RENTAL, ROBERT Different Voices For You. Different Colours For Me. CD
"Robert Rental was a British pioneer of the post-punk DIY industrial electronic music scene in the United Kingdom. Originally from Port Glasgow, Scotland, he moved to the south of England with Thomas Leer in the late 1970s, and became involved with the local music scene. Robert Rental however released very little of his solo music, preferring to collaborate with Thomas Leer, as well as with Daniel Miller. The only solo recording from the 1970s is the 7" single 'Paralysis' first released on the homemade Regular Records, then re-released on Company Records in 1978. On an unassuming cassette, just labelled 'Robert Rental' in green Dymo tape, these demos have lain unheard for years amongst his family's treasured possessions, cared-for artefacts of a life cut short far too soon. These demos, which Robert recorded in his council flat at Macey House, Battersea in 1980, provide an enticing glimpse into his all-too-infrequent solo work. On most occasions, Robert worked with Thomas Leer, Daniel Miller or other collaborators. These are rough recordings, tape hiss still in evidence, but his creativity shines through the murk, like uncut diamonds. We know 2 of these tracks from their later re-recording for the Mute Records single 'Double Heart' late in 1980. Robert spoke to friends of his frustration at being unable to replicate his sound in a commercial studio -- it was these demos' sound that he wanted to recreate. Sometimes having only access to the most rudimentary of equipment can hone the creative talent into something sharper and more focused -- necessity is the mother of invention, indeed."

BOURBONESE QUALK Hope CD
"Bourbonese Qualk were an experimental music group from England who were active from 1979 until 2003. The group were always obsessively and uncompromisingly focused on controlling their work -- they ran their own record label, recording studio, tour organisation and music venue (the legendary 'Ambulance Station') -- they refused to integrate into the commercial music racket turning down publishing deals from major labels -- stubbornly opting for total independence. Bourbonese Qualk were also known for their political activism which was formed in the crucible of the 1980s Britain: The Miner's Strike, Falklands/Malvinas war, Anti-fascism, Thatcherism, Moneterism, squatting/housing, local government corruption, anti-capitalism, and Anarchism -- which was further re-enforced by touring Europe and meeting like-minded groups and organisations. They saw their music as a revolutionary cultural force -- a belief that radical musical forms must be part of positive social change. Despite this position, the group avoided dogma, cliché and propaganda, preferring to let their audience come to their own conclusions -- their work was often ambiguous and directly critical of cynical power-politics of any colour -- often irritating members of the traditional 'organised left'. They never recorded in a 'proper' studio, choosing instead to work with their own extremely basic equipment (at a time when home studios were very unusual -- the unique raw sound of these recordings is the result of their choice -- which now, ironically, is in vogue due perhaps to the overwhelming obliquity of 'clean' audio digital production tools. If Bourbonese Qualk have a legacy, it is that 'culture' should be reclaimed, re-defined and owned by the people, wherever they are, however small and not by the state or the market and that 'culture' is a vital vehicle for debate and radical change. Hope was the group's second long player, released on their own Recloose Organisation label in 1984."

ZERO KAMA - Zero Kama 3xCD Box €29,90 (INFINITE FOG)

Zero Kama was an experimental music project founded by Zoe DeWitt in 1983.
The first release of Zero Kama was the title V.V.V.V.V., recorded for the Nekrophile Rekords cassette compilation The Beast 666.
In 1984 followed the cassette release of the album The Secret Eye of L.A.Y.L.A.H., which is commonly regarded as one of the key albums of the industrial-subgenre 'ritual'.
The fact that all instruments used for this recording were exclusively made from human bones and skulls, its elusive musical style, the implied occult symbolism as well as the short-time existence of Zero Kama, whose backgrounds remained unknown for a long time, have been contributing to the cult status of this project until now.
Following an invitation of the NL-Centrum Amsterdam, Zero Kama played two live concerts in the Netherlands in 1985, and - after two more releases on the Nekrophile compilation The Archangels of Sex Rule the Destruction of the Regime - completely withdrew from the public.
While The Secret Eye of L.A.Y.L.A.H. was recorded solely by Zoe DeWitt, the later live performances were realized with befriended musicians such as Didi Neidhart and Muki Pakesch, whom Zoe DeWitt knew from the Austrian music underground of the 1980s.
Since that time there have been a couple of re-releases of Zero Kama recordings, amongst others the 1988 Vinyl version by the French label Permis de Construire, followed by the CD release in 1991.
In 2001 the French label Athanor published The Goatherd and the Beast, a 10" vinyl containing tracks from various compilations that were recorded besides The Secret Eye of L.A.Y.L.A.H..
This collection was also included as a bonus CD in the Live in Armhem double CD release by Athanor in 2008.
In 2014 Athanor finally published a remastered version of The Secret Eye of L.A.Y.L.A.H. as both vinyl and CD.

