Artist : Froe Char
Label : Spielzeug Muzak
fossils / LP
Froe Char (aka Italian/Parisian Christina Lauro) is also known as half of the duo Illustration Sonore who has an amazing LP being released by the fantastic Medical Records label. There have been a pair of previous Froe Char releases of dark beautiful ambiance but with 'Fossils' she takes the distorted haze and murk of her prior work and uses it as a texture amid percolating synths and minimalist rhythms. 'Fossils' (released in a collaborative effort between Spielzeug Muzak & Modern Tapes labels) is the sultry minimal synth record for the experimental crowd or the noisy bleak record for the coldwave kids. I once heard someone say 'you can't dance to pain' but this record really proves otherwise !!

Artist : Merci La Nuit
Label : Spielzeug Muzak
untitled / 12"
French new-wave is definitly not dead! Here we don't talk about a music genre but an attitude, a position. From the begining in the 50's with the 'nouvelle vague', the aim is to find new forms beyond avant-garde and pop-culture to express true emotions, to show the diseases of the modern world and to challenge norms and obsolete social orders (like bourgeoisie, religion, work, art...). French new-wave is also a passion for wandering, a general tendency for detachment and it is, of course, the Diy spirit. We can find this kind of nonconformism and this common taste for wasted grounds in some movies of Claude Chabrol, Jacques Rivette or Luis Bunuel as well as in the music of Polyphonic Size, Guerre Froide and Merci La Nuit. With this 1st release on vinyl, this young musician from Saint-Etienne offers 6 minimal synth-pop songs filled with great sensibility, commit ment and a lot of bitter sweet humor. The music is very personal and digs up very different synth music eras, from the 80's raw analog sounds to the digital coldness of samples and techno kicks, to the more lo-fi minimal sounds. All those elements connected together are forming the sound of the nocturnal conspiracy of Merci La Nuit. So let's go for this night ballad through the city streets. It's a bit foggy tonight...

everything fades / LP
A wave band from Luxembourg you say? Where the hell is that? Indeed, even that small country of Europe contributed fine sounds to that movement known worldwide as new-wave. Elyzium For The Sleepless Souls, a classical singer/synths duo, were a short lived yet very talented band that quickly became a local legend. Brouillard Définitif presents us the album 'Everything Fades', originally a self-released tape from 1995, for the 1st time on vinyl. Limited to 300 copies on white vinyl !

figé dans le marbre... / LP
Even if beginning with the 90's and all of its trendy electro-gothic artifacts, Congrès De Vienne however sounded different; lineage with bands such as Vita Noctis or Neva comes to mind, the band managed to catch the spirit of early 80's wave bands. Quite anachronistic and deliberately confidential, they released a whole bunch of very limited tapes only known to a very limited few. Celebrating the 20 years of the band, Brouillard Définitif presents us today their 1st official release! Saison Froide, whose 1st release has been a tape back in 2001, is one of these bands that decided to carry on past decades' memory with influences such as Odessa, Brigade Internationale or Leitmotiv, to name a few. With this release, Saison Froide & Congrs De Vienne share the space to finally deliver a new milestone released in a limited edition of 300 copies on colored vinyl. Tip!!

Artist : Odessa
Label : Brouillard Definitif
untitled / 7"
After a CD anthology released few years ago, Odessa is back 30 years after its mythical 1st release, with 2 unreleased and unsuspected tracks taking us back to 1983. Despite a short and fast existence (no more than 3 years), few tracks (about 15 or so) and fewer gigs, with an official discography reduced to a mere 7" back in 1982, this French band quickly reached a cult aura that remained exhaustless, as testified by the ongoing generational process of painful hours that they inflict. Limited to 300 copies.

Artist : Police Des Moeurs
Label : Visage Musique
untitled / 7"
Police Des Moeurs may be Alphaville's greatest export since Lemmy Caution and Anna Karina. The duo intuitively know when to let sequencers speak for themselves, when to chime in, and when to command their drum machines to play another remorseless fill. Best experienced while observing brutalist architecture, a worn existential paperback in your pocket. Limited edition of 200 on white vinyl ;)

Artist : Brusque Twins / Kontravoid
Label : Visage Musique
split / 7"
3rd in a serie of 4 split 7" releases featuring a Visage Musique artist alongside a guest of their choice. For this installment, Montreal's Brusque Twins is pairing with Toronto's Kontravoid. Brusque Twins have been producing dark minimal synth music in the vein of bands like Linear Movement for some time now. Their latest endeavour is a more modern nod to the sublimely repetitious but infectiously danceable factory floor. In "Game Of Desire", Derek George's hypnotic groove is partnered beautifully with Hollie Hensman's airy, ethereal vocals increases that hypnotism ten-fold. Despite making music that sounds like the musings of teenage vampire bat that's crazy into Bauhaus, Kontravoid stoic grimness is quite human, which makes tracks like "Impurities" so unsettling. It starts up flickering like the electronics in an abandoned mall, and gets even more funereal, the bassy synths glugging away through muttering vocals and horrified choirs, like a tour of burnt-out night clubs that are somehow still being used. Despite the bleakness, it's hard not to dance ;)
