Trama:
THE LIBRARIAN: QUEST FOR THE SPEAR.

A Conversation with Noah Wyle ("Flynn Carsen")

Q: qual'è stata la sua reazione dopo aver letto THE LIBRARIAN: QUEST FOR THE SPEAR?

A: includeva alcune delle mie persone preferite Bob Newhart, Olympia Dukakis, Jane Curtin, Kyle MacLachlan, Sonya Walger and Kelly Hu.

BATTUTE

Flynn Carsen: I just want to get to know the Nicole beneath the surface arrogance. Peel back the layers.
Nicole Noone: What do you think is below the surface arrogance?
Flynn Carsen: More arrogance. And then perhaps a few delicious layers of flaky disdain. All around a creamy sweet center of homicidal rage.

Nicole Noone: You only live once.
Flynn Carsen: Unless you believe in Buddhism...
Nicole Noone: I hate you so much.

Flynn Carsen: These books speak to me.
Margie Carsen: They speak to you? What do the say? Do they tell you to do things? Do they tell you to start fires? You shouldn't listen to what they tell you, especially if they have you do bad things or hurt animals.

Flynn Carsen: The fate of the world is in my hands. That's just so...sad.

Flynn Carsen: I hate it when you smile. That means you're about to do something incredibly dangerous.

Nicole Noone:Get your own geek!

Flynn Carsen:I don't even have a parking space. I really think you should get a parking place before you're assigned to fight an evil conspiracy

Nicole Noone:I am so far out of your league that if your league exploded, I wouldn't hear it for three days.

Flynn Carsen:I don't want to go if I'm not coming back

Judson:"Who else wants a piece'a me?"

Flynn Carsen:What is this, Slap the Librarian Day?"

Charlene (coldly): What makes you think you could be the Librarian?
Flynn Carsen : I know the Dewey decimal system, Library of Congress, research paper orthodoxy, web searching, I can set up a RSS feed...
Charlene (stifling a sigh): Everybody can do that. They're librarians.

Flynn Carsen:I should have known he was evil. He gave me an A-.

Judson:That box belonged to a gal named Pandora. Maybe it is best we don't open it?

Flynn Carsen(?):Twit tweet tweet brrr bip bop bip twit. In the language of the birds that means "You're up a creek, and I've got the paddle."

Nicole Noone: Nobody questions the Librarian - not even the Librarian.

and it's just so.....SAD!

>>Listen up, HBO. I've got your next guest star right here. Chatting up his latest project, TNT original "The Librarian: Quest for the Spear", Noah Wyle divulges that while his wife, makeup artist Tracy Warbin, has joined the masses of "Desperate Housewives" devotees, his TV loyalties lie with HBO's "Deadwood". When I suggest that he consider a guest-starring role on the gritty western series, the Emmy nominee almost gushes, "From your lips to God's ears!".

Until the call comes down from God or HBO, though, Wyle will keep himself busy with the Dec. 5 premiere of "The Librarian". In this adventure story, Wyle stars as Flynn Carsen, a thirtysomething bookworm desperate to stay in grad school -- he's got to earn his 23rd degree, after all. When he's finally booted from his university, fate brings Flynn to the New York Public Library and and job as "the librarian". Under the tutelage of Judson (Bob Newhart, who, with Jane Curtin, turns in the film's funniest performance), Flynn learns that he is now the protector of the world's greatest secrets. Just how secret? When he gets a little too curious, Judson stops him and calmly explains, "This box belonged to a girl named Pandora..."

When the Spear of Destiny is stolen from the library by the nefarious Serpent Brotherhood, Flynn goes on an adventure he never dreamed possible. Taking on an action role was a dream of Indiana Jones proportions come true for the ER veteran. "It's a genre I've always enjoyed watching," he says. "And it was definitely different from the last 11 years!".

Eleven years as an ER doctor, a stint as a librarian and an adventurer -- can Deadwood cowboy be far behind?>>

FOtoooooooooo!!!

So I have the press kit and a dvd of The Librarian. Really amazing presentation: they've packaged the whole thing in a box that looks like an old-fashioned leather suitcase, with all the stickers from around the world. Lots of gorgeous photos, some Q&A, etc., are contained.