LAPRE Banzai: Elektronische Musik aus Berlin 1985/87 CD
"Rudolf Langer (formerly of Tyndall) and Peter Preuß teamed up to create Lapre as a vehicle for their adventures in sonic experimentation. They set about capturing their nocturnal rehearsal room sessions on tape, Langer on synthesizer and Preuß on guitar. With the exception of a solitary single and a few extremely limited cassette runs, Lapre released no further material during their active phase. It was not until 2018 that their works became accessible to a wider audience, when Bureau B released the Auferstehung retrospective (BB 302CD/LP), drawing on tracks from 1983 to 1984. Banzai, the second collection of Lapre recordings, follows up by concentrating on their creative output from the years 1985 to 1987. The eponymous centerpiece of the album, 'Banzai I', first appeared on a 1987 sampler issued by Pirol -- its inclusion on Berliner Elektroniknacht caused quite a stir amongst connoisseurs, with the disc changing hands as a sough-after rarity. Here, the track is accompanied by five previously undiscovered gems from the Lapre archives. Banzai documents the duo's impressive latter phase, moving on from their earlier cosmic collages into an altogether more playful state of mind. Light streams through synthesizer compositions suspended in reverie, driven forwards by rugged drum machine beats as Peter Preuß weaves shimmering guitars into the mix. The needle on the dial sweeps from abstract rapture to exuberant pop in an instant. A well-kept secret at the time of its inception, this music was barely audible beyond the borders of Berlin's underground scene. It thus gives us great pleasure to give these tracks the attention they ultimately deserve, more than 30 years later." --Daniel Jahn, January 2020

T.S.O.L. Beneath The Shadows LP
"The second in a series of classic vinyl reissues featuring original artwork painstakingly restored and hot-stamped with gold foiling. Beneath The Shadows is the second studio album by the American hardcore punk band T.S.O.L. (True Sounds of Liberty), released in 1982 through Alternative Tentacles. With the addition of keyboardist Greg Kuehn to the lineup, the band moved away from punk rock in favor of a gothic rock sound in the vein of The Damned and Siouxsie and the Banshees. Although the album was critically well received, it was all too much for their hardcore punk fans at the time, and after an appearance playing live in Penelope Spheeris' 1984 film Suburbia, founding members Jack Grisham and Todd Barnes left the band and for the classic line-up it was all over until they reunited 16 years later.

O YUKI CONJUGATE Peyote LP
One of the all-time fantastic masterpieces of rhythmic ambient, an absolute must-own for any fan of the genre. Peyote is a musical trip well worth taking. Originally released in 1991 on CD and now released on vinyl for the first time. O Yuki Conjugate (OYC) are an English post-industrial/ambient musical group founded in 1982 in Nottingham by Roger Horberry and Andrew Hulme and still -- intermittently -- active today. Originally inspired by the spirit and sound of post-punk, they soon started pioneering their own brand of ambient at a time (early '80s) when few people were interested in such a low-key approach. Their music has been variously described as "ambient", "fourth world", and "dark wave"; the band prefer to call it "dirty ambient".

