegare il loro intimo rapporto con un cavallo.

Si arriva alla suppurazione con Warboys: non, ahimè, un componimento hard-rock alla Huntingdonshire village, ma una canzone che esorta i soldati, che sembra sia personalmente responsabile dell’inizio delle guerre. E’ un po’ forte sulle forze armate. Anche il più implacabile oppositore delle seconda guerra del golfo presumibilmente accetta che i membri del quinto reggimento reale d’artiglieria non siano venuti con l’idea di attaccare l’Iraq di persona. “Sono così belli quando marciano e si addestrano” sbraita Rodgers, catturando l’ineffabile e passionale bellezza che é il marchio del soldato inglese comune, “E’ davvero una vergogna che si vestano per uccidere”.
Con un sacco di The Cosmos Rocks, ascoltiamo Warboys e sbalordiamoci che i Queen – uomini intelligenti di fama – non abbiano assolutamente notato che le parole siano stupide, banali, un po’ offensive e tendono ad avere un effetto scardinante sugli sforzi musicali che ci sono dietro. Forse sono dediti a minare il pubblico, proprio come ti sentiresti se dovessi guardare un marmaglia di gente che fa passare una roba di scarto come We Will Rock You. O forse il successo di We Will Rock You ha segnato nuovi standard senza grazia. Dopo tutto, per quanto The Cosmos Rocks sia brutto, non lo è mai come quello.

Nel loro giorno, I Queen sono stati tanto stupefacenti quanto assurdi – ma l’arte dello showman come quella di Freddie Mercury è rara. Forse Meat Loaf avrebbe potuto sostituito; il tipo dei Free non ha speranze. Nel migliore dei casi, suona come i Queen con un rimpiazzo senza vita al posto del loro cuore. Nel peggiore dei casi, neanche quello, sembra un ZZ Top di terza categoria o solo un noioso e anonimo rock da stadio. Difficile portare in alto questa orribile sezione, ma la satira galoppante di C-lebrity cigola. Voto: 3/10

La comune band da pub sapeva fare meglio

In primo luogo, nessuna discussione, deve essere difficile essere un chitarrista o un batterista di un gruppo e perdere il proprio cantante. A parte perdere un amico, il fatto che abbiano preso la tua carrier con loro deve far male. Dalla morte prematura di Freddie Mercury, Brian May e Roger Taylor hanno da sempre cercato disperatamente di trovare un futuro, soprattutto con i lavori solisti e collaborazioni varie, C-lebrity non lo é.
Con solo due dei quattro membri originali, più il frontman dei Free Paul Rodgers, Trading Standards avrebbe sicuramente qualcosa da dire riguardo questo qualificativo come singolo dei Queen, specialmente per i suoi motivi sconnessi, un foglio con melodie scarne e parole dolorosamente senza un’arte suggeriscono che è il lavoro di una band che non ha mai ascoltato veramente una canzone, che hanno solo scritto qualche classico rock.
In secondo luogo, avendo queste persone ormai sorpassate e sfinite che predicano sulla disperazione per la notorietà dei c-ascoltatori, francamente é ridicolo. Difficilmente si può agiungere qualcosa di degno al canone dei Queen, la comune band da pub sapeva fare meglio.

Secondo me non c'è una critica positiva perchè è impossibile fare il confronto con Freddie anche se continuano a chiamarsi Queen sono quasi una nuova formazione e sono diversi. Però continuano sempre a fare questo paragone Certo paragonati ai Queen originali non possono raggiungere quella grandezza perchè Freddie era spettacolare e unico! Adesso sono un'altra cosa nuova e diversa, un gruppo con dei grandi musicisti e un bravo cantante