Something of note: the press materials make mention that Noah is leaving ER this season, and making the transition to this role, saying it's a new phase in his career. I don't think we can get much more official than this, folks.

As far as the movie, first of all I want to take back every negative word I said about Sonya Walger's casting. Every single one. She's *so* good, and she looks stunning. They've got great chemistry together (it was essential that they do for the movie to work). There's a subplot where Flynn's mother keeps trying to set him up on blind dates, and it's a hoot.

Noah looks better than we've seen him in ages. It's amazing what a shirt and pants, rather than a baggy scrubs, will do for a person's looks. He gets to show off his comedic skills, and they're still sharp, even after not being used for years. Remember all the physical comedy he used to have on ER back in the first season? He even juggles.

I get a sense of the more irreverent S1 Carter out of this character, but with more edge (shoutout to Noah's character in Beggars and Choosers!), more humor, far less approval-seeking. There's even a tiny little echo of Benton/Carter in the relationship he has with Jane Curtin's character.

Flynn and Nicole are good together without being forced. There's a nice chemistry between them, but there aren't any anvils or any secondary character pointing out that there are fireworks, etc. Fancy that...good writing and good performances! The actors are all professionals -- no scenery chewing, no mugging, no inappropriate expressions.

Noah's excellent. I don't hesitate to point out when he's bad (Enough, anyone?) but he's really comfortable with this role, and he's at his best when he's relaxed.

Kyle McLachlan's a sort of comic book villain, but it fits the tone of the movie. No one's taking themselves too seriously.

It really comes across that they were having a blast making this film, and that makes it all the more entertaining. And did I mention that Noah and Sonya are pretty hot together?

An excerpt:

>>TNT's action-adventure movie The Librarian: Quest for the Spear is Raiders of the Lost Arc lite, but it still manages plenty of substance. The film is filled with action, good performances and a light comic touch. The silliness quotient never ruins the entertainment value, largely due to Noah Wyle's refreshing performance as Flynn.

Wyle, a veteran of the much more serious-minded ER, fills Flynn with a childlike enthusiasm that gives The Librarian a charming and endearing quality, allowing us to sit back and enjoy the ride.
Jane Curtin, Sonya Walger and Olympia Dukakis offer plenty of wonderful backup, with Bob Newhart and Kelly Hu giving standout performances. It makes you wonder why we don't see Newhart and Hu in more films. Only Kyle MacLachlan gets short-sheeted by the script, as the one-dimensional Big Bad.

Buone cose, buone cose[SM=g27811]

The Librarian: Quest for the Spear (Sunday, 8 p.m., TNT) makes good on its droll title. A satire of Raiders of the Lost Ark-style adventure, the film begins as a nerdy graduate student named Flynn (Noah Wyle) works on his 22nd degree. His professor accuses him of staying in school to hide from life and kicks him out of the program for his own good. Shattered, Flynn is forced onto the job market, but what kind of career is available to a guy who's mastered all the world's knowledge?

He lands an interview for a mysterious librarian position, gets the job after a semi-supernatural interview, and learns to his dismay that he's been put in charge of a secret collection of artifacts. The Ark of the Covenant, Excalibur, Pandora's Box - no, Toto, we're not in the Dewey Decimal System anymore.

Who knew that Wyle, late of E.R., is a comic master from the Woody Allen school? Step aside Jason Alexander and Tony Shalhoub - Wyle does bumbling incompetence as well as any TV actor now working. He's perfectly cast as a boob who gets in way over his head when, on his first day of work, he's asked to save the world. The Serpent Brotherhood has stolen a magical sword from the library's collection and plans to use it to rule all creation. Flynn's stone-faced supervisors (Jane Curtin and Bob Newhart) inform him that retrieving the sword is, in fact, part of his job description.

"You know," Flynn says, scrambling to back out of the assignment, "this is my first day, and I don't even have a parking place. I really think you should have a parking place before you get assigned to fight an evil conspiracy."
He's probably right: I'm sure Indiana Jones had parking covered before he began his own magical quest.