BOMIS PRENDIN Clear Memory CD
Mental Experience present the first ever reissue of Bomis Prendin's Clear Memory, originally released in 1984. Formed in 1978, Bomis Prendin is a collective of experimental "noisicians" from Washington DC, pioneers within the DIY, Industrial, cassette culture, and experimental electronics scene. Using cassette recorders, mutated musical toys, electric guitars, bass, rewired circuitry, analog pedal effects, and cheap keyboards, they recorded and released in the late '70s a couple of astounding flexi-discs (Test and Phantom Limb) which led to them being included on the infamous Nurse With Wound list. Clear Memory was originally released in 1984 only on cassette (50 copies) and it's an incredible example of DIY mutant psychedelic pop and homemade electronic weirdness which sounds years ahead of its time. "Clear Memoryreveals a wonderland of sense-expanding psychedelic potentiality lurking below the surface." --Mutant Sounds "Their music features an incredible variety of sounds, images and structures that places it somewhere between slightly mutated rock and roll and pure experimental composition." --Gary Indiana (Modern World) RIYL: Residents, Chrome, Cabaret Voltaire, Faust, Throbbing Gristle, Cluster, Olivia Tremor Control... Master tape sound. Four-page insert with liner notes by Klemen Breznikar (It's Psychedelic, Baby). CD version includes one bonus track.

COREY, GILES Hinterkaifeck LP
"Giles Corey is the gloomy, stripped-down solo project of Dan Barrett, one of the masterminds behind the cult act Have A Nice Life. Dealing with issues like suicide, depression, and the paranormal, Giles Corey is both incredibly bleak and intimate. Two years after the project's self-titled debut, Barrett recorded three minimalist tracks before a series of live performances, releasing them as Hinterkaifeck. Hinterkaifeck was released in February 2013 by Enemies List Home Recordings, and has existed exclusively as a digital release until now. The title is a reference to a gruesome and mysterious mass murder that took place on a remote farm in 1922 near Munich, Germany. The Flenser presents Giles Corey's Hinterkaifeck as a one-sided 12-inch record with a special etching on the b-side."

GROUP A anOther LP
Japanese industrial/avant-garde synth duo group A partner with choreographer/performer Dana Gingras and Montréal media artist Sonya Stefan as well as Finnish lighting designer Mikko Hynninen for anOther, the multimedia project developed and premiered at Agora de la danse, Montréal, April 2018. Performance, installation of televisions, sound, light, and image converging to create an exhilarating event placing a living, breathing and transmuting body at the heart of the experience. "A hybrid of art installation and electroacoustic performance, anOther transports us into a post-feminine fourth dimension, whose atmosphere is as enticing as it is paradoxically unsettling. This jewel of experimental choreography will thrill visual art and underground music aficionados." --Mélanie Carpentier, Le Devoir. Solid red vinyl; edition of 400.

L-SEVEN L-Seven LP
"L-Seven were a short-lived but foundational post-punk band from Detroit, MI. Active between 1980-83, L-Seven only ever officially released one 7" on Touch And Go's Special Forces, a division of Touch And Go Records designated for releases that were not just straight-ahead punk and hardcore, the L-Seven 7'' was the only Special Forces release. L-Seven was formed by members of The Blind, Retro and Algebra Mothers and fiery singer Larissa Stolarchuk and are not to be confused with the similarly named LA grunge group L7 who would form a decade afterward. Following the demise of L-Seven, Larissa (now going by Larissa Strickland), while still donning her bleached blonde hair and tattered floral sundress with combat boots, would put down the mic and pick up a guitar and form the seminal Laughing Hyenas with her partner in (life of) crime John Brannon. During their time together L-Seven was loved and respected by all of the Detroit punk and hardcore bands. Larissa was the surrogate den mother to the hardcore scene and although L-Seven's sound was far from hardcore, their DIY attitude and willingness to bring art into their music was hugely inspiring and influencial to the 'Freezer Theater' crew. They shared stages with Negative Approach, Necros, Meatmen and all of the midwest superstars as well as many legendary touring artists. L-Seven opened for Iggy, The Birthday Party, Bush Tetras, did a small tour with Gun Club and even played U2's first ever Detroit show (proof of this is included on this LP). Third Man Records is beyond proud to be releasing an LP of unreleased studio and live recordings. It has been our honor to work closely with longtime fan and almost-member Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, all surviving L-Seven members as well as a few other folks from the L-Seven scene. Sadly, Larissa passed away in 2006, but her presence is missed and this record is dedicated to her. The limited colored vinyl exclusive LP includes a bonus 4 song 7" -- three studio tracks and one live, very raw version of L-Seven and John Brannon covering 'You Drive Me Nervous' by Alice Cooper."

