Hi dudes,
As promised some topics agò I had an intuition (don't know why those things always happens on the W.C. or in the bed at night) that helped me in finding out a way to flash the screen during a game.

I cannot test it with a gun right now so please try it out and let me know. I think I am on the right way.

file is donwloadable from : xoomer.virgilio.it/smogdragon/files/GunCon2Flasher.zip

Re:

Greetings!

I have just concluded my first basic test of the flasher program. So far, nothing flashes with it. I tried shooting on the desktop, in MAME, and HOTD2. Also, it crashes 50% of the time starting it and 100% of the time closing it. Hope some of that was helpful!

The computer tested on by the way:

Pent 4 2.8
Geforce 4 4200
XP SP1

Any further instructions on what I should do in order for it to work?

Really ? To me it never crashed and it flashes. I must try it with the gun, 'cause i teted it just with the mouse.
After testing I made some other modifications to make the screen flash only with the gun (no more mouse-flashing). Maybe something went wrong with this mods, but I cann't test it from here ... I have no gun at the office.

P.S.:
You should update to SP2 ... the GunCon2Mouse driver does not work with SP1.

Written by: Acorns
SP2 breaks to many things - I don't like having to jump through hoops to be able to run chankast, a glide wrapper, etc etc. However, I do have a computer with SP2 installed, I'll pop in a video card with TV-out and test that way later. Could you re-enable the mouse version for testing? And/or does your driver send a dwExtraInfo in the mouse events to notify that the shot was fired from the gun?

The driver seems to work with SP1 fine btw for me - although I remember vaguely something about a crash on exit problem that your config panel had as well, with some sp.

From the last thread, when this one was an announcement.

Well, this one has made progress!

Tested again: on the desktop, in mame, and in HOTD2. On the desktop, when I fire, the screen is drawn and stays white, until I cause it to refresh somehow (moving the mouse, opening a window, etc). In mame, nothing. In HOTD2, nothing. I like the new about screen where you expect exit to be hehe [SM=g27990]

Very strange, it worked to me. I can confirm that in desktop flashing you will end up in having a white dekstop. This does not happen in gamma-flashing mode (I set this as default mode).

Download the new version at the same address. Tested in MAME and it works.

Redownloaded!

In "gamma mode" it works normally, bit long on the flash though. Still can't get it to flash white though!

Edit: Tried it in HOTD2 - I'd been testing mame and desktop before. In HOTD2 it now "flashes" white! When I press the trigger, the screen seems to alternate one frame while, one frame HOTD2, for about 5 seconds - all done after I release the gun button.

Edit2: Just noticed! The program no longer crashes on exit, either.

Thanks vibez. It's a pity you cannot see the gamma-flash because it really ROCKS!!!!. I will try to fix it and include this flasher in the next package of the driver with all the feature related.
In next days (before releasing it) i will continue to update that zip and tell you whne a new test-prog is out. You will tell me when the program is good enough to put it in the download section.

acorn are you saying that for you is just the contrary ? You can see the gamma-flash but not the white flash ? [SM=g27987] informatic misteries ... [SM=g27987] let's work it out [SM=g27987]

Gamma works for me just fine. White flash turns the screen white and stays that way till I open another window. Cant think of any suggestions as you are doing a great job on this driver. Keep up the good work[SM=g27987]

This is how the new cpl will look :

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Do I miss any option ?

@Vibez : I noticed that a too low gamma does not work with some system ... you will be able to lower the gamma using the cpl.
I've raised it by hand a little bit. Try to download it again.

Smog. Gamma works in some games. HOTD Virtuacop etc.... but it doesnt work in MAME or on the desktop. Note that the -fsb option in mame never worked for me either. I think its because my card only allows gamma changing when the game unlocks it? I'm not sure. But it would definatly seem to be hardware dependant. But I must say gamma looks good when it does work.

Another thing you might be able o help with. I have some shooting games that use full motion video mpeg1 (Mad Dog) Unfortunatly the white flash just paints the screen white & it stays like that. Gamma also doesnt work on these games either [SM=g27992]

I'm using an arcadevga which is based on a radeon 9200

I have other ways to simulate the gamma raising with the white flash ... the problem is that I think they are to heavy to use. I surely will let you make some test on it.

The principle is that I can write a transparent white screen instead of the full-white flash ... to do that the application must do some calculations that could result in a dalayed frame-display. I am not sure the effect would be good, but we can try.

About mad dog : I will investigate, it does not seem so hard to fix.

Cheers Smog. Did you get chance to have a look at the problem with my gun that Acorns noticed here?

www.freeforumzone.com/viewmessaggi.aspx?f=66424&idd=54

EDIT: A nice feature would be the abilty to switch between Gamma/Flash Mode via a button on the gun. Similar to the way we can switch 'shoot off screen' on & off
