I think we should have a "Guess the date" competition on this one. If it was taken in Graz it could have been when he went there to give the lectures that became "Daughter Zion". No, sorry that was Puchberg bei Linz - just checked the introduction - and it was in 1973. The introduction is signed in 1977, when he was fifty.

I would guess he was no more than forty five [see the already heart-stopping 1972 photo taken near Bogota]. His hair is beginning to go grey. He looked like a small boy [when his photo was taken with other men], right up until he was made Archbishop of Munich/Freising in early 1977.

Any more views about this?

WOW!!!

What a great way to start off the week! Thanks, Flo. I love that pic with the chubby little baby. Looks a bit like my granddaughter.

A few of Spaziani's masterpieces of recent days

This last one - [SM=x40798] - makes you wax poetic!

Nobody captures Papa's sweet face half as perfectly as Spaziani does. I know I'm repeating myself there, but he should be made official papal photographer number one!

Spaziani is the only photographer to capture the many expressions and emotions of our wonderful Papa! Thank you, benevolens, for this selection.

The last photo has made me sad. He is looking older and that nasty "thing" under his right eye is more evident. When I first noticed Joseph Ratzinger in April 2005, I described him to myself as "magnificent", despite his small stature. It was the amazing white hair and the expression of tenderness. But now that's been replaced by something else: the deeply intellectual look is still there, but now accompanied by a sort of peace....almost resignation. But I love him still!!!!! And I always will!!!!!!

Mary!

Sorry, I must CLEARLY object to your statement about resignation.

Surely he has changed since April 2005 - as we all have!
However, I'd describe it more as a transformation into visible saintlyness, serenity, grace, infinite patience and gentleness.

Then, he still looks a little boy so much - for instance on the second pic from the top of those fantastic Spaziani pictures.

No matter how many set-backs and witch hunts he has been subjected to - he manages to retain his inner radiance, which is clearly visible on the outside.
Even when he might look strained and rushed, occasionally.

If I was in his position, I had bags under my eyes the size of North America.

@cowgirl: I really meant he's "resigned to the way things are" in a calm way. I didn't mean he looked "tired and fed up", which is what you may have thought. Could be a subtle difference of meaning in our two languages.

He does have a swelling under and beside his right eye, which bothers me. But, as I've said elsewhere and about other things, there is nothing we can do. In the case of medical matters we must leave it all to Dr Polisca.

I'm often amused when I glance at other forums/blogs and see interfering, silly women suggesting this that and the other, as if they have some hotline to the Vatican. I suppose the worst one recently was the suggestion that Papa should "re-locate" Monsignor Georg Gaenswein!!! What a hoot! And then there's the business of his liturgical garments which, oh dearie me!, are chosen by Mons. Guido Marini. It all makes me laugh.

Yes, I agree that Papa often looks like a little boy and I think back to the teddy bear story.

Benevolens,

Thanks for all the Spaziani pics. They are beautiful as always. I would have commented sooner except I was stunned into speechlessness for days.

Which one?

Thanks for posting this photo, Flo. I see the four women seated together right behind Papa and I recognize the one farthest from the aisle but which one is the new member of the papal household? I've never seen a photo of her face.

I think  she is the second from the aisle, blond hair and taller, because I recognize the three others.
