The One That Got Away....and flew over a special person!

Oops! Pooh Bear's balloon flew away in that strong wind! And we did want to keep our presence at today's audience a secret!!!

Mary,

Were you really there at the GA this week???? I noticed you haven't been on the forum for a few days and I was wondering..... [SM=g27823]

Leider - nein!!!!
No, unfortunately Pooh Bear and I weren't there, having only been to Rome as recently as last month. I was discombobulated to see that the audience was outside!!!!!!!!! The sky was blue, just a few clouds on the horizon, but oh that wind!!!!!!!!!!!!! It wasn't just a breeze [SM=g27816] I kept muttering to myself that Dr Buzz should have been consulted, or if not him, then the Vatican's meteorologist. They surely check the weather forecast! Now I shall worry until I know for certain that Papa didn't catch a chill out there. One would have thought the GA would be in the Paul VI Hall until the beginning of March at least. Oh well, they really ought to consult ME!!!!!! [SM=g27828] [SM=g27828] [SM=g27828]

ISN'T THIS A GREAT PICTURE? I NEVER SAW IT BEFORE, BUT IT'S FROM APRIL 2007 FOR PAPINO'S 8OTH BIRTHDAY - AND GLORIA HAS JUST POSTED IT ON HER FORUM. I KNOW I TRANSLATED PETER SEEWALD'S BEAUTIFUL ARTICLE FROM THAT ISSUE BUT I DON'T REMEMBER SEEING THE COVER AT ALL.

DOES ANYONE KNOW IF JOHN PAUL II WAS EVER ON THE COVER OF VANITY FAIR?
OR DID THE GERMAN VANITY FAIR TREAT B16 AS A CELEBRITY FIGURE ONLY BECAUSE HE HAPPENS TO BE GERMAN?

IN ANY CASE, IT IS STILL ODD - BUT MOST WELCOME - TO HAVE A POPE ON THE COVER OF A MAGAZINE LIKE VANITY FAIR!

Terrific!!!!!!!
I've seen a smaller version of that photo, but it's terrific to see it as the cover of a magazine!!!!!!!!!!
Made my day, even if it IS nearly tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That foto on the cover of Vanity Fair. Was it doctored in any way I wonder? Only there is a nimbus of light around the Holy Father. He's a luminous mystery! [SM=g27811] [SM=g27811]

Vanity Fair - again

This photo was taken in our hotel room in Rome when benedetto.fan and I were there in April 07 as we saw in Papa's 80th birthday with celebratory equipment like this issue of Vanity Fair! [SM=g27828] Note on television in the background you can see Mons. Ratzinger.

Goodness gracious me!!!!!
Benevolens and benedetto.fan - how did you manage to get Monsignor Georg on the television just at the moment you took the photo? Love the cover and the copy of "Deus Caritas Est" in German!!!!!!!

Wulfrune: "Luminous Mystery" - I love it!!!!!! This one really must stick!!!!!! "I am in a conventional dither, with a conventional star in my eye, if you'll excuse an expression I use I'm in.... [SM=g27816] oops!" nearly got carried away there

I love that one!! With Franz-Josef Strauß in the background. Very nice. An old style politician, where you knew exactly what he stood for. Black or white. No grey.

Uh, hm...............................

Beyond words!!!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A couple with whom I am friendly in our parish attended the beautiful Mass at Santa Sabina yesterday. They had booked a short break in Rome and it happened to include Ash Wednesday, so I told them where to write for tickets. They did and received a positive reply! I didn't spot them in the church, but that would have been difficult. I do look forward to their return and to a report - would have been their fist "sighting" of our wonderful Holy Father.
STUNC says it all
Benevolens - STUNC!!! [SM=x40798]
If the politician in the background was shades of black and white, our man in the foreground is a blaze of colour!!! We shall never see him in red and black again.... :(
Due to a recent post of Fr Z, I have been observing clerical dress more acutely and I note that Der Kardinale wears a biretta without pompom. Would we have preferred him with? A pompom is so cute, but perhaps it would soften his gravitas too much.... hmmm, need to ponder this one further..... what do others think? [SM=g27833]
Love that Cardinal red photo, Benevolens!
That is one of my absolute favorites. What a cute smile he has!
[SM=g27824]
And Flo is right about the hair in the Ash Wednesday pic.
Hmmm. [SM=g27818] It looks more like somebody was running their fingers through it than sprinkling ashes on it. I don't see any ashes.
Papa at his Prime!!!
Benevolens' latest photos are from my favorite Papa era. He is definitely in his prime there. [SM=g27836]
Of course, I suspect he will still be in his prime when he is 90. [SM=g27811]
Realy benevolens, this should not be allowed - people with a heart condition look away now...
"a snowy dove trooping with crows
so yonder prelate o'er his fellows shows"
The concelebrated Mass - all three priests are very devout and reverent, but the older central one is chust so... well.... [SM=g27816]
I have no idea where these fotos are coming from, but they are certainly conducive to a 'good morning'.
The Ash Wednesday chasuble is such an improvement on the spandex 'Star Trek' one which he was so often unfortunately lumbered with in the past. Did not the Pope receive his ashes after the others? Or was he first to receive them? If so, it's odd they didn't 'stick'.
The Vatican Radio commentator for the Ash Wednesday TV coverage said that at Santa Sabina, the tradition is to deposit the ash on the top of the head, not on the forehead like most us are used to. And Cardinal Tomko put back the Pope's zucchetto on, after he had placed the ashes on his head. His hair got rumpled when he took off the succhetto later to place the ashes in his turn on Cardinal Tomko and others.
Me, I was very happy also that he never coughed once during the whole ceremony (nor did he during the Sunday Angelus). It's quite worrisome when he coughs a lot!
Video from the new Vatican site
www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYPKRIhArYs
Here's a link to a video on the new Vatican news website. It shows what actually happened and you see Papa's hair getting all mussed up!!!!! And then Monsignor Camaldo [whom I love, by the way - he always smiles at me!] putting the zuchetto back on.
Thanks, Mary, for the proof...
...that it wasn't you who tousled Papa's hair. I really thought if anybody was going to do it, it would have to be you but, okay, you aren't guilty........this time.
