Fairmont Hotels & Resorts Highlights Latest Environmental Partnership With Celebrity Green Power
Monday June 27, 3:05 pm ET
Joins Forces With Environmental Media Association (EMA) to Showcase Sustainability

TORONTO, June 27 /PRNewswire/ - Today, sustaining your travel habit is about more than reservations, a detailed itinerary, exotic locations and credit card access. Across a growing number of urban retreats and idyllic resorts, it's about living the good life while doing what's good for the planet. To encourage those natural instincts, Fairmont Hotel's & Resorts award- winning Green Partnership has teamed with the Los Angeles-based Environmental Media Association (EMA), a non-profit that connects Hollywood, the environmental community and consumers.

On Sunday, the new partners took time out from their respective day jobs of running luxury green hotels and pitching environmental messages to the TV and movie industry, to host a star-studded "Green Power Baby Shower" at Santa Monica's Fairmont Miramar. Attended by a multi-generational celebrity mix that included "Meet the Parents" actress Blythe Danner, plus Noah Wyle, Laura Dern and Ming-Na, all with families in tow, the event brought eco-chic to everything from safe cleaning to family travel.
Demonstrating that green truly has gone mainstream, the sponsors also covered a lot of ground. Alongside early advocates like Whole Foods Market, Silk soy, and Begley's Best cleaner from actor-advocate Ed Begley Jr., trendsetters like Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher also discovered recent global entries including the Toyota Prius, Johnson Seafarms, Ltd.'s introduction of their U.K. salmon, and The Fairmont Mayakoba, opening on Mexico's Riviera Maya this fall.

"Fairmont has always had a strong sense of place, a real pioneering history and a genuine connection to the environment and the communities around us," said Jeff Senior, the company's senior vice president of marketing & sales and one of Sunday's event panelists. "As longtime leaders in the green travel movement, our goal has been to demonstrate that style and enjoyment can co-exist happily with conservation and awareness."

"Aligning our Fairmont Green Partnership commitment with an organization like EMA is relevant to our brand heritage; more importantly it speaks to a growing passion of our guests. We're very excited about having the support of the entertainment community to encourage everyone to choose wisely, live respectfully and travel well."

Given Fairmont hotels' popularity as a backdrop for 75-years of major feature films including "Notting Hill" and "Cinderella Man," and frequent support of shoots in protected areas and UNESCO world heritage sites, the company will collaborate on EMA's efforts to green Hollywood sets. Guests who explore the Fairmont Green Partnership will be provided with information about EMA and a behind the scenes glimpse of how environmental storylines get scripted for hit shows and movies like "According to Jim," Will & Grace," "The Day After Tomorrow" and the critically acclaimed "Crash." While plans for more events and special green travel packages get underway, Fairmont will also help raise funds and awareness at the annual EMA Awards show in Los Angeles this October.

"This is a hotel company that goes above and beyond for their guests and the planet," EMA President Debbie Levin noted. "Fairmont buys green power, parks a Prius in their San Jose lobby to get guests thinking about clean air, teaches kids about bugs and baby sea turtles and lets elk roam free on their golf courses. They'll take you on a hike up a mountain to see bear tracks or to a city rooftop for their organic herb gardens."

"Like EMA, Fairmont and our other corporate partners understand that where we go, what we do and what we buy shows what we believe in and makes a difference for the planet," said Levin. "We also believe it can be simple, fashionable and fun."

The EMA partnership is one component of a broader Fairmont Green Partnership outreach and introduced this year. In January the company launched "Eco-Innovations," hotel-based green projects that "think globally and act locally," to develop environmental partnerships, learning and guest activities. Initiatives that are already earning notice include The Fairmont Orchid's "Room to Reef" campaign, Fairmont Le Manoir Richelieu's "Be My Beluga" theme, The Fairmont Chicago's organic "Shop With the Chef" package, and The Fairmont San Jose's "Clean Air Drive" to cut greenhouse gas emissions while starting talk about gridlock and gas consumption. Over a dozen more Fairmont Eco-Innovations are slated to launch by year's end.

