CHILLY TEE - GET OFF MINE - MCA - 1993 - $2
RAPREVIEWS REVIEW
Figlio che co-fondatore del NIKE. Mi sa che daddy avra' pagato qualche dollaretta per fa' uscire questo album. Cio' nonostante non e' bruttissimo.

DIVINE STYLER - WORD POWER - CBS/EPIC - 1989 - $2
Word Power is the debut album by Divine Styler, released in 1989 on Epic Records. On this album, Divine raps about been proud of hertitage (hightlighted on It's a Black Thing), and features Bilal Bashir (who made later instrumentals for the likes of Dr. Dre, Ice Cube and Everlast), who later re-released this album in instrumental form, in 2005. The album is best known for the songs 'Ain't Sayin Nothin' which featured a sample scratch noise similar to the sound used in House Of Pain's song, Jump Around and Cypress Hill's Insane In The Brain, and 'Freestyler', which features samples of James Brown.

DYNAMETRIX - A MEASURE OF FORCE - KOLD SWEAT - 1994 - $2

GODFATHER DON - HAZARDOUS - CNR - 1991 - $2
Ultra fans know Keith was already a legend by then, but not everyone knows that Don had released a self-produced album in 1991 on Select Records. I suspect that the back cover of the album - a picture of Don walking down the street carrying a guitar case, probably conjured up a lot of associations with Me Phi Me, or Justin Warfield, and didn't really clue people into the fact the album was actually jam packed with real hip hop. "Hazardous," the title track for the album, is my favorite song on there - Don shows off the lyrical versatility that was the center piece of the album. And the beat is dope. The album wasn't brilliant - a lot of hooks that don't quite work, and sometimes the changes of style come off as gimmicky. But it's no accident that Don was able to come back in the 90's and develop a strong fan base. The man had skills - as he displays all over this song. Back when this album dropped, I had a section of my wall devoted to the ugliest promo posters I could find. "The Hazardous" poster would have been the centerpiece had it not been for my poster of Kid N' Play etched into Mount Rushmore. Fortunately, the album was better than the poster. This definitely belongs in the "overlooked" category.

JUVENILE COMMITTEE - FREE US COLORED KIDS - GRAND JURY - 1993 - $2
Jay-Bo, Speedy, Rick-Rock, and Smurfie B. grew up in the same South Central L.A. housing project, and began to get together to rap about the problems young blacks face. A local producer noticed, and brought the group to his Grand Jury Records (a division of Reprise). The result, 1993's Free Us Colored Kids, was produced with help from Hank Shocklee, Daddy-O, DJ Quick, and Dr. Dre

MAESTRO FRESH WES - SYMPHONY IN EFFECT - LMR RECs - 1989 - $2

MR MYSTIC - WAIT TIL THEY GET A LOAD OF ME - THG MUSIC - 1993 - $2

POPPA BEAR KOOL BREEZE & BABY WISE - NOW YA KNOW - THG MUSIC - 1993 - $2

PUBLIC ENEMY - YO! BUM RUSH THE SHOW - DEF JAM - 1987 - $2

SHA-KEY - A HEAD NADDA's JOURNET TO ADIDI SKIZM - IMAGO - 1994 - $2

SLICK RICK - BEHIND BARS - DEF JAM - 1994 - $2
Within hip-hop, Slick Rick is arguably the most acclaimed MC of them all. Snoop Doggy Dogg, for one, owes a huge debt to his detached, effortless delivery on the microphone. At his best, Slick Rick was always coolness personified. The London-born artist's troubles, however, have been well-documented. They are further addressed by the man himself on the title track to this recording, completed during a work release program with the help of veteran hip-hop producer Prince Paul (Rick was in jail for the 1990 shooting of an innocent bystander while attempting to chase down a bodyguard). Before Ol' Dirty Bastard cornered the market, Slick Rick was rap's bad boy-in-chief. On this uneven record, he pays witness to the events that shaped him, rather than detailing his current incarceration. Regardless, there are times when the listener might wish for a more reflective and less violently female-baiting narrator; absolution and regret aren't particularly high on his agenda when he proclaims "bitches ain't no good.

THE NEW STYLE - INDEPENDENT LEADERS - MCA - 1989 - $2
Ehsi....il debutto ufficiale dei NAUGHTY BY NATURE, solo con un nome, e look, diverso.
