, un quotidiano della Florida, il compositore Tommy Durden rimase colpito da un titolo di cronaca:
«Conoscete quest’uomo ?»
Una fotografia di un suicida accompagnava l'articolo.
L'uomo non aveva lasciato nulla che potesse identificarlo, aveva scritto solo alcune righe con queste parole:
«Sto camminando su una strada solitaria»
La polizia di Miami aveva pubblicato tutto ciò nella speranza che qualcuno potesse identificarlo e questo articolo fornì l’ispirazione a Durden per una canzone
blues
e chiamò concitato l’amica Mae Axton spiegandole la sua idea che venne accettata. I due composero
“Heartbreak Hotel”
in una ventina di minuti... Mae Axton portò il nastro dimostrativo all'annuale raduno di
disc jockey
a Nashville il 10 novembre del 1955 e lo propose ad Elvis che, dopo averlo ascoltato, se ne innamorò letteralmente decidendo di registrare il pezzo nella sua imminente prima
recording session
per la RCA, in gennaio.