"Since the 1880's Fairmont has encouraged and enabled our guests to explore unique surroundings and different environments," said Fairmont Environmental Affairs Manager Michelle White. "Then in 1990, we introduced the Fairmont Green Partnership to measure and reduce our environmental impacts. This partnership with EMA is another step in the right direction."

ABOUT EMA

The Environmental Media Association (EMA) mobilizes the entertainment industry in a global effort to educate people about environmental issues and inspire them into action. EMA was created in 1989, as a non-profit 501(c)3, with the simple but powerful concept that through television and film, the entire entertainment community could influence the environmental awareness of millions of people. By weaving environmental messages into entertainment programming and utilizing "celebrity" for positive role modeling, EMA continues to have a profound effect on how the public receives environmental information. www.ema-online.org

Large-scale protests planned as G8 leaders prepare to meet in Scotland
By SHELLEY EMLING
Cox News Service
Monday, June 27, 2005

LONDON – In a sign that the popularity of white anti-poverty wristbands has reached its zenith, they have been banned in many primary schools across Britain because so many children were squabbling over them.

Supermodel Claudia Schiffer sports one. So do members of the band Coldplay. Even British Prime Minister Tony Blair has been photographed wearing a white wristband.

But the wristbands are just a small sign of the protest tornado set to churn across Britain and towards Scotland in the run-up to the Group of 8 summit of the world's industrialized nations next month.

Indeed, the Make Poverty History coalition – the group behind the white wristbands – is planning a whole host of protest events.

Irish rock star-turned-activist Bob Geldof has announced a series of July 2 concerts around the world known as Live8. After the concerts he wants people to head for Edinburgh, Scotland in time for an anti-poverty "party" four days later which he is billing as "The Long Walk To Justice."

The protest party is designed to coincide with the start of the G8 summit in Gleneagles, just north of Edinburgh, which takes place from July 6th to 8th.

If the ubiquitous white wristbands are any indication, the heads of the world's richest nations will be hard-pressed not to notice what's bound to be a massive antipoverty drive.

When Geldof, the former Boomtown Rats singer, organized the groundbreaking Live Aid concert series in 1985 to raise money for those

starving in Ethiopia, global communication wasn't as advanced as it is today.

Now there are more groups working together under the Make Poverty History umbrella, and they have put together a potent advertising campaign.

Television ads that have been airing in Europe and North America show a parade of somber-looking celebrities including Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Noah Wyle, Sean "Puffy" Combs, and Kate Moss snapping their fingers every three seconds, signifying the frequency that a child dies somewhere in the world due to poverty.
A French version stars actress Juliette Binoche while a German version stars Schiffer. And the amount of attention being drawn to the free Live8 concerts — designed to raise awareness and not money — is no small potatoes thanks to an impressive celebrity lineup.

At the kickoff concert in London's Hyde Park, for example, Pink Floyd will perform together for the first time in 24 years alongside stars such as Sting, Madonna, Elton John, and Paul McCartney.

In Philadelphia, Will Smith will host a concert heavy on hip-hop that will include Destiny's Child and Jay-Z.

The concerts will be streamed live on the Internet by America Online at www.AOLmusic.com.

The Make Poverty History campaign hopes that the global focus will draw at least 100,000 — and possibly up to 250,000 — poverty protesters to Scotland ahead of the G8 summit.

"We expect the G8 leaders to recognize that the protesters coming out next month are only the tip of the iceberg of public opinion," said Nik Kafka, a spokesman for the Make Poverty History group. "There are more than 3.5 million people in the UK alone who are supporting this campaign by wearing the white wristband."

But what exactly is the campaign hoping to accomplish?

Already, G8 finance ministers have agreed to cancel at least $40 billion in debt belonging to 18 poor countries, 14 in Africa and four in Latin America. And Blair, the G8 summit's host, has promised to put Africa at the top of the meeting's agenda.