AS A CARD-CARRYING LIBRARY FAN, let me say that the TV movie The Librarian: Quest for the Spear (also this Sunday, December 5, at 8 p.m. on TNT) is long overdue. It’s about time that professional book nerds were hailed as the true superheroes they are. Organizers of knowledge, guardians of freedom, librarians get little respect in these days of Google, bookstore/coffee warehouses, and the Patriot Act. There’s a whole generation of young people who think Starbucks is a suitable place to do homework, who think nothing of downloading music yet couldn’t find their way to a library (psst, that’s a place where you can take books home for free) with MapQuest.

Anyway, The Librarian: Quest for the Spear is exactly what the title suggests — a fantasy/action movie with a librarian as the hero. There isn’t a trick in it that Indiana Jones hasn’t pulled, but it has some unexpected pleasures. (There are plans to make other Librarian movies if this one pulls decent ratings.) Noah Wyle’s Flynn Carsen is a perpetual grad who is 30 years old, holds 22 degrees, and lives with his mommy (Olympia Dukakis). Flynn needs to get a life, and one appears in the form of an invitation to interview for a position at the Metropolitan Public Library. It turns out that Flynn is, by destiny, the Librarian, protector of all the greatest treasures of myth and history. The Ark of the Covenant, Pandora’s Box, Excalibur — they all exist, and they all reside in the basement of the library. The library is run by a mysterious stoop-shouldered man named Judson and his no-nonsense assistant, Charlene. Wait, here’s the good part: Charlene is played by Jane Curtin, snippy as ever, and Judson is Bob Newhart. Yes! Bob Newhart! And Newhart’s phlegmatic, stammered readings of florid lines like, "Trust me. This is . . . is . . . your destiny," give The Librarian its amiable, self-depreciating tone.

Flynn’s first mission is to retrieve the Spear of Destiny (pierced Jesus’s side, gives unlimited power to those who possess it), which has been stolen by the evil Serpent Brotherhood. The Brotherhood is headed by Edward Wilde (a very silly Kyle MacLachlan), the previous Librarian, who has gone over to the dark side. Wimpy Flynn is assisted by Library operative Nicole Noone (Sonja Walger), a tough-talking babe in regulation Old Navy tank top and cargo pants. Their pursuit of the Spear takes them from the Amazon to the Himalaya, leaving no special effect unturned, especially the ones we’ve seen a zillion times before (the disintegrating bridge, the jinxed pyramid). But Wyle’s geeky charm and the story’s glorification of book learnin’ are enough to keep the good vibes aloft and (please read this next part in the voice of Bob Newhart) prevent viewers from, uh, from check-checking out.

The Librarian: Quest For The Spear (2004)
by Sandra Ray
TNT's latest stars Noah Wylie in an Indiana Jones style caper.

I think every woman in America would jump at the chance to review a movie starring Noah Wyle (ER). Since it's his last season with the television hit, plenty of people are wondering just where he'll end up next.
TNT snapped him up for their television movie The Librarian: Quest for the Spear. Although the plot's been overdone with other action films, it has its own funny quirks. Ever since the Indiana Jones movies made action flicks famous for the "good guys," everyone has their own version of this popular plot. Librarians aren't high on the list of professions that I would give the title of "Hero," yet there is something to the overall storyline that makes it funny enough to pass the test.

Wyle plays Flynn Carsen, a bit of an oddball who still lives at home with mother while earning 22 college degrees. When a professor unceremoniously kicks him out of school and tells him to get a job, an invitation to apply at the Metropolitan Public Library appears. This library, however, doesn't just house your everyday books. A few artifacts, such as the Ark of the Covenant and Pandora's Box, are housed in the underground archives.

Other stars add comic relief, such as Bob Newhart (The Bob Newhart Show) with his first-ever fight scenes. Jane Curtin (Third Rock from the Sun) works at the library too and is the perfect addition to Newhart's sense of humor. Kyle Machlachlan (Sex in the City) and Olympia Dukakis round out the cast. Even though Wyle's co-star Sonya Walger isn't a stranger to television, most of her work is overseas and relatively unknown to the crowd expected by TNT. I wish Walger's and Wyle's chemistry would have shown up a little more during the action parts of the movie, but they still complement each other nicely.

Parents of older children will be pleased that this movie contains little profanity, and none of it on the lewd side. The fight scenes are relatively benign also. I don't know that I would classify The Librarian as a family show, but it's much better than most of what's out there today.

