No regrets...

im thankful we have this choyful and colorful forum where we can look at and share all his glorious pics!

Yes Gracelp and Benefan, I'm very thankful for this forum as well as to Ratzigirl and our Italian friends who have welcomed us and helped us feel at home. I'm thankful that each of us has made the decision to have dual citizenship so we can, as Teresa says, spread the joy on both forums.
Wulfrune, as Benefan has said you must not blame yourself for what has happened on the RFC. [SM=x40800]
On a happier [SM=x40799] note. We have another year to look forward to... [SM=x40801] [SM=x40801] [SM=x40801] [SM=x40801]

CHRISTMAS EVE SURPRISE FROM PAPA
Pope Benedict appeared briefly this evening at his study window to light a candle for peace
during a ceremony at St. Peter's Square to inaugurate this year's Vatican creche.
Assisted by Mons. Gaenswein, the Pope lit a candle from a long match, held it high with his right hand,
before using it to give a blessing. The lights then went off in the study and for a moment,
the Pope was lit only by the candle.

VATICAN CRECHE UNVEILED
Thanks to Sylvie, who already has this photomontage of the creche ceremony and Papa's participation:

Every year since 1984, at John-Paul II's initiative, a contest is held among Vatican employees
for a new version of the Nativity scene. The winning design is then set up on the Square,
occupying some 4000 square feet, with larger than life-size figures.

The tradition of recreating the Nativity scene is attributed to St. Francis of Assissi,
who did it first in Greccio in 1223 and celebrated Mass in that unusual setting.

PAPA'S FIRST MIDNIGHT MASS AS POPE
A sampler from Sylvie's first montage using Yahoo photos. She says we will probably be blown away when the Photogallery photos come in because their photographers have just been getting more inspired with each occasion.

This was the best Midnight Mass - certainly the best Christmas homily, and best-delivered too - and the most spiritually uplifting Mass, in my experience. Yet another reason to thank the Lord for our Pope. The music, the liturgy, the flowers, Papa's every gesture (so reverential, so right, so exquisite), the way he enunciated every prayer whether in Latin or Italian, whether chanted or spoken, and the perfect way he delivered the homily, had me in tears all the time. I've never heard him speak more beautifully - intonation, pitch, pacing, cadence, rhythm, emphasis all enhanced his message a hundredfold. And I am waiting for a photograph that captured his expression just after the last of the children had presented their offerings to him - it was a moment of ineffable beauty. (I haven't even mentioned the hair!)

Whooooooooosh............orbit again!!!!!
Yes, indeed..........what a wonderful, spiritual Midnight Mass! Papa excelled himself with his homily and..........oh he looked so superbly magnificent that I'm afraid I'm once more in orbit!
I love the new chasuble - fish design. We have bees, now we have fish.
And the hair! Oh boy, it was better than ever last night.
Sylvie - thanks for another lovely montage.
Buon Natale a tutti voi!

gRA(T)Zie 1000!!!!! for the Midnight Mass photos! I’m moved , as always, by Papas clarity when he speaks. It was a beautiful Mass.

Today Papa delivered his first Christmas Day Urbi et Orbi message.
Among several languages, he offered greetings in Swedish when he said: GOD JUL (and excellent pronounced, too!) .
We use the same greeting in Norwegian : GOD JUL - Liebe Papa !!!!! [SM=x40801] [SM=x40801] [SM=x40801]
…..and GOD JUL to all of you . I wish you all a blessed and joyous Christmas time! [SM=x40791] [SM=x40791] [SM=x40791]

PAPA'S FIRST CHRISTMAS "URBI ET ORBI" MESSAGE
Once again, from Sylvie's efficiently prompt montage of the Loggia photos today, courtesy of Yahoo:

It brings memories of April 19 flooding back, of course! But, even apart from the different vestments
(someone must explain the belted garment under the gold chasuble - another item
we are seeing for the first time, I think),Papa's look on April 19 was truly unique.
As adorable and gorgeous as his subsequent photographs have been, I choose any photo
of his taken on April 19, 2005,
as photo of the year, as I did in the forum poll. (Don't forget to vote your favorite in the poll,
by the way - you have till Dec.31. On the thread SONDAGGI-"Grande Concorso...")