But protesters insist that G8 countries — including the United States — can do much more.

In the United States, Make Poverty History's cousin — the ONE Campaign — is pushing the Bush administration to increase its spending on AIDS and poverty to 1 percent of the federal budget — or by an additional $25 billion.

Elsewhere, protesters are urging that protectionist trade policies be loosened, that carbon emissions be cut and that annual development aid be doubled to at least $100 billion by 2015.

"The G8 have made grand statements on Africa for 10 years now," said Steve Tibbett, head of policy at ActionAid UK, a charity that's part of Make Poverty History. "In that time they have cancelled only a fraction of poor countries' debts and have given less and lower quality aid.

"It is time for the G8 to show some remorse and take positive action," he said.

But the public seems to harbor little hope that the protests will have any impact.

A recent survey of roughly 2,000 people across Britain, conducted by Sky News television and the national polling firm of YouGov, found that only 6 percent of Britons believed the protests in Scotland would actually help to fight poverty.

Nearly 75 percent of people questioned believe African governments had the biggest influence on the continent's economy and standard of living.

At the same time, many economists have argued that the only way out of poverty for poor nations is to help them become less reliant on western aid.

But Jan Ayers, who is organizing a bus to carry protesters from the Welsh border to Scotland, said aid does indeed help and that average people can help get the message out.

"I've just sold out one coach and now it seems I might need to organize a second," Ayers said. "This shows how committed people are. We can indeed demand trade justice, debt cancellation and better aid for the poorest countries."

Meanwhile, not all protesters will be focused strictly on poverty and trade. Thousands of anti-nuclear activists are expected to descend on Faslane naval base in Scotland, home to Britain's Trident nuclear submarines, on July 4th — just two days before the start of the G8 summit.

"The G8 will never make poverty history unless they also make war history," said Joss Garman, a spokesman for the anti-nuclear group Trident Ploughshares. "Militarism is one of the greatest causes of poverty and environmental destruction and is the means by which western governments enforce their destructive economic policies."

John Carter Project
After a month of intense work, the John Carter Project is finished.
What is the John Carter project?
It’s a PowerPoint that reviews the 11 years of Carter at ER with an extra musical surprise.

I strongly recommend this PowerPoint to every fan of ER.
The file is heavy, it wasn’t easy to compile 11 seasons, but every MB is worthwhile. You won’t regret.

The file is available here:

www.megaupload.com/?d=18F52NHQ

It’s also available by the bittorrent system:

torrentmatrix.com/torrents-details.php?id=18415&hit=1

Before you watch it, a few things:
1- Close all the applications. As it’s a big file we don’t want to freeze the computer.
2- Put the sound volume at your favorite level.
3- Turn off the lights.
4- Do not interrupt the presentation with clicks or mouse movements because you will disturb the music. Later you’ll have time to watch it several times at your rhythm.

That’s all. Enjoy it! [5amo]

My pleasure Raffy. The link works, the problem is that the server is too busy. Perhaps many people is trying to get the file.
It's difficult to find a free place to host 150 MB. I tried yousendit, but it allowed very few downloads.
I hope the server solves the problem soon.

From ER forum

In case you guys were wondering, Noah is among the top 10 Male Celebrities for 2005 based on his Q scores. Others on the list include Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Ray Romano, Denzel Washington and Mel Gibson. Unfortunately, I'm unable to copy and paste but you can take my word for it.

Though some may struggle to define the undefinable, at Marketing Evaluations/TvQ Inc., workers pin a number on personal magnetism.

Polling about 1,800 people twice each year, they slap a value on performers' demographic appeal, also known as their "Q" rating.

As you might expect, actors with the highest Q's combine a mainstream likability with ubiquity and a significant lack of controversy; think Robin Williams, Bill Cosby, Michael J. Fox, James Earl Jones, Noah Wyle and Whoopi Goldberg.

At this level, talent is a given. But the high-Q crowd seems to enjoy a popularity separate from the fortunes or quality of any particular project
.