Even though the plot was a little too predictable for me, it would make for a nice jumping off point to a series. I'm not sure if Wyle's ready for another series after finishing up with ER, but this one could fit his style nicely. His boyish charm and looks fit the clueless librarian perfectly. Overall, I have to mark this one in the win column.

What to watch this weekend Robert Bianco Usa Today
Never mind National Treasure. TV has a tiny treasure hunter of its own: The Librarian: Quest for the Spear (* * * out of four, TNT, Sunday, 8 p.m. ET/PT).

Flimsily built but easy to like, Librarian is a spoofy gender-twist on The Mummy, with Sonya Walger as the brawn and ER's Noah Wyle as the previously cloistered brains, translating ancient texts and taking goofy delight in his own geeky cleverness. If it's very silly, watching Wyle be silly is a large part of the film's appeal. Heaven knows we've seen him suffer enough.

Wyle is Flynn Carson, a professional student who is hired by two semi-magical curators (Bob Newhart and Jane Curtin) to guard the Metropolitan Public Library's secret stash of ancient relics. When part of the "Spear of Destiny" is stolen, Flynn must find the other hidden sections before the bad guys can put them all together and rule the world.

So it's a race through secret doors, Mayan ruins and Asian mountains, leading to a girl fight launched by the immortal words "Get your own geek." Some of it feels forced, but there is fun to be had in the clever dialogue, the complicated plot and Wyle's doofus-on-the-loose performance. Moderate your expectations — and enjoy.

A wily bookworm is coming to beat you bad boys down, save the world and give "ER" star Noah Wyle a playful new acting persona in "The Librarian: Quest for the Spear." The witty, lighthearted adventure drama, a breezy, B-movie pastiche of everything from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" to "Romancing the Stone," premieres at 8 p.m. Sunday on TNT.

Wyle, who usually sports hospital scrubs and emotional angst as Dr. John Carter on "ER," seems to be having a grand time as the reluctant action hero Flynn Carsen. Still living at home with his mother (Olympia Dukakis), Carsen's a slightly dithering, 30-year-old intellectual freak with 22 degrees and a mad obsession for books.

But fate slaps this perpetual grad student upside his high IQ with a job offer he can't refuse.

Interviewing for a position at the Metropolitan Public Library, run by a mysterious old guy named Judson (Bob Newhart), Carsen is tapped for a job that Indiana Jones would love -- protecting the greatest treasures of history, such epic relics as the Ark of the Covenant, the sword Excalibur and Pandora's Box, all of which are housed in the vast subterranean stacks of the library.

But first, an emergency mission. Carsen is dispatched on a globe-trotting odyssey to recover the Spear of Destiny, an ancient and powerful holy relic that's been stolen by the sinister Serpent Brotherhood.

And since our brainiac nebbish needs some protection, fabulous action babe Nicole Noone (Sonya Walger, "Mind of the Married Man") is sent along to provide tough-cookie security as they journey from the Amazon to the Himalayas. While coping with Mayan death traps, collapsing bridges, humongous waterfalls and deadly headhunters, Wyle and Walger also share odd-couple banter and a zingy romantic chemistry.

Does our dizzily dynamic duo foil the Serpent Brotherhood, recover the Spear of Destiny and save the world? Well, duh!

Not only that, Wyle proves that he's not just a one-trick medical drama doctor. And "The Librarian: Quest for the Spear" supplies a happy slice of old-fashioned Saturday matinee escapism. It's fast, loose and fun. Sequel please.

Wyle trades scrubs for role as adventurer in 'Librarian'
By MIKE MlccucDANIEL

There's no mistaking Noah Wyle for Harrison Ford, but the doctor of NBC's ER proves there's a bit of Indiana Jones in him in the television movie The Librarian: Quest for the Spear. The adventure story -- the first of what could be a series of Librarian movies -- debuts 7 p.m. Sunday on TNT.

"Quest for the Spear is something you really haven't seen on television before, which is feature-quality, action-adventure, romantic escapist entertainment," said Wyle. "We set out to serialize this character and if the movie is received well, TNT has already put in three more stories, the best of which we'll hopefully shoot next year."