CTV, for a change, had their microphones picking up crowd sounds appreciably in the Piazza today,
and I heard a chant I have not heard before, but maybe those who have been in St. Peter's
these past 8 months may have - "We love you, Pope- we love you!" (

P.S. As a Filipina, I am so happy Papa said a greeting in Filipino today, just as he did
in Marienfeld last August.)

MIDNIGHT MASS REPLAY; ANGELUS TOMORROW
Grace - I think EWTN is replaying the Midnight Mass at 6-8 p.m. tonight (Eastern time).

Also, Papa will lead the Angelus tomorrow noon, Monday, according to Vatican Radio.
CTV will carry it.

Natale con Papa
What wonderful pictures of our wonderful Papa.

I was so lucky to watch the midnight mass on TV just after returning from our Christmas mass. Although I was really tired I didn't want to miss a second.

On German TV they said there were 100.000 people at St. Peter's Square yesterday for the Angelus waiting for hours in the rain!!! The biggest group yesterday were obviously the spanish speaking people. I really love it when they sing and shout "Benedetto". And the pictures with the candles are unbelievable. [SM=x40802]w

Papa’s look
I agree, Teresa. Papa’s look at the April 19 was unique and we love it!
He’s adorable when dealing with children, as well. Photos from the Midnight Mass at Christmas Eve:

At the end of the blessing, two of the kids did not know exactly where to go, so Papa discretely pointed out the direction to them……he was so……ummmmm [SM=x40792] ……and cute [SM=x40792] . What a start in life for those kids!!! [SM=g27811]
More beautiful photos from the Midnight Mass “upstairs” ( Photo da Papa).

WHITE AS ERMINE
With apologies to our anti-camauro sisters (after all, Papa is taking off the cap here),
this picture unearthed by Ratzigirl is just too good to pass - Papa's hair is as white
as the ermine on the cap!

And so, I will re-post here Fr. Jim Tucker's (Dappled Things blog) Christmas-Day tidbit about ermine,
which I posted on CHATTER yesterday:
--------------------------------------------------------------

The Symbolism of Ermine: "Death Before Defilement" --
Ermine has been in the news lately, what with Papa Ratzinger's good taste in clothing.
Here is (an excerpt from) a really interesting Christmas essay
on ermine as a traditional symbol of purity.

"... Because of its pure white fur the ermine became a symbol of moral purity and innocence.
Even more marvelous, the medieval bestiary tells us, is that the ermine, with its beautiful white coat,
would rather die before soiling its fur. According to Aelian, the ermine, falling into a mud puddle,
would immediately die of sorrow...."

--------------------------------------------------------------

LUTHERANGUEST - Thanks for giving us all the heartwarming kiddie pictures.
I can never have enough of them!

RATZI WRITES A CIRCUS OWNER
I don't know how Ratzigirl came across a website for Merz-Pilini, a circus-and-variety
enterprise based in Duesseldorf, but the site has this interesting letter written
by Ratzi on March 17, 2005 (a month and 2 days before he became Pope) as well as a picture
of Ratzi with two boys, who are presumably members of the family of Thomas Merz
(sons? grandsons?), to whom the letter is addressed.

The letter is quite informal and employes the Du-form of address (second person informal). It says -

Dear Thomas!
It was with surprise as well as joy that this time I heard from you, not only indirectly
through your aunt, but from you yourself. You have chosen an extraordinarly occupation
to follow in which you have succeeded, inspite of the difficult times, giving joy to many people.

I wish that you will continue to be successful and send you my Easter blessing.

Your
Joseph Card. Ratzinger
