INIZIO IGNORANCE SHOW 2004
------------------------------------
1° Carraronan
(avvertimento riguardo un errore PER LORO imbarazzante)
----------------------
I was reading Gurps Basic Set Deluxe when I see an error on p.342 (Introduction).
The word Compendiums is wrong.
Compendium isn't an english word, is a latin word.
Compendium (singolar, nominative) follow the second declination, neutral gender.
So, the plural is Compendia.
In Italy we have the same problem: who doesn't know Latin language usually say "Compendi" (wrong word, of course).
And we also commit the error to say "Curriculi" as plural for "Curriculum" when also the stones know that the plural is "Curricula" (latin, 2° declination, neutral) [SM=x77423])
But in a book I think will be better avoid big literary mistakes like this.
"Compendiums" (eng) and "Compendi" (ita) are both not really correct form because they are foreign language adaptations (foreign for latin, of course!).
They are used and tolerate by people (latin is no so common language, doesn't it?), but they are not accepted by "academicians".
2° Camillus
(tenta di giustificare la scelta inopportuna)
-----------------
Actually either is considered correct in modern English usuage (at least according to the Oxford English Dictionary) so I think we can cut SJG some slack on this one.
3° Carraronan
(spiego la differenza tra termine corretto e termine errato tollerato in ambito NON accademico per il massiccio uso popolare fattone)
--------------------------------
Also "Compendi" is accepted in Italian as "compendiums" is accepted in English, but no academicians use that form because is a popular uncorrect form (a language adaptation from latin isn't tollerate by professors).
It's "tolerate" in common language because the people usually don't know latin.
4° Perfect Organism
(dice che in fondo molte parole inglesi derivano dal latino)
-----------------------------
A massive amount of the English language is borrowed from Latin and most of the rest is cobbled together from other European languages. The general rule is that once a word has been used in English long enough to be considered an English word we apply standard English rules to it's use.
Having seen what the English do to Latin grammar when given half a chance, I think that this is generally a good idea.
5° Carraronan
(la differenza tra un termine "straniero" storpiato per ignoranza ed uno ufficiale)
----------------------
And so it's in italian.
But are linguistic adaptation born by the ignorance of correct form.
Some words are not accepted in their "adaptation form" by Professionist because are Technical words: gladius, compendium, curriculum, pilum etc..etc...
Academicians know that. Latin is latin, Ancient Greek is Ancient Greek and English (or italian) is English (or italian, of course)
Tolerated, is not the same of "Correct".
6° Kromm
(Spettacolare: siamo nel 21° secolo, la cultura classica non ci serve, men che meno saper scrivere correttamente i termini tecnici...)
----------------------------
Yes. SJ Games uses English grammar, not Classical grammar. This is because all the important style guides for journalistic and academic writing now insist on it. Apologies to you scholars of Latin and Greek, but this is the 21st century, you know . . .
7° Carraronan
(capisco le vostre posizioni, ma cò non cambia ce avete usato un termine "becero", non adatto ad una pubblicazione seria)
-----------------------------------
I understand SJGames position about literary question.
But "21st century" and "ignorance" are not the same thing... often they are, but not always.
So, what is the plural for "Pilum" (roman javelin) accepted in history books and what is the plural form used in english language ?
8° Andrew Hackard
(se non sei in grado di ammettere un errore che qualcuno ha cortesemente sottolineato, sbraita e dì scemenze: questo è essere Grandi Manager)
-----------------------------
"Javelins."
And with that, I'm closing this thread. If you want to mention actual mistakes in the books (whimper) or ask if some rule that doesn't seem right is, in fact, an error, please feel free to start a new thread. If you want to argue about grammar, kindly take it to the General Chatter section.
-- Andrew, who taught Latin for three years and thinks this is a silly discussion.

FINE IGNORANCE SHOW 2004
----------------------------------------