Wyle plays Flynn Carsen, a 30-year-old student kicked out of school because his professor believes Flynn -- after earning 22 degrees -- lacks life experience. "The things that make life worth living can't be taught here," the professor tells Flynn, pointing to his head. "They must be felt here," he says, pointing to his heart.

Though disturbed to be out of his academic element, Flynn is nonetheless intrigued when he receives a mysterious invitation to interview for a job at the Metropolitan Public Library. There he is hired by two other-worldly beings (Bob Newhart, Jane Curtin), who tell him his job will be to protect the greatest treasures of history, including such mythical objects as the Ark of the Covenant, Pandora's Box and the Golden Goose.

Ah, but there's a problem. Members of a group called the Serpent Brotherhood want access to one of those goodies for malevolent purposes. If they can obtain all three portions of the Spear of Destiny, they can control the future of the world. Already the brotherhood has one piece of the spear. It will be up to Flynn, with the help of a tough-as-nails library operative named Nicole (Sonya Walger), to prevent the brotherhood from obtaining the other two portions.

Their mission takes them to the world's most magical and mysterious places, from the Amazon to Shangri-La. Along the way, they encounter all manner of mischief, from deadly headhunters to collapsing bridges. Flynn must exhibit skills more common to Indiana Jones than the bookworm he is. These moments provide comic relief to the otherwise standard action-adventure film.
Wyle, who practiced pratfalls as well as medicine in his first season on ER, was up to the comedic tasks.

"A lot of times it's easier to play (in storylines with) cancer and infectious disease than it is to try and figure out what's funny," he said, "but it presents a really fun challenge, and you get to go to work with a whole different sense of sensibilities. I felt very much as if I were going over to my friend's back yard and playing dress-up."

Wyle falls a lot in the movie and takes a few punches from his attractive co-star.

"Sonya Walger can pack a punch," he said. "We had done about 12 takes of one scene (in which Walger pokes him in the jaw), and she really let me have it.[SM=g27824]

"(Producer) Dean Devlin said he hadn't quite heard the right smack sound and wanted to go a couple more times. I kept telling him, the smack is something he could add (in post-production) and he said, 'No, No, we'll feel it, we'll feel it.' Sure enough, she walloped me with a left hook and my whole face ballooned up red. I was reactionless for about three seconds, it hurt so much." [SM=g27824]

Wyle said that working with Newhart and Curtin was a priceless (and less physically tortuous) opportunity he hopes to revisit in sequels.

"Off camera, they are two of the best storytellers I've ever had the pleasure of listening to," he said. "On camera, they are two of the most specific and focused performers I've ever worked with. Bob Newhart's deliveries should be copyrighted; they are so specific to him. Working with a rhythm like that is both exciting and challenging because you have to find a way to complement and engage it without hindering it. That's really a trick when you're working with someone as good as he is

Were they instrumental in choosing Noah Wyle, or was that your choice?
From day one, TNT said that they saw Noah Wyle in the part. I had always thought that Noah was a brilliant actor but I didn't know if he could do comedy, because I had seen him do drama. But my feeling has always been, if you go with a really talented actor you can never go wrong. So we went with Noah, and then to my shock, I found that he was a brilliant comedian. That his comic timing was impeccable. We were all kind of shocked and blown away. I think it's a really interesting thing, especially for people who have seen him play Dr. Carter for 11 years now. When they see him in this part, you literally forget about that other character. It's one of the few times I've seen an actor really transcend the character you've fallen in love with and become a brand new character. And he does that, really successfully. I think this will change the way people think about him forever.

Will there be any more "The Librarian" TV movies?

Well that all depends on how well we do this Sunday. If the audiences respond, if they show up to watch it, our plan is to do one of these a year for the next couple of years. And then assuming that the audiences respond to it I'd like to take it out and actually do it as a series of feature films.

Has that been done before?

The only thing I can think of that's similar is Star Trek, which started as a television series and then became a series of movies. Of course there's been other movies based on series'. But not taking the original cast and expanding it. I think we live in a time now when studios want some assurances that there is an audience for a film before they make it. Which is why so many films are either sequels, or remakes, or based on television properties, or children's novels, or video games. So our hope is that we can develop the audience on television, and be able to show that there's a loyal following for "The Librarian." We've also released a series of books from ibooks, which is available in stores now. The first book is this story, but we're going to do a series of Librarian stories in novels. So our hope is to develop the property on multiple platforms, and develop that audience so that when the time comes to do a feature film, we already know that there's a loyal following.

