In breve...Mike ha composto un brano che verrà eseguito da un'orchestra il prossimo 23 agosto alla Royce Hall dell'U.C.L.A. di Los Angeles.
Il pezzo consiste in 9 movimenti musicali e durerà in totale sui 40 minuti. Alla serata parteciperà anche il Dott. Brian Cox, con cui Mike ha fatto di recente una visita al CERN di Ginevra e farà delle letture di fisica x circa 20 minuti.
Mike è da molto che ci sta lavorando...Il pezzo è stato ispirato dall'iconoclasta moderna e dall'avanguardia dei compositori come Igor Stravinsky, George Crumb, Samuel Barber, Krzysztof Penderecki e Frank Zappa. Ma l'ispirazione maggiore Mike l'ha avuta dall'amore per la scienza. Da come ho capito si è iscritto ad Harward e lo hanno accettato e inizierà a studiare composizione musicale e poi spera di passare in discipline scientifiche.

INCUBUS GUITARIST MICHAEL EINZIGER PENS ORCHESTRAL COMPOSITION TO BE PERFORMED AT ROYCE HALL ON AUGUST 23

Michael Einziger, guitarist from the Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum rock band Incubus enters a new realm with the debut of his first original orchestral composition, “End.>vacuum,” at UCLA’s famed Royce Hall on August 23.

The piece consists of nine musical movements (approximately 40 minutes total) and will be performed by a chamber orchestra led by renowned Los Angeles conductor and Einziger’s longtime collaborator Suzie Katayama.

The evening will begin with British physicist Dr. Brian Cox, who will be giving a 20-minute lecture about particle physics and the exciting scientific experiments being conducted at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research). Dr. Cox was the Scientific Consultant on the Danny Boyle film Sunshine. His commentary on the film is now available on the DVD. He also writes on scientific issues, most recent credits include the New Statesman and The Times. His ability to present science in an exciting and interesting way has made him a popular television & radio presenter, broadcaster and writer.

Einziger has been crafting “End.>vacuum” for more than a year, following surgery in March 2007 for carpel tunnel syndrome, a repetitive-strain injury to his left wrist undoubtedly due to a lifetime of playing guitar. The condition forced him to take a hiatus from the band and his instrument. It would be the longest he’d ever gone without playing, and enabled him to follow some other musical, as well as outside, interests.

“Live musical performance is what I’m most familiar with,” says Einziger, who will play various different instruments throughout the piece. “So I think it was natural for me to gravitate in that direction.”

The piece was inspired by such iconoclastic modern and avant-garde composers as Igor Stravinsky, George Crumb, Samuel Barber, Krzysztof Penderecki and Frank Zappa.

According to Einziger, “End.>vacuum” makes reference to his perception of the outer edge of human understanding, “the finite place where rational scientific knowledge stops and pure speculation ensues…The event horizon between what we know and what we don’t know is what keeps me awake at night, but also gets me out of bed every day.”

A major portion of the piece’s inspiration resides in Einziger’s love of science. He has recently participated in articles with Brown University evolutionary biologist Dr. Kenneth Miller, British physicist Dr. Brian Cox and Pulitzer Prize-winning science historian Dr. Ed Larson.

Einziger has been accepted at Harvard, where he will begin to study musical composition this fall. He hopes to study subjects such as Physics, Cosmology and Evolutionary Biology. You know, the easy stuff.

La cosa che non ho capito... L'autunno prossimo inizierà a studiare composizione musicale ad Harvard e va bene ma poi cosa c'entra con Cosmologia e Biologia? Non sono materie simili sebbene a lui interessino tutte.

Michael Einziger, il chitarrista della rock band Incubus, nominata ai Grammy e vincitrice di molti dischi di platino, entra in un nuovo universo con il debutto della sua prima composizione originale per orchestra, intitolata “End.>vacuum” ("Fine.> Vuoto") e sarà eseguita all’UCLA presso il famoso Royce Hall il 23 agosto.

Il pezzo si compone di nove movimenti musicali (circa 40 minuti in totale) e sarà eseguita da un’orchestra da camera condotta dal rinomato Suzie Katayama, che ha collaborato con Einziger per molto tempo.

La serata avrà inizio con il fisico inglese Dr Brian Cox, che terrà una lezione di 20 minuti sulla fisica delle particelle e gli emozionanti esperimenti scientifici condotti presso il Large Hadron Collider al CERN (Organizzazione europea per la ricerca nucleare). Dr Cox è stato il Consulente scientifico sul film di Danny Boyle Sunshine. Suo commento sul film è ora disponibile sul DVD. Egli scrive su questioni scientifiche, la maggior parte dei crediti recenti includono il New Statesman e The Times. A Realization in Nine Movements

for those who are interested:

simply stated, end.>vacuum is a jagged collection of orchestral music i have been writing for the past year. a horrendously turbulent, and at times serene, aural interpretation of complex patterns and geometric shapes that assemble themselves firmly into my consciousness. a 40 minute-long insomnia-induced orchestral anxiety- attack. (sounds like heaven, right?)

under normal circumstances, i play guitar in a band called incubus. but last year i was forced to stop playing for several months due to a wrist injury that required surgery, as well as a time-intensive recovery. without the option of picking up a guitar, it was during that idle time that i began to write music for the orchestra, which became like a musical game of 'tetris' for me. a huge challenge on both cerebral and intellectual levels. I don't know if it's any good, either.

rather than record this music and release it as an album, i thought it would be much more risky and fun to for the maiden voyage of 'end.>vacuum' to happen as a live, unedited performance in front of my family, friends, and fans. with all mishaps intact.

the music will be performed in nine movements, by a group of musicians i am calling 'the graviton modern ensemble'. it will be a mixture of professional philharmonic players and friends. throughout the piece, i will play a variety of different instruments (sans guitar) alongside my brother, benjamin einziger, and my good friend blake mills. suzie katayama will be conducting.

to make this event even more heavenly, the first part of the program will consist of a lecture by my friend and esteemed british physicist, dr. brian cox. he is a world-renowned scientist who acts as a science correspondent for the BBC, and is currently conducting monumental research at the large hadron collider at CERN. the large hadron collider is a particle accelerator, and is the most powerful/ complex/expensive machine ever built by humans (google it). his talk will be a discussion on particle-physics and the mind-bending potential for major discoveries at CERN in the near future.

all this could make for an amazing evening at UCLA, or it could be a train-wreck. we'll all decide that together.

a me pare che sti ragazzi stanno intraprendendo strade troppo diverse... e come dar loro torto.. a 30 anni c'è chi si sta facendo una famiglia, chi matura nuovi interessi...

ho come l'impressione che si stiano allontanando da quelli che sono gli "incubus"...

xò daltronde non si puo passare tutta la vita in tour con altri 4 uomini pensando solo a suonare... *_*

In fondo prima dei 30 anni non hanno avuto molto tempo per dedicarsi agli altri interessi o allo studio. Anche Bran aveva iniziato l'università appena finito il liceo ma ha dovuto smettere per dedicarsi a tempo pieno alla musica e ai tours. Forse ora hanno trovato il giusto equilibrio tra il lavoro e gli altri interessi ed è anche vero che ormai hanno raggiunto una stabile notorietà che gli lascia più tempo libero.