IMPLOSION Implosion CD
Trading Places present a reissue of Implosion's self-titled album, originally released in 1988. Obscure yet outstanding '80s Italian outfit that combined, space rock, psychedelia, and proto-electronics. The epitome of a "cult" album whose original copies sell for over 300 euros on the internet. Consisting of long, spacey, dreamy, mostly-instrumental tracks made of killer, acid-leaking electronics, and released in a mere 500 copies in 1988, this monster-rare album is now on CD for the first time ever. Limited edition including three bonus tracks and a 16-page booklet featuring lyrics and liner notes

LOGIC SYSTEM Venus CD
Wewantsounds reissue Logic System's Venus, originally released in 1981. Reissued outside of Japan for the first time in 40 years. Hideki Matsutake started his career as the assistant of Japanese electronic music master Isao Tomita in the early '70s, he went on to work with Ryuichi Sakamoto and then Yellow Magic Orchestra as their keyboard programmer and unofficial fourth member. In 1981 he started his own Logic System project recording Venus that year in Los Angeles with Don Grusin, Nathan East, and Michael Boddicker, brilliantly mixing synth funk, ambient, and boogie with a touch of fusion jazz predating vaporwave by a mere 30 years. While the first album, Logic had a harder techno feel, the second one, Venus, was different affair. Recorded in Los Angeles at the new state of the art Yamaha Studio, it was loosely themed on the Greek goddess Venus and had a funkier more organic sound. For the album, Matsutake had asked a handful of American musicians to provide songs he would then add his synth magic touch to. The updated sound was achieved by switching from the Moog III to the E-mu modular System (which Matsutake brought over to LA) and other synths like the Prophet 5, the Roland MC-8 and TR 808, and the Yamaha GS-1, a forerunner of the DX7. The result is an amazing futuristic mix of electronic music and early '80s funk, announcing many genres to come, from techno and house to French electro and vaporwave. From the breezy ambient synth of "I Love You" to the city pop edge of "Be Yourself" (originally written by Nathan East for Debra Laws) and the vocoder-led Daft Punk-ish "Take A Chance", Venus is a fascinating album that both pushes the boundaries of electronic music and is yet strangely accessible and beautiful. The other key elements of Venus is the artwork designed by legendary Japanese illustrator Pater Sato. Sato had started in Japan in the early '70s doing many album covers for Japanese artists, including Tatsuro Yamashita's cult Spacy LP (1977) before moving to New York in 1979 to pursue a career in fashion and advertising. His airbrush style became hugely influential over the years. The original album came with a beautiful eight-panel insert illustrated by Sato which Wewantsounds has reproduced. Also includes obi strip and a second insert featuring credits and line-up, plus liner notes by Hashim Kotaro Bharoocha with an exclusive interview of Hideki Matsutake. Remastered from the original tapes.

VA Cold Waves of Color Vol. 6 LP
"The highly anticipated sixth volume of the well-received electronic compilation series of tracks drawn from the vaults of the Color Tapes label. As with the other volumes you can find great examples of cold wave, minimal wave, and synth electronics made by obscure British bands in the 1980s such as: Berserk In A Hayfield, Lives of Angels, Silicon Valley, Modern Art, Disintegrators, Echophase, The Lord, and Mystery Plane. As with all of the other volumes, this is a co-production between Lion Productions and Color Tapes."