Oakland Tribune

EARLIER this year, Noah Wyle chatted with reporters about his last season on "ER" and how odd it was to be the old man of the series after starting out as the green, new guy.
We wondered what the future held for the affable actor.

Well, he said, he was going to do a movie for TNT and had the title role of ... the librarian?

We'll brush those earlier doubts aside and let you know that this is a charming, self-deprecating tale of professional student Flynn Carsen, whose first job out in the world is to, well, save the world.

Flynn is forced by a professor to get a j-o-b, which proves more difficult than he imagined. Living with his mother (Olympia Dukakis), he realizes just how pathetic he is when mom fixes him up with yet another daughter-of-a-friend who asks him about himself and his life.

So when an offer to interview for a job at the Metropolitan Public Library magically appears, he jumps at it. He meets the mysterious library head Judson (Bob Newhart) and his assistant Charlene (Jane Curtin) and passes the test.

Turns out the librarian guards the world's treasures, from Pandora's Box to Excalibur. When bad guy (Kyle MacLachlan) threatens to wreak havoc on the world by stealing the Spear of Destiny, it's up to Flynn to solve a series of mysteries and come to the rescue. He's aided by the beautiful Nicole (Sonya Walger).

Producer Dean Devlin ("Independence Day") brings to the small screen a thoroughly entertaining production that's part "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and part "Romancing the Stone," with the adventure, romance and humor of both.

And where else will you find Newhart making like Chuck Norris?

Noah Wyle says his newest TV project is "just pure escapist entertainment."

THE LIBRARIAN: QUEST FOR THE SPEAR

8 p.m. Sunday, TNT

Imagine an action-adventure with Indiana Jones-like challenges and Joan Wilder-watt romantic sparks - only it doesn't involve a swashbuckling archaeology professor or a famous novelist, but a nerdy 30-year-old mama's boy and perpetual student.

What you get is Noah Wyle's newest TV project - "The Librarian: Quest for the Spear"- and it's good, old-fashioned, unadult fun.

"That's exactly what drew me to this," Wyle says, on the phone. "It's just pure escapist entertainment. You can't read that script and not get a sense of the spirit behind it. It's just a really good throwback to Saturday matinee-type movies, in the tradition of 'Indiana Jones.'Ÿ" The kind, he adds, that kids watch "with a bag of popcorn and a big smile on their face."

Wyle's character, Flynn Carsen, is a big departure from his Dr. John Carter on "ER," a competent physician and smooth ladies' man. Flynn still lives at home with Mom (Olympia Dukakis), who tries to set him up on blind dates. He has earned 22 master's degrees, four in Egyptology, but has never put any to practical use. When a professor bars him from taking more courses, insisting that Flynn needs to brave the real world, he's at a loss.

But then, Flynn gets a mysterious invitation to apply for a job at the Metropolitan Public Library. One of many hopefuls, he faces a no-nonsense interviewer (Jane Curtin), but impresses her with not only his vast trove of knowledge - the guy could give Ken Jennings a run for his money - but his deductive reasoning. Soon, he's being trained by the equally humorless library head, played by the wonderfully deadpan Bob Newhart.

Only after he has the post does Flynn learn its centuries-old secret: A secret wing of the library building houses history's greatest treasures - including the Ark of the Covenant, Pandora's Box and Excalibur - and the Librarian must protect them, at all costs.

After members of the malevolent Serpent Brotherhood break in and steal one portion of the Spear of Destiny - an ancient holy relic that bestows control of the world's fate - Flynn has to track down the other two sections and keep them from falling into the wrong hands. This mission takes him to the Amazon with a gutsy library operative named Nicole Noone (Sonya Walger), who is charged with keeping him safe. Flynn's not encouraged to hear that the last librarian (Kyle MacLachlan) died on her watch.

With the Serpent brotherhood in pursuit, this odd couple contends with deadly headhunters, rushing waterfalls, collapsing bridges and Mayan death traps. Ultimately, their journey takes them across the globe, to the fabled kingdom of Shangri-La.

