CatholicTV Will Air Vespers Service With Pope on Feast of Conversion of St. Paul

Catholic Online

WATERTOWN, MA (January 21, 2010) - On Monday, January 25, CatholicTV will air the Celebration of Vespers presided over by Pope Benedict XVI from the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome.

This Vespers service will air on CatholicTV cable outlets and on CatholicTV.com at 8PM and will be rebroadcast at noon the following day (all times Eastern).

This Vespers service takes place at the conclusion of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Each year the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and the Commission on Faith and Order of the World Council of Churches chooses a theme for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. This year, 2010, the theme is based on the biblical verse of Luke 24:48: You Are Witnesses of These Things. Honoring the Week of Prayer takes place between the feasts of Saints Peter and Paul. The week gives Christians an annual opportunity to continue to work towards unity which is already shared in Christ. It is also a time to gather in praise of the Triune God and to deepen the understanding of the ecumenical movement.

During the same feast in 2009, the Pope spoke of conversion in his homily saying, “one recognizes that this new journey cannot come from oneself. It consists in letting oneself be conquered by Christ. As St Paul says: "I am racing to grasp the prize if possible, since I have been grasped by Christ [Jesus]" (Phil 3: 12). Conversion demands our "yes", my "racing"; ultimately it is not my action, but a gift in letting myself be formed by Christ.”

CatholicTV regularly airs Papal and Vatican events: More information can be found at www.CatholicTV.com/shows/default.aspx?seriesID=57

Information about where to watch CatholicTV is available at www.CatholicTV.com/schedule/where-to-watch.aspx.

SAINT DAMIEN
EWTN To Feature Documentaries on
the Leper Priest and Genocide in Sudan

EWTN airs two fascinating documentaries this week along with a special Mass of Thanksgiving for the canonization of St. Damien of Molokai.

One might ask why Father Damien's congregation requested a Mass on Jan. 31, since this was not a significant date in the saint's life. It turns out that Jan. 31 is World Leprosy Day and the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary wants people to know that “leprosy is treatable, touchable and curable.”

The Mass will air at 2 p.m. ET from the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception and will be celebrated by the Most Rev. Pietro Sambi, Apostolic Nuncio to the U.S., with a homily by Rev. William Petrie from St. Damien's own congregation.

Most people know that this saint – who was canonized in October 2009 – was known as the “leper priest” because he ministered to those afflicted with this disease on the Hawaiian island of Molakai and that, as a result, he himself contracted and died of the disease..

Check Liturgical Celebrations

It is very likely that some of the liturgical celebrations listed on the Vatican website will be shown live on EWTN. Not all of these are in the EWTN schedule, so it's always a good idea to make notes from the Vatican website too.

The next Mass from Saint Peter's will be on this coming Thursday, 11 th February at 10.30 am Rome time.

I'm afraid I didn't know that the visit to Caritas was going to be shown on EWTN this morning - at 9 am GMT. Luckily, I switched on just as it was starting and was able to record it. Beautiful!!!!!!!!

We have a Holy Father who really cares about all people and hugs and kisses them. Anyone [not among our members, of course!] who still thinks he's a distant, scholarly professor out of touch with reality, should be made to watch this.

He's so holy! [It was a nightmare for Domenico Giani and his colleagues, though! Well done, Domenico!!!!]

LUTHERAN CHURCH VISIT
I know this is taking place on Sunday afternoon, but I can't find out what time it is - not anywhere on the internet. I'm sure it will be shown live on EWTN and may be on the other stations that members can get - KTO etc. Keep your eyes open for it!

I don't know what form the service will take, but both the Lutheran pastor and the Holy Father will give sermons.

HOLY WEEK BEGINS
Good news, benefan! People who don't have EWTN [or similar] will now be able to watch the great liturgies of Holy Week online. I love the idea of e-cards, too.

Don't forget the Mass this evening for the fifth anniversary of John Paul's death: 18.00 Rome time.

MALTA
Papa's pilgrimage to Malta is being covered in full by EWTN. Tonight we saw the arrival and greeting - or at least, some people did. I missed it, because I was still out at a celebration lunch, but it couldn't be helped. Later I did see the visit to Saint Paul's grotto/cave - that was absolutely splendid!!!! Papa is being greeted in Malta by a populace that is solidly Catholic.

Tomorrow's events start with Holy Mass, which commences at 9 am British Summer Time, 4 am Eastern US time.

Flo: Oh dear, I noticed it too! Our beloved Papa! He'd just spent the night in an unfamiliar bed, after travelling to Malta and then visiting the grotto of Saint Paul. This showed us that he's human - as if we didn't already know. Well done to our trusty Monsignor Marini!!!

I suggest a fan club to encompass these people:
Georg Gaenswein
Guido Marini
Domenico Giani and , last but definitely not least,
Doctor Patrizio Polisca

If Papa can't have us there to care for him, at least he has those men.

Hey - wonder where Simone and Horst were!!!!??????

Thank you, dear EWTN!!!!!
Thank you to my favourite television channel for its live coverage of the beautifully holy Solemn Pontifical Mass in the Extraordinary form from the National Shrine in Washington DC. It started at about 6 pm BST. The celebrant was the bishop of Tulsa, Oklahoma. His homily was out of this world! I trust EWTN will publish it on their website.

JUNE 20TH AND 29TH
Next Masses from Saint Peter's are next Sunday, June 20th and the important Pallium Mass on the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, June 29th.

The latter is also the FIFTY NINTH ANNIVERSARY of our Papa's priestly ordination and that of his brother, Monsignor Georg.

INTRODUCING FATHER RICHARD KUNST
http://www.papalartifacts.com/

Above is a link to a new website created by Father Richard Kunst, who is a collector of very, very important relics. He has, for example, the breviary that belonged to Saint John Vianney [second class relic] and has papal seals and complete papal bulls going right back to Mediaeval times.
And, guess what, he has a Mass card commemorating our own Holy Father's ordination in 1951. We have a photo of it on the forum somewhere, but he owns the real thing!
He doesn't do this for fun, though. He is the vocations director for the Diocese of Duluth and uses his collection as an educational tool.

How did I find out about Father Kunst? He was Father Mitch Pacwa's guest tonight on "EWTN Live" - one of the most exciting programmes n EWTN. Tonight's programme was particularly enthralling. He talked about all sorts of papal customs, the most interesting to me being the tradition of "swapping" zucchettos - if you buy the Pope a new one and hand it to him, he'll give you the one he's wearing. He said that JPII did not keep this tradition, but Benedict has revived it. I'm sure we've seen it happen at a General Audience.

Fr Kunst explained why popes wear white: Pius V started the custom, because he was a Dominican and didn't want to change the colour of his cassock after he was elected pope. Father Mitch then pondered why popes wear red shoes and he didn't know the answer, neither did Fr Kunst. They did say that John Paul II wore brown shoes. But, I think popes should wear red shoes [or slippers, as they used to do when they didn't have to do much walking outdoors] to signify the Passion and death of Christ. Am I right?

I've become very interested in the history of the papacy myself, but so far have only read a small number of biographies. Frankly, I'm too interested in Benedict XVI to have much time for earlier popes!!!!!!

Do hope you'll go to the website I linked at that you'll follow its progress. It's only been going for a short time.

An exhibition of some of the items in Fr Richard Kunst's collection.