VA Sowas Von Egal 2: German Synth Wave Underground 1981-1984 CD
Two years have passed since Bureau B released the first Sowas Von Egal compilation (BB 310CD/LP, 2018). With the musical movement or genre known as NDW celebrating its 40th anniversary, what better time than now to launch an ambitious successor to the first sampler. The beating heart of this endeavor is once again invigorated by the synchronous passions of bespoke Hamburg label Bureau B and the label's Damaged Goods nights where they present rare, obscure synth and wave discs from the early 1980s. It was clear from the outset that Sowas Von Egal 2 would need to scale similar heights of excellence as its predecessor, featuring carefully selected, sought-after, danceable tunes. Bureau B began by compiling a pool of potential tracks, a creative process of lively discussion in the spirit of "open-mindedness" which culminated in a list of priority targets. After research and rich encounters with input from musicians, friends, and acquaintances, Bureau B revised their target list several times over -- some artists simply could not be found, a few had actually passed away. There were also some who were determined not to revisit their own musical history and asked the label to leave out their songs. Some tracks are so rare that they do not even appear on YouTube. Bureau B have picked up the rights to release them. In contrast to the first volume, most of the acts on Sowas Von Egal 2 were only active in the early 1980s and have not released any records since then. The tape artists were particularly invested in the DIY ethic -- as is often apparent in their sound aesthetics and the unbridled energy which has lost none of its intensity today. Their art was seldom -- if ever -- tempered by commercial considerations or sales strategies. The photograph on the cover beautifully captures the paradoxical tensions which pervaded the atmosphere of the early Eighties: new beginnings, renewal, protest and self-empowerment on one side, frustration, hedonism, future anxiety, and destructive rage on the other. The DIY spirit ingrained in the music and attitude of the bands and artists gathered here is also brought into focus, whilst simultaneously establishing a connection to Hamburg. Mastering by Tom Morgenstern. Artwork by Biljana Tomic. Features Die Neue Weltmacht, Christian Kneisel, Silberstreif, Lieferschein, 4712, Plastiktanz, Rolf Jungklaus, Vono, Kleenex Aktiv, Conrad + Gregor Schnitzler, Partner Eins, Mark Montan, "In" Seit, Mittageisen, Die Synthetische Republik, and Casino Mariteam.

WHIRLYWIRLD Complete Recordings 1978-80 LP
"Whirlywirld was an Australian post-punk band led by Ian 'Ollie' Olsen (Reals, Young Charlatans), and the first of his musical collaborations with drummer John Murphy (News). The band formed Whirlywirld in 1978 with their stated priority from the outset, to go electronic, determined as they were to take flight from the sonic limitations of the conventional, guitar-based rock format. A pioneer of synthesizer punk, the band came across with something of the experimentation of Suicide, Throbbing Gristle or Cabaret Voltaire, and also with the more song-oriented sound of Joy Division. Along with The Primitive Calculators they were supporters of the Melbourne 'Little Band' scene. Whirlywirld was completed by two keyboardists, who got credited with 'electronics', Andrew Duffield and Simon Smith (Olsen, by this point, had abandoned guitar in favor of 'electronics') together with guitarist Dean Richards. The band made their live debut at The Crystal Ballroom in 1979, by which time Duffield left to join The Models and had been replaced by Philip Jackson. Whirlywirld would go on to play only fourteen performances in their entire career. Gradually, in accordance with a change in direction, Richards, Jackson and Smith departed, with Richards going on to front a couple of cult combos, Equal Local and Hot Half Hour. Arnie Hanna came in on guitar and Greg Sun on bass. During this period Murphy played an array of percussion devices, natural, electronic or otherwise and Olsen even played saxophone as well as keyboards, The first incarnation of the band released a self-titled 7" EP in 1979 including the tracks 'Window To The World'/'Moto' on one side and 'Signals' on the other side. The second incarnation of the band recorded a number of tracks at York Street Studios in December, 1979. Four of these tracks came out on a 12" EP, again titled 'Whirlywirld' in February 1980. In 1980 the band released an untitled 12" mini album as well as a 7" single, all through Missing Link Records. In 1986 an album titled 'The Complete Studio Works' was also released through Missing Link Records. After the band split, Olsen and Murphy went on to form firstly The Beast Apparel, and then Hugo Klang, which performed a handful of gigs in England, and recorded a single, 'Beat Up On The Old Shack', released in Australia on Prince Melon Records. Olsen and Murphy then went on to form Orchestra of Skin and Bone, before their musical partnership ended with Olsen going to form NO in the late 1980's. Hanna and Murphy later played with Olsen and Michael Hutchence in the band Max Q. A version of one of Whirlywirld's songs, 'Win or Lose', was re-recorded by Olsen in 1986 for inclusion in the film Dogs In Space. Hutchence sang the early Whirlywirld song, 'Rooms for the Memory' on the soundtrack, being a hit on the mainstream Australian charts as a single in 1987. The remixed version of 'Win or Lose' was also released as a single by Olsen."