"The Librarian," written and co-produced by David Titcher, was filmed in Mexico.

"It was a very physical job - shooting in the jungle, running and jumping and leaping, and then, simulating Mayan death chambers, collapsing temples, collapsing bridges," he says. "I felt honestly like I was going over to my best friends' yard to play. ... I can't overstate how much fun I had doing the job."

The actor liked playing the character's dichotomy - "he's very smart, but he's not very strong" - and says it was an "intimidating thrill" to have worked with Curtin and Newhart, comedy pros he has long admired.

"Being thrown in the scene where I was supposed to be acting between them was terrifying. You're talking about two people who have the most specific rhythms," says Wyle. (He did not appear in the three "ER" episodes in which Newhart guest-starred in 2003.)

If ratings for "The Librarian" are good, Flynn may return. "We made it with the hope and intent of making a series of films," says Wyle, who expects to have more time for such projects.

Though he has said that this 11th "ER" season will likely be his last as Dr. Carter - at least his final full season - Wyle still has not tired of the guy, who has evolved from naïve intern to seasoned doctor.

"I will always have a good time playing him. He is and always will be very much a part of me," Wyle says. "I'm very proud of the arc that we've presented with him. I think very few characters on television have the trajectory he has. ... It's really gratifying."

From Variety

Sports cabler edged TNT for the 18-49 crown last week, though the Turner-owned channel delivered a whopping 7 million viewers for its original adventure movie "The Librarian: Quest for the Spear."

The 8 p.m. telepic beat CBS and WB in 18-49 rankings, posting a 2.8/6 in the time period. Movie also posted strong 25-54 numbers (3.3/7) and drew an additional 2. 9 million viewers to the 10 p.m. encore.

"Librarian" ranks as the most-watched movie year-to-date on ad-supported cable; it's tops in adults 18-49, 25-54 and total viewers. Made-for, exec produced by Dean Devlin, stars Noah Wyle as a bookworm called upon to save the world.

From USA Today.

Noah scores. TNT's The Librarian: Quest for the Spear, starring ER's Noah Wyle, averaged a healthy 7 million viewers and is the season's top basic-cable movie.

From the Washington Post.

"The Librarian: Quest for the Spear." Noah Wyle is a hot nerdy librarian who's put in charge of humanity's greatest secrets -- Pandora's box, the goose that laid the golden egg, the Bill O'Reilly phone tapes -- hidden under the New York Metropolitan Library, and when the Serpent Brotherhood snatches part of the Spear of Destiny (look it up) he has to retrieve it before they gain control of the world. If you're among the nearly 7 million who tuned in on TNT, you helped make it basic cable's No. 1 flick of the year.

The Librarian: Quest For The Spear
By Aaman Lamba

TNT's "The Librarian", an original, made-for-television film turned out to be a fun watch, pitching a smart, young Noah Wyle(ER, A Few Good Men) as the person responsible for managing a cornucopia of secret treasures hidden under the New York Metropolitan Library. These treasures include some of humanity's greatest secrets, such as Pandora's Box and the Spear of Destiny, which is stolen by the bad guys. The rest of the film is the boyish, intellectual action hero cum Librarian's quest for the parts of the spear, aided by the requisite female interest, played by Sonya Walger (Coupling, Mind of the Married Man). Bob Newhart appears in an entertaining bit part.

The film's music is it's failing - the canned variety and inappropriate at times. The adventures are predictable with convenient saves out of a video game, such as jumping off a collapsing bridge and being taken hostage by pygmies who turn friendly. Some of the scenes are quite entertaining, as when the hero dances the Blue Danube with his sidekick to get through a torrent of arrows. The hero is very well read and solves most puzzles by dint of his knowledge of topics like ancient Portuguese, the language of the Birds and sheer deduction a la Holmes. Of course, Jimmy Neutron displays similar depth of knowledge, albeit in a different setting.

A few mistakes in the intricate story are evident, like the reference to a language called 'Indian' and linen sheets in a hut in the Amazonian jungle. The story switches from New York to the Amazon jungle, and to the Himalayas in the quest, all depicted visually well, if too set-like. The twists are the usual kind - one will not give them away only so that the reruns are not upset.

Overall, the film is derivative and predictable but a good, entertaining Sunday evening television adventure with good acting by Noah Wyle and an interesting premise that could well derive a few sequels.

By: ANN ZIVOTSKY - For the North County Times

On the list of unlikely action heroes, which includes the actors Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser, add Noah Wyle, who is the perfect lead for TNT's new adventure, "The Librarian: Quest for the Spear," airing at 8 p.m. Sunday.

Bravo to TNT for coming up with a fun, adventure movie for the holiday television season, an antidote to the sickeningly sweet, sentimental fare on most channels. Wyle plays 30-year-old Flynn Carsen, who has dozens of college degrees, lives at home with his mother (the great Olympia Dukakis) and is afraid to leave the world of academia.

Forced out into the real world, Flynn is recruited for a job at the Metropolitan Public Library. But this job doesn't involve shelving books but, instead, protecting the world's greatest treasures ---- including Excalibur and Pandora's box. As "The Librarian," Flynn is assigned to bring back the Spear of Destiny, the legendary spear used to pierce Jesus Christ's side during the crucifixion, which has fallen into the hands of an evil cult leader.

Flynn's development as The Librarian is watched over by Charlene (Jane Curtain) and Judson (Bob Newhart in a very new role for him), both of whom have both street smarts and mystical abilities to give Flynn a hand in his adventures. Watching over Flynn's physical life is Sonya Walger as Nicole, a butt-kicking bodyguard for Flynn. She's the brawn, and he's the brains, which is a nice twist.

Wyle and the supporting cast play wonderfully off each other. Great expressions come across Wyle's face, while Newhart delivers lines with his famous dry wit. Wyle is the perfect absent-minded professor ---- he trips in the Amazon and then is distracted by a species of flower he's landed next to. And when he realizes the fate of the world is in his hands, his only response is, "That is so sad."

The only actor who can't strike the right balance in this retro-adventure is Kyle MacLachlan as the evil cult leader. Instead of playing the part over the top, MacLachlan just overacts.

TNT has set up "The Librarian" to be a continuing series and let's hope there are enough viewers to make that happen because this "Librarian" is worth renewing again and again.

The Librarian breaks ratings records, sequel is on the way

Arclight Films is proud to announce the overwhelming success of the TNT broadcast of The Librarian, the highest rated movie shown on cable television this year, beating out both made for television films as well as all theatrical motion pictures shown.

This success marks an auspicious beginning for the trilogy, making it the benchmark franchise for television in the years to come, especially with the next two films right around the corner. Production for the second instalment is scheduled for spring 2005 and to be broadcasted in the US the following December.

The Librarian stars the five time Emmy nominated and three time Golden Globe nominated Noah Wyle (ER), Kyle MacLachlan, Kelly Hu, Olympia Dukakis, Sonia Walger, Jane Curtain and Bob Newhart. The $10M effects packed television movie in the style of Indiana Jones is Devlin’s first venture into television movies, with the idea of creating a franchise similar to the theatrical event movies Devlin made with Roland Emmerich.

Devlin quotes 'It’s a challenge to bring the kind of scale and FX we feel this franchise deserves, but that’s the real fun of it. The first film was shot in HD and had over 300 digital FX shots in it. The next one will have to top it!' Devlin and his Electric producing team Marc Roskin and Kearie Peak aim to make two or three movies in the next few years with TNT and a theatrical feature film in three years.

The film tells the story of a repository for humanity’s greatest secrets, all hidden beneath the monolithic New York Metropolitan Library. From the Golden Fleece to the Ark of the Covenant, every enigma and artefact from every known and unknown civilization is protected from the forces of Evil who, if given the chance, would use the priceless treasures for their nefarious plans. Only one man can keep them safe: The Librarian.

Under his Electric Entertainment banner, Devlin is already working on a video game for next year and a novelization has just been released in the US by Simon & Schuster to coincide with the US television premiere and overseas television and DVD premieres. Devlin says “Of course, distributors who get the first film will have first look on the next movies in the series”.

International sales are brisk on the film. 'We presold the movie a lot. We’re finishing the sales right now in the last countries and and are readying ourselves for the sequel' said Nicolas Chartier, from Arclight Films.