JELINEK, JAN Tierbeobachtungen LP
Repressed. Faitiche presents Jan Jelinek's album Tierbeoachtungen on vinyl for the first time, originally released on Scape in 2006. The album's six tracks took their cues from Jelinek's live concerts of that period: dense, slowly unfolding loop improvisations made with a laptop, various effect pedals, and miniature synthesizers. It is music that floats in a semi-conscious state between dream and awakening, always slightly mysterious, leaving traces that lead directly to the psychedelic-cosmic music of the kraut era. Includes download code.In his release notes for Tierbeobachtungen at the time, the late lamented Martin Büsser wrote (2006): "The animal is experiencing a renaissance in music. It provides a reflective surface for our notion of the unbridled and irrational, of that Other the philosophers Deleuze/Guattari -- as part of their 'Animalisation' -- called the embodiment of artistic deliverance. And yet, how much of a liberation can art actually tolerate? To what extent can music truly throw off its fetters without descending into chaos? Jan Jelinek's album title provides a first hint of this development: Tierbeobachtungen (animal observations) is his fourth album for ~scape, and it addresses the issue of release and liberation. Recorded almost in transit, while preparing his move to a new studio, the tracks reveal and relish in their improvisational character, and drifting, lost sound -- yet they never lose sight of their underlying structure. Tierbeobachtungen might be Jelinek's freest and most personal work, with simply arranged tracks based on four to five layered and modulated loops, while his own studio equipment provides the main sampling sources, from synthesizer and guitaret to vibraphonette. Jelinek takes on the role of observer on this record, with a level of reflection remaining audible throughout. However, this is by no means intellectual, distanced music -- Jelinek leads us straight into a thicket, an acoustic jungle where sumptuous splendour meets the uncanny. A long tradition of psychedelic music pervades the recordings -- Amon Düül, Cluster, My Bloody Valentine -- yet whatever musical memories might vie for our attention, these are no clear-cut references, just loose associations. . . Similar to the pioneers of industrial music, like Cabaret Voltaire or Zoviet France, who experimented with field recordings to challenge Western listening habits, Tierbeobachtungen takes us to new, unknown territories and brims with sounds that defy geographic or stylistic classification, not unlike the semi-conscious state between dream and awakening. (...)"

GOOD MISSIONARIES, THE Fire From Heaven LP
Spittle Records present a reissue of The Good Missionaries' Fire From Heaven, originally released in 1979. Born out of the ashes of Alternative TV, The Good Missionaries embodied Mark Perry's new and advanced experimental-post-punk vision. Avoiding all kinds of average rock cliches, Perry got more and more deeply into an uncompromised form of music. A totally new area where his solid Punk roots were confronted by a more free, radical approach to the sound material. During their lifetime, The Good Missionaries toured and gigged with other distinctive, unconventional bands such as The Fall, The Pop Group, Crass, Scritti Politti... Recorded live on their 1979 tour, Fire From Heaven comes as tangible proof of the band's explosive energy on stage. An infectious mix of electric noise, raw grooves, space, and resolute punk attitude. This brand new, digitally remastered edition comes as the first vinyl reissue since its 1979 original release.
